What's funnier is that she actually says she was "salty" when you bring it up later. I was watching GoldGlove on Twitch playing it after I finished and he was like, "Holy shit, Brooke is a Twitch chat member." Busted up laughing.

This is my thinking as well. Max did not invent a time machine or read an ancient scroll or whatever and impose herself on the space time continuum.

Something gave her those powers specifically to save Chloe. So the idea that same something wants Chloe to die is strange given all it needed to see Chloe dead was not give her those powers in the first place.

Haha, damn, I got this kind of bug with Brooke, too.

I also got another during a tense moment: During the cutscene where Max opens up the door to the Dark Room and she enters with Chloe, the sound queue "You locked it, dumbass!" went off for whatever reason while they were talking.

1. Doe was sitting on top of the spot where you find Rachel (well, and also at the lighthouse scenes). Said doe can't be captured on film, and is immune to your time powaz. So probably Rachel or a helpful time ghost thing.
2. I time ninja'd his keys, but I'd assume you can look through your old files to find the correct code (you actually keep all the documents you collect in previous episodes, so have fun scrolling).
3. Just don't go looking for a fight (and at the same time, don't give away the fact that you were in his RV). [not here for a fight, sorry, you scared me (if you tried to shoot him), animal rescue, and I want to say Rachael's photo.
4. Probably if you didn't antagonize Victoria with the paint fiasco, fuck up her room, or (not sure about this) get Mr. Jefferson in trouble, she'd be more inclined to befriend you.

Generally in time travel stories, the person with the ability to time travel has to come to terms and accept that they can't change the past and the moral they learn is that they have to be able to accept things as they've happened and make the best of the present. I don't know why she got the powers in the fiction, I'm just guessing why she has them ultimately for the story. I'm sure they can come up with a reasonable in story answer for she has the power.

I feel like that's generally the case in which the protagonist is the one who initiates their time travel power somehow, but not when it's given to them for seemingly a purpose. Max never wanted time travel powers, she just got them. Narratively it doesn't make sense if she was never supposed to use them in the first place.

Additionally, Max's initial premonition about the vortex descending on Arcadia Bay occurred before she got her powers (presumably) and with a very specific date for the "end" and her time travel hasn't seemed to really influence that at all.

However, generally in time travel fiction, that travel is sought as a conscious choice by the traveller and the underlying point is that humans ought not to meddle much as they'd like to. But you can't really accuse Max of that since she had it thrust upon her.

If the moral of the story ends up being you shouldn't have done that thing you wouldn't have been able to do anyway, that's kind of a messy point to get to in order to arrive at the final destination situation.

That's possible but then the story is really a battle between two unseen supernatural forces or factions which I don't think is particularly narratively fulfilling. Still possible I'll admit a Loki like figure is fucking with her for sport, or a benevolent something or other that should know better is to blame.

Who said she got her powers in the beginning of the game? And what if it wasn't a premonition, since that doesn't seem to be how her powers work from what we've seen so far? What's more likely is that it already and actually happened, and she simply returned (via time travel) to Jefferson's classroom, moments before her plot-mandatory selfie was taken, and the express goal of heading this far back was to undo the damage she caused and she, by as of yet some unknown plot device, simply forgot.
 
Really enjoyed episode 4.
-I was surprised that the scene with Chloe wanting Max to end her life happened so early, went in expecting that to be towards the tail end of the episode but with how things went down, it worked as a hard-hitting opening.
-Warren redeemed himself smacking the shit out of Nathan and I let him.
-Things got really dark real fast this time around once you find the secret lair, wasn't expecting this game to go to some of the places it did.
-Being able to reach a non-violent solution with Frank was pretty cool. Also a nice bit of reactivity from David early on if you stuck up for him previously.
-That ending - damn you Jefferson!
-Good length, I was expecting it to end when you find the body but it kept on going for a while longer.

Negatives:
Most buggy episode so far, the CTRL rewind is broken and I also hit a black screen after rewinding back, forward then back again during the scene with Frank, requiring me to load from the checkpoint.

Definitely the most enjoyable episode so far but I really hope that rewind bug gets fixed soon, I had to replay entire scenes because of it.

That explanation just begs a lot more questions without really answering the fundamental one of how and why Max ever received her powers.

I think your interpretation of this game is as very specifically a time travel story whereas I'm seeing it as a teen drama murder mystery where time-travel is used as a narrative conceit rather as the driving force of the story.

