Destiny's year one legendary gear isn't upgradeable in year two

Our recent visit to Bungie headquarters confirmed what many fans have suspected for some time. Older legendary armor and weapons from across Destiny’s first year are not set to progress in power as Year Two begins. Simultaneously, dozens of new weapons and armor pieces are entering the game in an effort to revitalize the collection and discovery experience of the game.

“I definitely feel like some of our players are ready to play with some new toys,” says creative director Luke Smith. “And we’ve built a whole bunch of new toys. There are definitely some weapons that you are going to find better versions of – there’s going to be something that replaces that sniper rifle that you love.”

Not surprising, there's a ton of gear now.

Good.

The hunt for etheric light to ascend legendary gear/weapons now and hating PvP in this game is ridiculously hard to do.

Worst news to come out today. Slap in the face to year 1 grinders. Not sure if I am buying TTK even though I have way too many hours in Destiny Year 1 and I already collected everything.

They will still be usable and usefull in normal crucible since damage is normalized, right?

Bungie better give us larger vaults then, I've spent along time accumulating the gear I have. I better not have to bin the lot to make room for new gear...

They probably want to really push year 2 weapons and gear, seeing as they have more than likely tuned all of the Taken King with new weapons and abilities in mind.

So there will be no point to doing the old raids then?
That's kind of stupid. Might as well take them out of the game. All the best Legendaries come from those 2 raids.

You know what would have been great. Telling people this before we farm Etheric Bullshit to level our Year 1 gear just for it to be outdone in the very next DLC.

I agree it's a slap in the face, I think it's a huge mistake.

The old raids are completely useless now and that is a shame.

No this is fine if the new gear is good...it wasn't in the expansions.
That is the big question, I don't have much faith it will be better than the stuff we are using.

Year 1 weapons might be still good in Crucible then I see no reason to shard my The Devil You Know, Shadow Price and other weapons which I roll perks for PvP.

Still sucks raid weapons gonna be obsolete. I don't wanna shard my Fatebringer or VoC.

FUCK

This is such a bummer. I honestly have found worthwhile legendaries to be harder to come across than Exotics. Hopefully there's enough in Taken King to make it worthwhile.

This is standard MMO practice, really. Gear becoming obsolete is when a lot of people realize whether they like MMOs or not.

The biggest misstep Destiny did was allow people to upgrade their exotics, which then lead to Etheric Light because why should I have to get new stuff when I have old stuff?

Seriously if this game is still around in four years, why would you still want people using Fatebringer and Vision of Confluence? Cut the cord already, people.

I'm okay with this if the new weapons and armour are good. The point of the game is to progress with better gear and weapons so it makes sense.

[Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]

I don't see the problem. Isn't this how every loot based game works? New content, new shinies.

This is a good thing.

Every new DLC you basically got the same guns with new skins and names and damage values. With re rolling an option, it basically made the Vault gear the best stuff in the game and every other legendary wasn't really worth the time. This was needed for any longevity, as much as I'll miss how good the Vault of Glass guns are.

They'll still kick ass in PVP though.

They are some of the best weapons in the game. There's no reason to cut the cord on those weapons when bungie hasn't made better weapons but hopefully there will be better weapons in the expansion than either of them I just doubt it so far.

So nearly everything we've done so far has been worthless? Thanks, Bungie!

If we get to bring Year 1 exotics into Year 2 it's fine that legendary gear gets left behind. It's exotics where all that time and blood is in, leveling some vanilla exos takes forever.

Hate to say it but this is right, Bungie should never have lost control of the game which they did with ascending and rerolling weapons

Indeed, but you usually get a) more than a year with it and b) more than enough content to replace it.

Oh shit, I said the c-word :(

i wouldn't mind this as much if their track record with new weapons wasn't so bad. i still have nightmares about how awful and situational the PoE weapons/gear is. hell, black hammer aside, the weapons from crota's raid were already pretty bad but they went one level worse with PoE. The ToO weapons are alright tho.

Well, this means I don't have to bother trying to get a good roll anymore. Guess it's to be expected, but still kinda bummed about it.

Don't those raids still offer a chance at exotics? Isn't that what most current max level players do raids for as of HoW anyway? Other than the raids just being fun, I mean. A lot of people already have the armor and legendaries from these raids, but people still do them. Must be doing them for something.

There will probably be a way to upgrade Exotics.

But them leaving current Legendary items behind is no surprise at all to me. Standard MMO expansion thing.

They -were- the best but they -weren't- the best when the damage on weapons were increased. Bungie allowed these weapons to hang around with Etheric Light and now they need to finally kick them to the curb once and for all. I had fun with my VoG and Crota gear. I really did. I'm just ready for a new endgame landscape to hit. It's honestly bad enough that they'll likely let you upgrade your exotic weapons -again- instead of creating a brand new set of weapons to use, let alone allowing literally ever purple weapon and armor put into the game able to be used in the endgame. It's impossible to create new stuff when the landscape is so crowded.

if they would be the only weapons at 365 they wouldn't be useless. the new ones will be 500 or so and fine.

Only took 4 posts for someone to use the good ol' "slap in the face" line. It seemed like every thread on the WoW forums used this line.

If you guys honestly thought your Ghorns would follow you for 10 years in Destiny, i'm sorry. And while i'm sad to see old favorites go, i'm excited to see what new loves i'll find in year two.
