Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I fucking finally did it.

Windows 10 Pro 64bit Activated and installed.

Fuck me.

All that effort fixed with a simple registry edit fucking joke.

The only bad thing about Window's eternal backwards compatibility (post 16 bit) is that we'll never be rid of the shitshow that is the registry

Wow, Aero Snap is so much better than before.

Not only can you snap quarters and suggestions for further windows to snap will be made, it even works with non-half/half splits (i.e., snap one window, resize its width and the second snapped window will fill the remaining screen space).

A question:
The time I updated from W7 to 8 with the cheap launch upgrade, the key for 7 was not to be found in the system of 8 (AFAIR you can even install full & new with the upgrade disc and a small change in registry). Does that mean that with my jump from 8 to 10 the key for my old 7 is still "free" to use and the upgrade key is only the one from upgrade 8?

Took me forever, but I got the bloody thing to install finally. I was having the issue where it would hang on 25% Copying Files. Managed to get it to install after trying a solution I saw on Reddit. For whatever reason, Windows 10 really didn't like my DVD Drive, so I was forced to pull it out. Then it swiftly installed.

Thankfully, I never really used it that much.

As I thought Windows 10 has ballsed up my directory mapping. I moved things like pictures and documents to a normal hdd and put the OS on an ssd when I was on 7. I used the recommended way of moving those folder going in to properties and changing the location but now I have a bunch of dupes and some apps are using the old location and some as using the new one. So annoying.

No. That Windows 7 key was morphed into a Windows 8 key. When you upgrade to Windows 10 then that 8 key will be morphed into a 10 key. You can still go back to Windows 8 within a month of upgrading but you won't be able to use that same key to go back to Windows 7. That's from what I understand.

But if you use a trick like http://lifehacker.com/5984278/how-to-do-a-clean-install-of-windows-8-with-an-upgrade-disc there was never a windows 7 key used for the upgrade.

I always hoped for a list in the MS account which Windows were activated and to deactivate it online to sell it ^^

How do I know if Windows Update is downloading something in Win10? It is hard to tell.

Microsoft really needs to do something about how Windows 10 handles permissions. It's dumb that I have to figure out how to re enable permissions for the one and only user account on my pc. At least copy the windows 7 settings. Fixed my music and pictures folder issues. Now documents gives me trouble.

Can we set desktop as download folder?

Try from command prompt

Yeah, I googled before and got those. But it doesn't put hibernate in the power menu where it was there on previous windows. So I'm not sure if it's an upgrade bug or my motherboard/BIOS doesn't have hibernate for Windows 10 yet or what... annoying. I really want Hibernate back so I can stop shutting down.

Had a pain in the ass issue for a while now but finally fixed it.

My main machine has Windows 7 64-bit on it, and I installed Windows 10 on my other hard drive as a dual boot and activated it fine. However I then switch to my Windows 7 and it complains that Windows 7 is deactivated (I guess the dual installation of Win 10 caused it?). It was that black screen asking for activation. Now that wasn't an issue since I was going to enter my Win 7 key but wait, none of my USB devices are working, neither keyboard/mouse. So I couldn't enter jack shit. Safemode? Same shit. They didn't even work there.

So I had to go out and buy a USB-to-PS/2 port adapter and plug my mouse into that and put that into my motherboard's single PS/2 port. The single could port on my mobo can handle dual mouse/keyboard PS/2 port but the shop didn't have that dual adapter where I could plug two USBs in. Any ways, that worked and after using Windows on-screen keyboard and uninstalling all my USB drivers + reinstalling it + activating Windows again, everything works. Now I can dual boot my existing Win 7 and new Win 10 installation just fine.

What are the permission issues you're running into? What are you changing?

You try making a shortcut out of this command?
shutdown /h

You could pin it to the taskbar, give it any icon you want.

I still haven't received the notification for installing the update, I had the $Windows.~BT folder since the 28, and I can see a few failed attemps in the Windows Update history.

The thing is, that now my $Windows.~BT folder is way more smaller, and along it I have now a bigger $Windows.~WS folder.

