Upgrade to Windows 10?

I'm running Windows 10. Just been playing about with settings and seeing what's new.

I have to say it feels really sluggish for me. 8.1 was very fast/smooth but 10 seems to struggle opening games/dealing with menus. Too early to say but performance in Witcher 3 seems worse. Seems to be quite a bit of stuttering. I'll need to spend more time before deciding if I should go back to 8.1

That's disappointing. I'm on 8.1 currently and happy with it. Think it's best to stay put for a few weeks?

Since I seem to be doing tech support on here now :) what is the issue?

I got the update, it all worked and when I finally logged in I've got no driver for my 970 which is half expected, but nothing will open. I can't even right click and open display settings as it comes up with an error saying my trial period for this app has expired! Wtf! I can't get onto the windows store and the task bar in left hand corner doesn't work. I can open up this pc shortcut and look through my files but that seems to be all I can do. I can't even find windows update to see if it's half arsed it. It feels like half an operating system at this point :s

Got Win 10 installed OK on my laptop but the download will just not play nice for my (Error # 80240031). I have a Win 10 USB ready to go, can I just install via that?

Just upgraded from 8.1 pro to 10 pro with the media tool, all fine and dandy not a big issue but noticed that steam game updates don't start at all. Was going to use the reset option to reinstall a fresh instance, will this keep the current activation key?

Yes...I would tell you to first try uninstalling steam...you should be able to backup your downloaded games first...

Better to try uninstalling a program first before reinstalling windows

That went well, once I forced the update.

I'm going to upgrade my parents' laptops this weekend. They don't understand Windows 8.1 at all, and I can't wait to stop having to explain where the taskbar went.

Alright, I need some help. I've tried installing Windows 10 3 times now and each time I get this:

I changed something a few months ago to get Japanese characters to display correctly and I'm assuming that's where my problem lies but I'm not sure how to fix it.

I didn't notice a difference performance wise, I have a fairly beefy rig though - i7 5930k, 32 GB RAM, 980 Ti, 3x 512 GB SSDs

When you first install also Windows indexes your data for fast searching, and as a result I noticed quite a bit of activity on my SSDs. Could explain the stuttering for some. This stopped after about 3 hours or so.

Anybody tried any games yet? Hows performance? I am gonna give GTA V a shot here when the 60 gig download is done.

Just loaded up GTA V and feels the same as it did on 8.1.

I tried Witcher 3 and got stuttering in areas I don't remember experiencing it. I haven't played it in over a month so maybe it's nothing to worry about.

nm I need to keep looking

I had this exact same problem. I ended up using http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and choose to do a boot drive method (upgraded from USB flash drive). It completed in English that way.

You know that's what I'm thinking it is. I've only had 10 installed a few hours now so maybe something was going on in the background since updating like you say. Seems a bit snappier now. Need to spend more time with 10 before seeing what's what.

Anyone updating this way - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Seems to be working for me so far but not completed yet...fingers crossed!

worked earlier, had an installation issue with old drivers, rolled back to W7. Now the setup gets to 60% and gives me an error stating "setup couldn't start properly".

I'd do this but it says my Windows key is invalid.

I keep getting the error - we couldnt update the system reserved partition...

ARGH!

Any ideas?

I tried some "fix" online abut creating a "Y" drive and inputting several prompts but that method has not worked!

Cool GTA is almost done then start Witcher. As long as its mostly the same and not broken I will be fine with that.

Can anyone shed light, I updated using the tool as windows update was downloading so slow. Everything seems fine except it says its not activated, when I hit the button to activate it says it can't. Do I need to punch in my win 7 key or is it just server issues.

So far so good, my only problem is my wireless 360 controller. I bought one of those unofficial adapters and now it's not working. Anyone else had any luck? Are there new drivers I could download?

I have a random wireless adapter and I got it to work easily by just going to device manager and double clicking on the device. Update drivers and choose from a list on your pc. Scroll all the way to the bottom and you should see xbox 360 wireless adapter or something similar. Just pick that and it will work.

I just read that Windows Media Center does not work in Windows 10. I use WMC to watch and record OTA tv. Is there any other software out that that handles both of these features in W10? Does it work as well as WMC?

Thank you, I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. I'll try this.

Just FYI I used that method too and mine was still in Japanese. The problem is your system locale which is set to Japanese. Why the installer uses your locale and not your system language is beyond me.

I'd do this but it says my Windows key is invalid.

Mine did too even though I know I entered it correctly and triple checked. I clicked on "skip" and it just preceded through without a problem. I think that it asks for a key because it's for installing on a different computer, but if you just skip and move forward on your comp, it updates normally.

From what it looks like it seems to have o ly half installed the os. Like all the applications apart from Explorer are saying they don't work. I can't even find them in my programs folder so they seem to have not installed. So strange.

Yeah you might have had an error in installing. I would do the reset and choose keep files so none of your files will be deleted, but it will reinstall the os (you will lose installed programs)

How do I go about doing that? Sorry I've gone from win7 to win10 so completely new to the layout

I used the update tool to make a usb stick and updated to windows 10 without any problems. Gf did a clean install with same usb stick no problems. I tried some Tomb raider and it was really smooth. I don't really know if it was any better than before but it was damn nice regardless.

Settings app - update tab and then go to recovery...its the top option

Except you don't have that working...darn

Yup. Lol I went into recovery in the control panel where it says "if you are having problems with your pc, go to settings and try resetting it. Clicked on it with the same error" your trial period for this app has expired. Visit the windows store to purchase the full app"

What. The. Fuck. Is. Going. On.

Lol :/

Hello guys,

I am on Xbox App version 7.7.21024.00000 and can connect to the Xbox One fine. However I have absolutely no stream options (no Test Stream or any of the buttons on the connect screen).

And when I click "Stream games now" from the home screen I get:

Unable to stream because either the xbox app or your console needs to be updated. Make sure they are both up to date and try again.

I have checked for updates on both and both are up to date.

Any ideas?

SOLUTION EDIT: It was because I was on Windows 10 Pro N. For N and KN versions of Windows, you need to install this pack: https://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=48231

Same for me, although the OS seemed fine from what I messed around with.

Might try to do a clean install later.

I didnt use the tool, I force updated. But after my update I had the same problem regarding activation. I right clicked the start menu>System>Activate Windows>Activate and got a message that it couldn't activate. So I opened up the Windows store and then went back to clicking the activate button and it worked lol.

Download this and use to make install media...you can then do a reinstall on top and keep your files

Shall I download the media creation tool thing with the ISO and try reinstalling it that way? I won't need a product code will I if I already have win10? Well the shell of win10 that I currently have

Edit: you literally answered my question as I typed it haha

Activation sever is getting hammered

So when I go to control panel and check for updates, Windows says it's up to date...but when I run the troubleshooter for the windows 10 app not showing up, I get a message saying windows is not up to date. Okay, I officially got no idea what's wrong with this PC.
