Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

Is the plexiglass like 1/32 thick? As in very thin.

it's 1/31, actually. I know because I cut a small portion of it off and measured its depth with my precision ruler that I keep near my arcade sticks :D

srsly, it's somewhere between 1/32 and 1/16 I guess :)

Can someone recommend me a Stick for USF4 on PS4? Just downloaded the game last night and the controller is wrecking my hands.

Not looking for a crazy expensive stick. Something decent that does the job, preferably with 8 face buttons.

A dollar figure would be easier to work with but here you go:

Bad timing, pal. Hori has had small, light sticks for $60 that are about 80% as good as the best sticks out there for years, but so far, they are still only available for PS3, not PS4. Very odd!

The cheapest after that are Hori's HRAP for $150, which have excellent sticks/buttons/ergonomics but are not heavy enough to be lap-stable. I recommend them for places where they will be velcroed or screwed on (they have both options available!)

Next come the madcatz TE at $200. They're great (except the TE2 has some painful bezel and loose plexi issues).

Then finally the Hori Viewlix at $299. Obviously, it's awesome, but it's not very portable because of the size.

They are ALL 8-face buttons, so that's no issue, but there is just no way of buying a cheap, quality stick nowadays. Both Hori and Madcatz apparently colluded to eliminate their low-cost options entirely and play exclusively in the $150-$300 range.

Pretty ludicrous prices if you ask me, but there ya have it. You're sort of fucked :(

Your cheapest valid option, if you already have a PS3/360 stick, is to buy a titan one adapter for $80 and play using that, but it's an inconvenience to need an adapter.

I always hear about how the Cronus adapter is banned at tournaments, but what about the Titan One? Is there just a blanket ban on similar devices?

So, since it has become clear I'll never get around to building my arcade cabinet I've been eyeing PC arcade sticks instead.

This in particular:

I know qanba builds nice sticks and this one is cheap-ish (90$) AND dual.

What says you GAF ? Good ?

Getting excited for SF5, thinking about buying a stick and getting into Ultra on PC in the meantime.

I'm in the UK and any Mad Catz sticks don't seem readily available. Options I'm looking at are the Hori Kai or this Venom Arcade Stick. I'd upgrade the Venom with Sanwa buttons straight away. Also noticed this Torii Stick on an arcade part site, is this worth the extra money?

I don't have the Torii myself but I did watch a video talking about it just a few hours ago. Here's the link: https://youtu.be/2373NjJQ0_s

It might help inform your decision a bit more at least.

Thanks, that was useful. Seems like a complete package, not sure if it's overkill for my first stick.

I understand PS3 sticks aren't officially supported on a lot of PS4 games, but am I right in thinking they should still work for SFV on PS4?

What's the Hori stick? I've probably already looked at them and I think I've settled on just modding my iCade Core, but I'm curious.

No, bad. Cheaper than a normal stick and double the parts is never a good sign.

If I was you, I'd buy two separate sticks (or the PCBs, wiring, and buttons) and mod them into a desk.

They haven't confirmed that PS3 sticks will work with SFV yet, at least as far as I know. They do work with Ultra SFIV on ps4 now. I definitely wouldn't buy a super expensive stick for SFV without it being one that works for PS4 out ofnthe box. Or just sit tight until they confirm what kind of support it'll have.

Not sure if its the same he's talking about but there is a Hori Mini 3 that I got for about $30 over a year ago when I was planning to get into the genre and gave up real quick lol. It's tiny and the buttons are weak but the stick seems decent enough. Looks like they don't make them anymore though so not likely to get a good deal on one. I'm actually gonna try to stick with it this time and am going to use the Mini until I get a real stick but I'm waiting for some more PS4 ones to be announced/released before deciding what to get.

Yeah that's a fair point. I've ordered the Hori one. I'll think about upgrading the buttons after playing with it a bit, it looks easy enough

My HORI is coming in tomorrow guys, I haven't played any fighter since last Saturday with sfv

Does the Hori work on PC? I was thinking of getting a TE2 to replace the busted Cerberus modded SE I have for PC, but if the Plexiglass and stuff slides on the TE2... I'm thinking of getting the Hori instead. But I dunno if it works on PC with no issues, I know MadCatz apparently has PC drivers so that's an edge there. But for $150 less than the TE2, I'd get the Hori Arcade for PS3/4 if it doubles on PC.

It does.

I bought this thing. Hori RAP V Hayabusa. I've used Hori products in the past and heard the RAP line was pretty good, so why not.

My first arcade stick. EVO HERE I COME.

Can you replace the art on the Hori easily? I dunno if I want to keep that black default.

Can get a Plexi panel from Art's Hobbies easy enough. Only possible concern is that you have to peel off the original art according to videos I've seen.

Obviously won't matter once your beautiful replacement art is all in there and under the plexi, but worth noting nonetheless.

I haven't had a chance to replace the art on mine yet, but the art on the MadCatz TE was just a plastic sheet with some weak adhesive. Came right off without a hitch, I'm hoping this is the same...

Have you guys seen this kickstarter? It's interesting to say the least. Cautiously optimistic because i've never heard of this guy.
140,000? Seems a bit over the top. I read his explanation and all, but still.
Also at 200 dollars for a stick he's at the high end of the current retail market, I thought 200 was a lot for a TE2 which has a proven track record, seems a bit steep for a jumping off point when your trying to sell/Market a new product.

Edit: Also the way he talks about how hard it is to replace buttons in a fight stick, makes me think he knows nothing about the current fight stick market. The TE2 and razer are incredibly easy to swap buttons. Neither require tools, and I'm sure there are others on the market as well.

Just bought my first stick ever, a mad catz TE2 off of amazon, it was 2% off!(what a deal).

