I don't see Microsoft actually going through with that unless they made the unlocking process prevent you from ever going on Xbox Live again with that system. Be interesting to see though.

I think what they need to do is remove the System Link ping detection from 360 games in the final dash update. If Live goes down at least you can still use XlinkKai.

As for full kernel access, no way. Allowing any XEX to run would lead to cheaters galore over Live, a bunch of noobs who have no idea how any of this works, and just easier piracy. Oh, and the fact I am certain some asshole would release a malicious XEX that zeroes out your flash and effectively bricks your console. In other words - no way in hell.

EDIT: Yes, last update, remove region lock too. Make the dash allow any XEX even if the region mismatches. Those two patches don't harm anything and make things better. They already added the USB update so who knows at this point,

So what? The premise is that Live for 360 has been shut down, and MS has stopped supporting the console.

I really don't get this whole Phil Spencer is saving Xbox thing.

I haven't seen him demonstrate that.

The fans desperately want to believe, and they need someone to project their hopes onto. And who else is there? From what I've seen, Spencer is just very good at corporate-speak, at least to fool lots of people. There is something deeply dishonest about him.

No one can "save" the Xbox Brand.

Microsofts vision of having their box in everyone's room isn't going to happen.

Let's face it the Xbox was created with that long term goal in mind, the original Xbox one vision was trying to blur the line between traditional game console and all in one media centre, they are now trying to blur the line between PC and Xbox.

Their long term goal is just to have Microsoft boxes in everyone's home.

The funniest thing is when some people think the Xbox one will do what the PS3 did in terms of making up ground last gen. It won't, there's no ifs buts and maybes. The Xbox brand is weak in certain regions and they'll never make the numbers in those places.

On a more positive note I do think Microsoft had some very good ideas for the Xbox one but the online community shot them down too quickly in my opinion.

Like?

Unlock? Can someone elaborate?

Run unsigned code I would imagine. I've had many 360s that I used for offline modding and homebrew and afaik it's not possible to do without a hardware modification unless MS will release their own tutorial on it or can do it themselves.

@XboxP3 ransom question, when the xbox360 reaches its end of life and the support ends with it, will Microsoft "unlock" the system?.

I mean it's just a blanket - 'We'll get back to you about that' statement. What do you expect him to say? Here's everything we plan to do on a plate for you right here right now simply because you asked on twitter?

All I really want is my XBLA collection to be made available on the XB1 now with the backwards compatibility push.

After the Don Mattrick / Penello / Yusuf / Hryb PR debacle, MS realized they need a PR savior. Phil "Gaming-related T-Shirt" Spencer became that man for them :p
And some hardcore fans are pushing him as the "savior" of the brand. Did you notice how you don't hear anything at all from Penello / Yusuf since then? Smart idea imho.

"Fools lots of people"

"Deeply dishonest"

Lol, good one.

It seems pretty clear they're giving the fans what they want which is investment in "core" games and there are plenty of them. Other good moves like backwards compatibility help plus the executives and studios management are a lot more active in talking to and listening to what fans actually want them to do.

Theres nothing to "desperately" believe in, the plan seems pretty clear and a lot of people are very happy with that.

Probably the Xbox part of his title

They've announced a lot of exciting new games, reversed the stupid decisions they made at the beginning, have a good communication with fans. Now presumably you're talking about a sales factor well, it will take them longer to solve that based on where they started but Peter Moore seems to think he/they are saving the brand.

You must not have been paying much attention in 2013 if you don't think they are working towards that, in my opinion.

What is dishonest about him? Seems to me that it's the media that is jumping the gun every time he says something.

Nah, I don't think so. His 'savior' status is much ado about nothing, but I think he's a pretty genuine guy in his intentions/drive. He gives a lot of "that would be cool" non-answers though.

Now Reggie...

Barring Live being shutdown, allowing full kernel access would still allow piracy very easily - even if the console if discontinued, I don't think Microsoft would really support it. Remember all the third parties too. Not to mention, with BC on Xbone, it's unlikely 360 online will even go down for quite some time as those games still rely on the 360 ecosystem.

Not only media, but a lot of forum users have to automatically try to discredit every word Spencer says. It's like a trigger in they hands and keyboards.

Which is funny and sad to see at the same time.

If you're going to discount the premise, I don't see the point?

Like the way he answers questions with empty words that sound nice pretty much every time.

Most of the time in the real world you cant have everything you want so Phil says he likes the sound of it or that he would like to do it. How the fuck else do you say those things without promising them? Fucking people like to make mountains out of mole Hills.

What promises has he made?
None. That was kind of my point, you know?

You're right, actually. In this case, the fault lies with the OP choosing such a click-bait title. I guess my general distrust in the man is a reaction to the many people who, like OP, post threads like this whenever he says something non-committal about an interesting subject.

EDIT: NVM, forgot about the whole "there is no parity-clause" thing. My mistrust is fairly well-founded after all.

Lol, did you post this angrily from your PS4 browser? Your post history gives a picture of how much you love Xbox.

I don't dislike the guy per se, but I do find the fan reception to him a bit weird. The way I see it, he came into post and made a bunch of incredibly obvious changes to the Xbone and all of a sudden everyone considers him the saviour of Xbox because he got rid of Kinect and dropped the price.

Not forgetting of course that he was in charge of their development studios from 2009-2014, which was a pretty shitty period for first party development compared to anything which came before.

That being said, some of the Xbone stuff like BC, streaming to PC and the value in products like Rare Replay and MCC is commendable. When they're on the back foot and struggling to remain relevant they've made some good decisions.

IF he really is such a genuine guy then how about erasing the Indie parity clause?

Oh yeah how about that poor phantom dust dev?

Oh and again what about TR?

Oh and ..... want me to continue?

He's just some really good PR guy that some fans desperately push into becoming their saviour.

Dont be stupid and naive.

No, but some people like to spread shit over him just for being a nice guy that usually responds to users on twitter, despite being typical PR responses.

Was not shitting on him though was I, just noted that he is very politically correct and tactical in his use of words....both on twitter and interviews is my impression of the guy. Probably because he works for such a large corporation.

It would just be nice if sometimes high ups in all game companies just spoke normally and cut out those well trodden PR speak.

Reggie is also guilty of this, more so imo.

They all do it....somehow Shu seems to manage to get away with it more often ....reminds me of Boris Johnson in a way.......

Anyway, he did not really answer the question. Phi comes across much better when he is not doing the PR thing.
