So, I've actually given a listen to the track list so far and I actually really rather like it. I could go into detail about every song, but I'll just list the highlights, the surprises and the duds.
Highlights
"Toys in the Attic" - Aerosmith - At first I wondered why this song when there are other, more famous songs out there by the band, but listening to it again it's actually really rather good for everything. I plan to dig out GHA, remember why I loved everything about it besides Joe Perry's fretboard and play this to get me up for it.
"Kick It Out" - Heart - I do still want Crazy on You and Magic Man. But this song is still amazing. Heart's first two albums were really something special.
"Lazaretto" - Jack White - I bought all the White Stripes packs and the Raconteurs pack the moment I heard this song once it was announced. Was a fan of those bands, but never got the packs before. But this, damn, I love this. I really, really do. It sold me on the setlist already, and the first batch was really good.
"My God is the Sun" - Queens of the Stone Age - Love it. Love it, love it, love it. Smooth Sailing plz.
"A Passage to Bangkok" - Rush - My first thought after seeing this announced was "Why not Headlong Flight?" But after a while, that stopped being the point. I love Rush, anything is good, particularly more from 2112.
"At Night in Dreams" - White Denim - Psychadelic and sounds fun as hell on guitar. Really, a lot of the soundtrack sounds good, but this one stood out to me.
Surprises
"Hail to the King" - Avenged Sevenfold - I'm not really an A7X fan. Beast and the Harlot, Bat Country and Almost Easy I rather like. Shepard of Fire I don't mind, and I bought it more because it was new RB3 DLC than anything. Afterlife came with Track Pack 2 and I absolutely despise it. So Far Away is boring and whiny, and the rest I don't care about (though there's one there that I really hate, forgot the name). So I didn't know what to expect going into this song. It's not so bad. Definitely better than Shepard of Fire, could be rather fun.
"Halls of Valhalla" - Judas Priest - I'd never properly listened to Judas Priest, despite how much I liked Screaming for Vengeance. Would've preferred the studio version of British Steel for RB too, but that's neither here not there. Anyway, wasn't sure what to expect from modern Judas Priest, but it's really, really good.
"Dream Genie" - Lightning Bolt - It's noise rock. What the fuck is this shit? And why is it so good? Sounds like it'll be fun to play on guitar and bass. Were it not for the vocals it'd be the obligatory "final tier on everything" song.
"Birth in Reverse" - St. Vincent - I listened to it at first and thought it was okay, something that I'd listen to later. But...I found myself listening it again and again, more than anything I actually knew and liked from the soundtrack beforehand. It's really stood out to me.
Duds
"Centuries" - Fall Out Boy - Things started out so well for Fall Out Boy in Rock Band. Dead On Arrival is a brilliant bit of that emo/punk/pop genre. This Ain't a Scene is good, despite the awkward censoring, Dance, Dance I love and even though I hated Sugar, We're Going Down when I was in my teenage years I do respect it for what it is now. The other stuff like I Don't Care isn't that bad, but this song...It's just awful. It sounds so fake, produced, a formulaic hit that was made to play in football stadiums while waiting for things to happen. Plus it's such a departure from their early stuff which, while not always a bad thing, was in this case. It's like if you had a whole batch of good songs and picked this. It's like if there was a Maroon 5 song and Payphone was picked because it's modern rather than Harder to Breathe which is good.
And if a Maroon 5 song is in the game and it's Payphone is in the game as opposed to Harder to Breathe then congrats on Rock Band 4 having a worse setlist then Skrillex Hero Live.
---
There are other songs here and there that I liked but haven't clicked quite so well. At least not yet. Others aren't so bad but just really aren't my taste, such as the Soul Remnants song. And others I also really like, but I kind of wish were replaced with other songs. No One Like You is a great song, but I really want The Sails of Charon instead. It was on Gran Turismo 5 and it just stuck with me since then. Shame that it's not on Spotify though.
So far, the setlist might hasn't reached the high highs of Rock Band 3 (25 or 6 to 4, Free Bird, In the Meantime, Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, etc.) but on average it's really, really much better than RB3 so I'm looking forward to it, as well as the other, yet to be announced songs. Really, the only thing from it that I don't like is Centuries, and I really, really, really don't like it. RB1 is still king, but it always will be.