That's my reading as well. The game definitely has a sense of time travel fiction, but I'd be surprised if it became all Slaughterhouse Five at the end.
 
if the only way to stop the storm is for Max to die in/disappear from the current timeline, I think it would be a pretty heartwarming ending if her consciousness gets transported to the past when she and Chloe were just kids and she gets to fix her mistakes, doesn't leave Arcadia Bay and becomes friends with Rachel

I'm not really working off time travel tropes, and more off what I've seen in-game so far. I mean, I think it's less of an asspull than the idea that she suddenly got her powers in the bathroom. Still doesn't explain how or why, but I don't think it's too wise to limit yourself with regards to *when*. Also, Chloe seems fated to die in almost every episode until you use your powers to save her. At the same time, the series of events leading to the storm just escalates. Whatever Max is doing, it's not helping, and heck, even the episode names seem to work off this idea.

No reason it can't be a time travel fiction teen murder mystery.

...I can be totally wrong since Dontnod loves dem red herrings.

but the first time i hit L1 during Episode 4, it just went ALL the way back to before my first decision of the section.

i couldn't stop it. it went all the way to the point edges of the screen being redshifted and bloodshot, whatever that effect is.


emergent story telling through gameplay or glitch?
 
I think Episode 3 and 4 establish that Max can save a person permanently (William) without it being undone by destiny, it's just that there is a cost (in that case Chloe).

Which is why I fear that Max is more likely to die by the series end than Chloe. Especially given all the repeated "you always save me" stuff Chloe feeds you over the course of the game.

Of course, the game may also have multiple endings.

I honestly feel like it would cheapen it to have Max have to die in the end to fix everything, since that would make it pretty much a Butterfly Effect/Donnie Darko knockoff.

But I seriously think of the two it's gonna be Chloe that has to bite it. It seems like fate will not be denied on this.
 
I'm not 100% either of them will go, but by killing either you basically either trap yourself in Donnie Darko, that pretty awful Time Machine remake, Final Destination, the darker cut of the Butterfly Effect or Looper.

Feels almost like time travel stories where there's a mostly positive ending is the exception, Back to the Future being the only one that immediately jumps to mind.

Chloe may well die ultimately but I have a feeling it will not be at the end of Episode 4.

But who knows. As another poster said Dontnod has been pretty good at tricking most of us so far, and have at least referenced most of these movies so I'm really interested to see what they do for Episode 5.

He's the main character's adult crush in a murder mystery, that automatically makes him jump to the top of the list of suspects.

I remember watching a Spanish horror film from a while back called "Thesis" that had a very similar character to Jefferson, so I suspected him almost immediately.

It's not really an "asspull", it just hasn't been explained yet. And it seems pretty obvious why she got her powers at that very specific moment, because that's when Chloe was going to die (for the first time).

Maybe there is some cosmic conspiracy against Chloe, but I see the time traveling powers Max was given as a way to defy that outcome as well as help solve the mysteries surrounding Arcadia Bay and it's (perhaps) oncoming doom.

It probably has something to do with the doe and the totem(s)? When you talk to the teacher that is sitting next to that creepy custodian she says she doesn't know who put it there and that arcadia was surrounded by some sort of energy or something. Paraphrasing since I don't really remember exactly what she said.
 
Apparently the duct tape in the dark room is similar/the same as the one found in Mr. Jefferson's room for the can-bomb, too.

Anyone invite edit: Daniel to the vortex party and see what happens? I decided against it, for no real reason other than it didn't seem his scene.
 
So do you think David is involved with this whole situation, I think back and remember the one gun missing from David's collection and then what happened to Chloe, I don't think he is personally but who knows. I'm predicting
David will be the one to save Max from the Dark Room, who's to say he would stop following people even after he got kicked out.

Yo I let Brooke swoop in and get Warren off my hands, killed two birds with one stone, got rid of Warren's advances, sorta, and got Brooke some Warren love, I even wrote CuTe on Warren's slate, then thought about it and rewound and took it off just so I don't step on Brooke's toes because she seemed real thirsty. Plus they seemed really happy together in the alternate Maxine reality.

I feel validated I threw Warren a pity date after he kicked the shit out of Nathan and probably saved us all with his half a beer drunk selfie request.
 
I shot him down as well. Brooke seems really happy to be around Warren, especially when we were in the middle of a convo and she kept mentioning warren during my dialogue.

See I never payed attention to what he says in the class. I got suspicious when he got that call in front of Max. Finally putting it together when I saw the note on the computer. Also, the dark room bits room the Alternate world helped too.