I won't force the update, because it's clear that something in my computer wasn't ready, which is strange, but I have patience...

Did I miss something or do they really assign a random gamertag to you when you login for the first time in the app and as such make you use up your one-time free tag change?

Anyway, while the download has been a HUGE PITA the upgrade went smooth and I'm really liking it so far. Everything feels very snappy and smooth.

Finally managed to update from Windows 8.1 to 10 on with my laptop.

Had to change the administrative language to English (US) for the Windows Media Creation Tool to work properly, then copy the content downloaded by the software to a USB key since my laptop had only less than 6GB of free space. Brrrrrrr.

Interesting bug I found. I tried to transfer money in Bank of America using Chrome for Windows 10. The option to select my mother was not popping up like it normally does. I have a user agent switcher plugin that I used to change the setting to just chrome for windows. This allowed the popup to select my mother.

Nvidia drivers are definitely buggy. I've noticed some stuttering in WOW and Shovel Knight. I'm using three monitors, with one being g-sync 144hz. Some of the stuttering happens when I have another window up on the same monitor or on another monitor.

It wants me to authentificate Office 2013 again and I have no idea where my key is :(
Would a phonecall solve this?

It did. Nice customer service :)

Well it just shut down on me, was reading on Windows 10 privacy and I guess it didn't want me to know, because whole system shut off...

Second time windows 10 has bugged (First was a huge graphical glitch) gonna chalk these up to the "upgrade" for now...

I'm going to eventually do a clean install, but still glad it wasn't worse timing...

Hey gaffers, I tried to find info on google about this but I couldn't fin anything so I would like to ask if anyone can tell me if there's any difference between the free upgrade and the paid version of Win 10? (besides the price of course :P), like if the paid version has additional features that the free one doesn't.

Nothing.

If you've ever had Games for Windows Live on the same email address, that's the one they use.

I just turned my Dropbox into my OneDrive (just pointed OneDrive to my (currently not synced) Dropbox folder). Seems more convenient since it's built into the OS, plus I have more free storage on OneDrive. Good idea, bad idea? There seem to be some concerns regarding what MS does with the files you upload there.

Ffs Office 365 keeps pestering to activate even though it says it's subscription is activated elsewhere in the program and I can't see the other PCs on my home group even though it's saying I'm correctly joined.

Typically none of MS's fixes on the net work, not even a refresh worked.

I don't think it matters much. All the big cloud providers have the same issues in that regard. Just go with whatever is convenient.

Nah, never had a Xbox Live or GFWL account at all. Oh well.

Then I have no idea. Did you just get a totally random name assigned?

Are they considering more suggestions? Hopefully they'll add in centre top/bottom for a 1/3 horizontal split for wider monitors.

Didn't know about the adjustments - that's like the old metro split which I liked.

My brightness function buttons on my laptop keyboard aren't working anymore. Is there's a general fix for this issue?

Got the prompt and updated last night, kinda liking it overall. Some observations:
- Not cool that I selected Customize instead of Express (where I disabled everything) and Windows promptly ignored them.
- WiFi is kind of spotty on my intel 6300 card, not even the newer driver on intel's site seems to help much (although it did improve noticeably).
- Tiles for non-metro apps seem to be stuck to selected color only, there is no option to show a color more akin to the icon (probably one of the few that actually liked that)
- Got so used to press Win+C to check the clock, annoying that it's no there now :( Is there any live tile that shows the time?
- Not having a keyboard shortcut for moving apps through desktops is an inconvenience.
- For some reason Win+Space to change keyboard distributions stopped working for me (it was working fine yesterday post update).

EDIT:
- VS2013 for some reason is constantly automatically switching back to a specific tab I have open. It's hilariously annoying.

You can turn it back on

Not the same though.
I can get used to the new start menu just fine, but the lack of full screen, sort-able, all apps is kinda annoying :(

Link at the bottom. The post also demonstrates the drawback of doing this. You're not going to get separate colors for focused vs unfocused windows, and you will likely end up with a weird gray box in the unfocused window.
I did it and it's kinda better, but the gray box sucks and some desktop apps seem to think I actually have the classic style in use :/
