Phil Spencer talks about unlocking the Xbox 360

The guy gives vague approving responses to 100 game and feature requests a day. At some point one of them is bound to happen. At this point he's probably made a response for pretty much every Xbox IP and feature request.

Its a shame this isn't true, given he doesn't respond to 100 tweets a day :(

omg the hate is real. Phil is a nice guy.

This is the exact moment when he shut up a lot of mouths:

So he's supposed to leak company plans and info every time someone asks him anything on twitter? Dishonesty! Fools! Pr speak!

At least he responds a lot. He's the head of a large business unit in one of the biggest companies on earth. Give me a break.

This thread title led me to believe there would be an actual discussion about this :/

There's always people posting about how "it's fucking nothing" when it comes to Spencer threads, and they aren't necessarily wrong, but that blame tends to be steered towards Spencer, when I feel like sometimes that's more on us for making threads about nothing. It's not as if Spencer made this thread (or that tweet) with the intention of making some epic announcement.

That's not to say he's above criticism (hello Tomb Raider), but situations like this don't seem to really warrant it?

That's all I got. Carry on!

I have a hard time believing that anyone hating on Phil Spencer actually uses an xbox on a weekly basis.

Neogaf, you're weird as fuck sometimes.

Idk man, I use mine all the time and I still don't think that his noncommittal twitter posts have enough substance to warrant much discussion most of the time.

I think the dude is a great step above the other talking heads MS has had in the last few years, though. I've got no beef with Spencer.

I really don't get this whole Phil Spencer is saving Xbox thing.

I haven't seen him demonstrate that.

The only way that's true is that you didn't pay attention to where Xbox came from in the later years of the 360 and you somehow slept through all of 2013 starting with the Xbox One reveal.

How could you miss transitions like going from Mattrick's TV TV TV and Kinect Xbox to Spencer removing Kinect as one of his first orders of business, shutting down Xbox Entertainment Studios, and focusing all of his conferences on games?

If that went over your head then it's not surprising that you also missed how the Mattrick era focused growth on pillar franchises (Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable) and third-party deals, with all other development going towards multimedia functionality and Kinect. He's the reason new core IP development dried up on the 360 from 2009 onwards. Spencer, on the other hand, has a variety of games released and in development.

Never mind that Mattrick wasn't even generally liked among Xbox fans, but Phil has earned a following and fans genuinely look forward to what he has to say.

No I think some people legitimately think him going "We will think about this" is borderline confirmation of the thing in question happening. If you go to previous Phil Spencer tweet threads whenever people go "this is vague, we can't make anything of this" there are people who respond in some way similar to "I'll choose to believe this"

When they're not working on something or it's not up for consideration he's been forward about it. You can't blame fans for letting their imagination run wild, that's something that happens for Sony, MS, Nintendo, Valve, etc.

No one can "save" the Xbox Brand.

Microsofts vision of having their box in everyone's room isn't going to happen.

Let's face it the Xbox was created with that long term goal in mind, the original Xbox one vision was trying to blur the line between traditional game console and all in one media centre, they are now trying to blur the line between PC and Xbox.

Their long term goal is just to have Microsoft boxes in everyone's home.

The funniest thing is when some people think the Xbox one will do what the PS3 did in terms of making up ground last gen. It won't, there's no ifs buts and maybes. The Xbox brand is weak in certain regions and they'll never make the numbers in those places.

On a more positive note I do think Microsoft had some very good ideas for the Xbox one but the online community shot them down too quickly in my opinion.

Sony had this same vision from day one, more so than the original Xbox when the 4 fathers wanted to keep DVD playback serperate from gaming, whereas Sony sold the PS2 and PS3 as trojan horses for DVD and Blu-ray respectively.

It's as much hyperbole as calling him "deeply dishonest", "PR person", someone who uses a lot of "empty words" and saying that every Phil Spencer response is "pretty much nothing" and that he uses "corporate speak to fool lots of people".

...and that's just from this thread.

Take out dishonest and it is spot on. He is a PR person, he does use a lot of empty words and most of his fan advertised responses equate to "cool, we'd love to do it".

Love my Xbox and I can agree with this. Then again, I don't feel the need to to defend corporate members for the video game system I own. If I am out of work, Phil (or Shu) isn't coming to my house to give me free games or help me through the hard times. Fandom can be a silly thing at times.

Lmao, pretty much.

That said, that tweet really didn't warrant a thread imho.

Folks, we really need to start working on not using any bit of news that we come across to pivot to some canned rhetoric we have stowed away for anything we deem vaguely related to something we have an opinion on. First of all, there's nothing really to discuss here. This isn't news. Spencer was asked a question and he didn't really have an answer ready for it, so he offered something completely non-committal. That's to be expected. There is absolutely nothing about this that merits a cynical response.

So, we've established that this isn't really news. The response probably then becomes "well, what do you want us to talk about then Steve if this is a non-news thread?" My suggestion? Just let it die. I feel bad for anyone who wants to talk about this topic in earnest, but for everyone else it's just an excuse to launch into criticism of Spencer as a hollow PR mouthpiece. Sometimes, that can be appropriate. This is not one of those cases.
