Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Preposterous. Yes. That's an awesome word. How'd I miss noticing there were that many?

I mean, is this... really 945 rooms?

sotnmap1.png

It's not like I ever took the time to count each and every room, but...

I keep trying to go through and count the individual blocks (actual rooms, as far as I'm concerned), but I'm on my iPhone and keep losing count. Somebody with paint who can mark the room as they count should count them.

What is a room? (no pun intended).

A save room is a 1x1 block. That's a room, by the mere definition of it.

But what about a big area that's 5x3 blocks? Is that a room? or is that 15 "rooms"?

Personally, I believe that a save room (like a 1x1 block) and a X by Y block "area" (like, let's say, the stair-looking area in the top left of that map) are two distinct rooms, as long as there are no doors or walls or loading separating the two of them. In this example, that's 2 rooms

If we're counting every single small 1x1 space as a room, I can see those numbers.

The whole thing is 47 blocks high by 61 wide, if I counted correctly. Making a guess at the density, dividing the area by three gives 955 blocks, which is pretty close.

I manually counted 946.

I don't know why I did that. It was tedious.

You are the hero we deserve!

So SotN had 1800+ rooms if you count the inverted castle. Should we count the inverted castle though? Its not like it added unique rooms to the count. If I am reading this correctly, Iga is going to give us 1600 unique rooms. Of course I could be totally wrong...

What's truly amazing is that some of us have them all memorized. I love the fact that we can soak so much up by not really even having to pay attention.

Yeah thats crazy. Have it memorized and know where every single breakable wall is, know what kind of enemies are in the rooms and what loot they drop, know the optimal way through each room if youre trying to get through it as fast as possible.

I only played SotN once, so I don't have much of it memorized. Especially not the Inverted Castle.

But I definitely know the feeling.

Sort of aside, but I remember having so much difficulty on the first boss. I must have died twenty times before I sort of figured out how to fight very defensively. But it was still really, really hard and took more luck than skill.

The first boss, for me, was hands down the hardest part of the game. Alucard gets so powerful so quickly. But that first fight was like flailing pathetically against a wrecking ball.

I guess its too late now but this link has a grid map of both SOTN castles that should make it easier to understand what a "Room" entails.

I think it's less that there are physical copies and more that these things were properly planned and communicated from the start.

Sure but I was specifically pointing out that some aspects that Alex mentioned are just things that not every Kickstarter can replicate, regardless of how well they are run.

I would rather they just delay it, personally.

It's been like two years(?) and we are still waiting on Shovel Knight content. Which is fine, but not how I would rather see it done in this case.
It definitely hasn't been two years. It's been a bit over one year on PC, under a year on Nintendo platforms (at least in the EU), and a couple of months on Sony/Xbox.

Agree that they still have a lot to do, but it's not like it's part of the main campaign we're waiting on when you say 'content', it's extra campaigns, characters etc. Yacht Club's team size is also tiny, and they've been pretty good at keeping backers informed.

1600 rooms is pretty goddamned big. I think that Knytt Underground was around that, and that game was looooooooooooooong.

SWEET MOTHER! This game sounds like everything I could possibly hope for in a 'vania game. With the rogue-like, multiplayer, and classic modes, I definitely see myself getting my full $360 investment worth-while. Sounds and looks incredible.

That Knytt Underground map layout actually reminded me of the placeholder map shown on the kickstarter as the map given for the $500 tier:

What if this isn't a totally random place holder, but in fact the actual map! This was shown before the "IGA's Largest Castle" tier was hit, so potentially it's even bigger.

Notice the cool stained glass shards laid throughout.

Also, notice how the map is laid out with clear grid-lines... suggesting "rooms"? Anyone feel like estimating the room count on this place-holder map?

I'm estimating and of 2017 myself.. Most likely after Star Wars Episode 8 for sure...

The best part is, you probably didn't actively try to memorize it, it just happened.

One of the rewards is to have my name in the credits at the tier I pledged. First let me explain that my Mother, few of her most favorite games were Lunar 1 and 2, Suikoden 1 and 2, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

She liked the more light hearted jRPGs with the happy endings and what not. Stuff like Lunar, Ni no Kuni, and similar games she liked to play, but of them all Castlevania in particular was special in this case because she had a perfect save. 200.6% Castle completion, every single item in the game, the entire enemy datalog completed, basically everything you could do in the game was done.

Bloodstained is more or less a spiritual successor to that game. I actually originally pledged it not only because I also am a fan of the game, but with the intent to play it together with my Mom.

However on Sunday, July 19th, my Mother passed away.

I wonder if it would be an issue to have my Mom's name in the credits instead of mine. I don't know how the post-kickstarter survey works.

I was hoping somehow this could be done in dedication to her, and it will be something to look forward to when I eventually play the game in 2017 when it eventually releases.

I am so sorry for your loss. I agree that this would be a great tribute. I hope that they will allow you to put your pledge in her name.

Yeah, let it be said I am a huge fan of Shovel Knight and Yacht Club. It was just a different stretch goal model.

I was totally off with how long it has been out, though. Amazing how my relationship with Shovel Knight feels so much longer than it's really been.

Oh maaan, I had a huge smile on my face while reading your post until the news...

So sorry for your loss, and yes, it'll probably allow you to put her name in there. If it won't by the rules, then I hope someone from the publisher reads this and make you an exception.

Any "name in the credits" reward generally just sends you a survey asking how you want to be credited in game. Some might have rules like no urls or advertising, but yeah I think just entering someone elses name should be fine.

Didn't one of the friends of the speed-runners passed away too? They dedicated a portrait of him in-game. Definitely try to contact the Bloodstained staff about "in memory of" remembrances.

Do you know who, or who the speed runner was? This is the first I've heard of it.

New misterious character announced at Gamescom:

swuNo15.jpg

An unnamed demon hunter. A hero that wields two swords and uses ofuda spells.

Didn't they mention that he was the first demon hunter from when demons first came to Earth?

My guess is that he is the protagonist to the prequel game. And makes an appearance in Bloodstained in some form.

Is Xbone and PC cross-play the only cross-play option this game will have? What about PSV/PS4?

It was funny : IGA comes bringing a whip, Castlevania weapon per excellence, but I'm pretty sure no character in Bloodstained uses a whip.

I love Castlevania and am pretty excited for this game, but I'm really not a fan of the art style. I was hoping for something more explicitly gothic.

It's definitely no Symphony of the Night.

It's a lot more pop-gothic, which is not what I would prefer, but I'm waiting to see enemies and environments on screen to make a judgment. I feel, so far, that I haven't seen an ensemble of content meshed together and it's keeping me from picturing the final game.

This new character reminds me a bit of the main character for the latest Castlevania games on the consoles.
Yeah, he does look like Gabriel. I wonder if he wanted to put in some homage after all, which would probably be a surprise to a lot of us if so.

If it isn't coincidence though it also makes me wonder if we may be looking at who could end up as the real antagonist. Or at least someone who gives into their implied dark side at some point.

I don't think Bloodstained has a proper vampire either despite the vampire push in the campaign. And the game does actually have whips for Miriam.