Is there anything worth upgrading on the stick and is there any way to make the stick compatible with xbox one? I heard the te2 sticks for xbox one cannot cross over to ps platform, but since te2 for ps came out later you can?

Also is there a good website that has custom art that you can print out to replace the artwork on the stick?

Can someone recommend me a good, not expensive 360 stick that allows easy part swapping? Ideally Astro City layout but Viewlix is fine.

How easy do you want? The MCZ Soul Calibur & Tekken Tag 2 sticks have Astro layouts and you only need an allen wrench to open them up. Not sure how expensive they are now.

Nabbed a copy of USF4 for PS4 and now I'm thinking of finally buying an arcade stick. I was eyeing up the MadCatz Arcade FightStick TE2 or the HORI Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai. Anyone have any input on one or the other?

Hori has a touchpad, which is necessary for quick button assignment at the character select screen and trials. TE2 is made with customization in mind, but the Hori isn't exactly difficult.

Kai is the cheaper option and has a touchpad. Hayabusa is maybe kind of slightly looser than a JLF, but IMO it's more comfortable and smooth and gets the tightness Just Right (tm) when you add a 2lb JLF spring. Kuro buttons are a matter of opinion, but if you're not used to using a stick at all and thus have no preference, you won't know what to complain about or not complain about with them.

TE2 is a good choice as it works as well, but the lack of touchpad as a feature is a killer for me, as well as it costing $50 more. The spacing of the stick to the buttons is closer than the Kai as it's closer to the Vewlix layout than the Kai is (the Kai series adds distance) but I actually prefer the extra distance.

I'm a Hayabusa and Semitsu lover, myself, so the MC stick actually was a total turnoff because of its higher cost, lack of touchpad and my need to swap out the lever and buttons. For the cost of a TE2 I was able to get a V4 Kai, 2lb spring and 8 seimitsu buttons to get everything just right. I also prefer the aesthetics of the case for the HRAP V series, so there's that bonus.

Yeah, I'm going to have to glue some washers or weights into the underbelly of mine.

Time for me to ask a silly question. I'm looking at the Hori images on Amazon and not seeing where the touchpad is located. Also, maybe its just not clicking for me, but I'm not seeing why the touchpad is super important?

It's on the back, which they don't show in pictures.

It's not *super* important, but if you play on someone else's system and they have a different button config than you use, changing them becomes a fairly big hassle. Also, if you give two shakes about viewing the necessary control inputs in the trials, it's required.

The button config is enough to justify it for me (plus it's cheaper), and there are other fighters that use the pad in various ways too.

Touchpad is in the front of the stick.

It's useful because it's used for bringing up the button setting menu in USF4 character select. Also used for resetting positions in training mode in MKX (and I believe USF4 too).

We have not confirmed a TE S+ is coming out on PS4 yet.

Oh. Damn.

Hoping it does get announced. I MUCH prefer the old TE's body style to the TE2 and hopefully Mad Catz will offer more options for the PS4 considering we saw the SE and TE last generation.

Come on Mark, make it happen!

Hmm... guess I'll stick with the default art for a while I guess. I'll probably buy the Hori later this week. Disappointed the cheap-o modded stick I got is completely fucked on PC. So having to pay close to the TE2 already for a PC stick. :/ At least the Hori will save me money and is quality?

Everything I hear about the Hori is that it comes down to preference between Hyubasa and JLF and Kuro vs. Sanwa/Semitsu buttons.

I don't mind the Kuro, but they only seem to come in black, which mucks with my customization plan...

I'm not convinced that having a touch pad for a PS4 stick is vital, but we'll see

When USF4 PS4 becomes the standard at Capcom Pro Tour I'm pretty sure they'll end up patching in alt controls for button config out of necessity, since I imagine most people will be using PS3 sticks. But of course there's no way to know for sure.

Well that comes with Hyubasa and Kuro. But honestly, I don't know anything about the buttons or sticks. So long as it works on PC, I can't really care.

They should become standard on future sticks, imo. You lose out on some functionality without them, and I don't want fighters to have to implement some wonky UI controls or worse leave UI features out due to being shorted one button. For example, it would suck if not having a touch pad meant that Capcom left out some sort of quick rest feature in training mode in SFV just so they don't alienate early stick purchasers.

Sony should should have left select and start as they've always been and it never would have been an issue.

I don't disagree that it should be standard, but between the TE2s, the Venom, and PS3 sticks, the fact is that a lot of fighting game players are going to be using sticks that just don't have the touch screen button, and games like SF4/5 should limit touchscreen button functionality with this in mind.

I picked up the Hori EX for SFV beta and I am enjoying it (though having a hell of a time doing Cannon Spike..though I chalk that up to rush and scrubbiness).
Will probably pick up a Madcatz as soon as I can find a way to get rid of my PS3 TE2.
I wish there was a trade in program, trade it in for some credit toward a new stick.

I disagree that they should limit the software's features. I think a game's UI should be based on the default console controller's functionality, and that's the DS4 that has a touchpad. It's the de facto standard controller everyone gets with the system and one a lot of people use. It's up to the stick manufacturers to mimic that functionality or not. If they based their stick designs on controller standards from previous generations or other consoles, that's their bad. Future software should not be held back as a result.

Hearing everyone talk about the PS4 touchpad support makes me want to cancel my Madcatz TE2 rivals order.

I think right now only the Hori HRAP 4 Kai has the touchpad? Looking, on the latency test though it seems they are pretty bad compared to the TE2. Any opinions between the two sticks?

Read hikaru's post above, it covers the bases pretty well.

The latency test really doesn't mean much, imo. But that's me. For 90% of players I think it really isn't going to make a huge difference either.
