Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I just put all the files I wanted onto a flash drive. Too much unnecessary crap that would make a backup even worse. Luckily all my games are on steam and I grabbed the savefiles I needed too. Here we go!

So I've done a clean install but I noticed I only had half my SSD space, checking the folders I saw that the install took the entirety of previous PC and put it inside the folder of Windows.old

Anyway to get rid of it? I tried manually deleting it but it said I needed permission from SYSTEM.

Use disk cleanup. It should list something like "previous windows installation".

Had the same problem.

Do a disk cleanup.

You can't do that.

You would have to install on the new motherboard, skip CD key entry because we only have generic keys, and then ring microsoft.

It has always been against EULA to transfer licenses to new motherboards, but they may still allow you to. You would probably have to specify the microsoft account the specific windows 10 install is linked to.

Oh man, that's a massive bummer, but thanks for saying something. I guess now I can move on using a different method than what I had originally planned.

I don't think anybody answered me this in this thread earlier and I can't get a straight answer from Google either so again, what version of office am I getting with the upgrade? (upgrading from Win7)

Also, will it be a scott-free upgrade to the most recent version of Office or is there a subscription fee red-tape involved?

For all the people wanting to get rid of that ugly log in screen image : https://github.com/PFCKrutonium/Windows-10-Login-Background-Changer/releases/tag/1

You can set your own.

I got a Trojan.MSIL.Dropper warning from that file, might be a false positive but best to be safe!

I've upgraded 6 computers today with no issues but I have one that absolutely refuses to upgrade. 'Something happened'... it's a pain in the arse. A week old Windows 7 Home Premium x64 install, fully updated & activated but it just won't have it. Using the same ISO as I used for all the other computers as well which I made with the media creation tool this morning :(

So I'm stuck at the log-in screen as my keyboard and mouse aren't registering. They're both lit-up as normal but for some reason not working...if I unplug them and plug them back in again, they don't light up at all.
I've tried different ports but it didn't help. Its also giving me an unhandled exception error randomly on restarts. Fuck me. Anything I can do?

Just got a bunch of fun errors trying to empty my recycle bin because it couldn't delete the files because the files were not there to delete (? ok?)

The same version you already have installed.

You can join the office insider preview if you want 2015.

Say I want to do a clean install now, but have a shit ton of programs on a D:\ drive. Can I just delete the Program Files (x86) folder there and and then use the Reset option to completely clean their existence?

For whatever reason nvidia would not allow me to uninstall the drivers via their uninstaller so had to use DDU, was smooth sailing after that.

Oh no! Sorry about that, might be because the tool was designed to modify a windows file. I've removed the link, just to be safe. I can say that it worked for me.

Interesting issue... I've hit a "device limit" after installing Windows 10 on my tablet. I have two devices - my PC and my tablet. As a result, unless I delete my PC (the first device) from my profile, which will prevent me using the Windows store on it, I can't use any apps on my tablet.

O_O

FYI - the Microsoft Answer Tech I chatted to suggested I roll back my tablet and install again. Not sure how that would help, but what the hell. I'll report back with my findings...

Things are going well

Tried the fix on Reddit to no avail where you delete the files in that download folder and run the command prompt thing twice. 8.1 was a much easier update through the Store.

Same here, tried Reddit fix a few times, no go.

So if i upgrade from Windows 7 is it a simple straightforward process?

What I mean is will everything still work without instilling new drivers, software etc?

Like iTunes, graphics drivers, Usenet programs, Chrome cookies.

Is like to upgrade but I'm worried stuff won't work, particularly my NAS setups and shares.

Is it stable?

So My Windows upgrade icon says it will notify me when to upgrade since it's doing it in waves, can I use the Media Creation Toll and upgrade now instead?
should I be OK?

Okay, I have nothing but positive things to say about this so far. My PC (severely underpowered) is running noticeably faster. The UI is nice looking, there are lots of useful little additions. No bugs or anything, no hitches.

Heh, I've only clicked the "Let's do it" button but I've already gotten stuck at the "Working on it" screen for several minutes via the Get Windows 10 app.

Should it take this long?

Methods to remove Modern (Windows App Store) apps from Windows 8 still work in Windows 10; using them I was able to remove Weather and some of the other built-in apps that don't uninstall properly (OneNote). Cortana is listed, but it's not clear to me if it would break non-Cortana search to remove it.

Edit: Removing the "ZuneMusic" and "ZuneMovies" (I guess now just called "Groove Music" and "Movies & TV") modern apps is safe; links to the apps from the store or whatever don't error, they just gracefully stop doing anything.

That used to happen to me on Win7 all the time. "Blah blah blah is located on a drive which is unavailable." Thankful I haven't run into anything so persistently annoying on 10.

Office 2013 32 bit did not work on my install, but switching to 64 bit fixed it for me. In case anyone else is having trouble.

No worries, it's probably safe enough! Malwarebytes wouldn't let me run it though :( I wonder if you can do it manually...

man I remember I had to change some register stuff about power options on win 7 to get my laptop to stop making this annoying CPU whine (cant disable C-states on BIOS)

hopefully it retains or is as easily editable on w10 :X

I haven't heard U.K. cortana but U.K. AI voices are always fucking disgusting.

I set both Siri and Google Now to the US. It's worth the drop in comprehension.
Just got it set up and yea UK cortana is awful, and changing the region to US stops it from working.

That's enough to make me avoid using it.

So what exactly is the point of using the icon in the task tray to "reserve" Windows 10 when you can go ahead and upgrade manually using the media creation tool the OP posted.. Are their any advantages over using the tool or is it just waiting for proper OEM support before MS gives you the okay.

So you just boot from USB/DVD, format everything and it installs without asking you for a key?

You don't even need to do that. There's a built in reset option, which wipes the system partition (or all partitions if you so choose) and reinstalls Windows.

It was designed to distribute the download load over several days instead of expecting everyone to start at midnight.

That's all.

There is another way using Powershell and command prompt but I'm not sure if that will work. Hopefully someone releases a better tool. I'm not sure why Microsoft didn't include an option in the personalization settings for this.

Probably just a way to get less computer savvy people on W10 without them having to think about it or really do anything but wait for the upgrade message? MS really want as many people as possible on W10.

What if my SSD dies? What then?

Then you put it on a USB stick or DVD and install from there, of course. Once you've upgraded your license is tied to your hardware ID (which I think comes from your motherboard?), so you can reinstall without a key even with a new drive.

Still waiting on my update. Didn't think it would take this long but eh whatever.
Same here, & I did the thing to "reserve" my laptop to be ready for Windows 10's update when it was out. I keep checking for updates, & nothing. Though I can't even find the icon you'd click to learn about the Windows 10 update anymore.

Mine's still there but who knows for how long. Over the past 24 hours I've learned to just be patient and if it comes it comes.

The moment I turn on Cortana or any windows function that accesses my wifi (including turning off wifi sense), my wifi disconnects. I use a belkin usb adapter. Anyone else seeing this problem? I'm just going to wire up.

Looks like if you use a VPN with an external client, the track network usage by app function completely breaks because all the usage is recorded under the VPN app

Just installed.

My Desktop Settings and Personalize don't work, it's says there is no default program associated with those. Ummm, what?

I don't even see where to set that in Default Apps or what app I would even link to if I found it.

EDIT: Doing it from the control panel works, just not from right-clicking on the desktop.
