Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

The real time meters are basically turning this game into "time management" the game.
Since you can manage mother base while out on a mission you constantly need to think about what you're going to research at the base, every second not researching/constructing is a waste since the resource is the players time.
You can't even relax when out on a mission.

Such is the life of the leader of an international mercenary organization.

Yes you can, I didn't worry about the operations when I was playing Dragon Age Inquistion. I just played and was like "Oh...that's done....neat!"

Of course you CAN relax, it's just you'll be wasting valuable time if you don't have anything cooking back at mother base at all times.

I have to say I'm still a little nervous with everything. The Kojima/Konami stuff, the "Clash of Gears" time stuff, the apparently HUGE scope... Can it be pulled off? I hope so but I'll have to see it to believe it.
I'm kind of feeling the same way.

I want this to be the most awesome game ever but Konami's circumstances and all the Kojima related problems have me nervous.

Let's cross our fingers.

Mother Base is everything I hoped it would be. EVERYTHING. I've had high hopes for the feature ever since it was revealed, but I always had lingering doubts in the back of my head on whether it could actually deliver on the promise or not.

But it's like Kojima just gets me, man. With every new tidbit in this video I was just nodding along. "Yup - that's exactly what I was hoping to have confirmed"

I literally don't even really care about MGS5's open world or missions. I consider Mother Base the game. I may even micro-transact some to speed up progress.

My plan is to fulton literally every single game object in the sandbox that isn't bolted down, even to the detriment of mission success. Just FULTON EVERYTHING, and develop my Mother Base.

Best home base in a video game? Maybe. Or probably at least since Suikoden.

I wonder how much variety there is to the actual base structures. We have seen some varieties but to what extent you can customize how the base actually looks (not just color and stuff, but the whole structure)

Doubt there are any variants to the physical structure.

Also do we know if you're automatically notified of an invasion or is it based on if the intruder is detected? Would be awesome to invade and have the defender never know you were there until you make off with a portion of their staff but would suck to be on the receiving end.

The thing that makes me most nervous about MGSV is how much it's going to retcon the previous games.

Now we all know previous games have done this to an extent but I'm one of the few people who loved MGS4 (it's my fave of the series) and it had such a conclusive and satisfying finale (I don't count Rising as canon) that I don't all of that undone with 5. Basically the way 5 ends will make or break the game for me.

The thing that makes me most nervous about MGSV is how much it's going to retcon the previous games.

I really can't even hazard a guess as to how MGSV will end. Obviously we all want a crazy post-credits scenario where we play as Snake and relive/retell the events of MG1 or 2, but I could just as easily see MGSV barely even touching on anything in the rest of the series. When Peace Walker was still in production I remember being so excited to see the Metal Gear in the seventies, the formation and breakup of the Patriots, the early days of the LET project, Big Boss vs. Zero and all that; then when it came out it was basically a self-contained filler episode.

MGSV's obviously going to have more to do with the overarching story, but I wouldn't put money on anything yet. This is the first game in the series where I really can't predict how the story's going to go, even after watching all the trailers and thinking about it obsessively for months.

Looks like I will be taking a long time playing this game. The amount of stuffs that's being cramped in this game is just amazing.

Well, that is the one thing they haven't shown. They keep mentioning how the player can create shortcuts and stuff but they haven't shown how in-depth the tools for that are. Plus, choosing the location of each strut would be very important for your FOB.

...not that it matters. After everything I've seen I fully trust that the actual game will surpass my expectations.

Man, I caught myself already making plans for my FOB's layout and structure, and I know next to nothing. This is going to be insanely fun.

The FOB system looks like it'd be too much for me. So much gameplay, how could I possibly handle it all?

I didn't carry that much interest in the game until this video. Looks insanely entertaining.

Did anyone spend much time playing that Mother Base simulator on the original Ground Zeroes app? Any word on if you can import your soldiers into TPP?

I played it a bit when it came out but didn't do much, now in preparation for TPP I've been S-Ranking every GZ mission with as many points possible, getting long headshots, doing time trials, etc. trying to unlock everything in the GZ app. I just have a few officers left, beaten every mission and lvl 10'd every strut. I think we do get a bonus for using it, like some extra MB units, but I don't know how much you actually have to play and what exactly you get. Also, it doesn't work with PC GZ.

Are you sure you didn't mishear the shortcut thing? In the demo Sean mentions you'll eventually learn shortcuts, not that you can create them.

He's definitely talked before about every player designing their own Mother Base and knowing all the ins and outs. I've always imagined it as the basic, hexagonal shape of each strut is going to be the same, but you're going to place all the buildings and things yourself, but admittedly that's just guesswork since they haven't shown anything about how it works.

I'm incredibly burnt out on open-world games and their "side-missions" and what not. But man... Kojima seems to have put his resources and focus in the correct places.

I'm super impressed with what they've done with mother base and its online component.

Man I really doubt we can hand pick anything about each strut but that would be cool. See maybe a 1% chance of that happening.

You might be right. Not sure if they ever outright said it, but I still think that's the case. You might not be able to move entire buildings on the struts but you can probably place things like railings, generators and other stuff for traversal.

The reason I think this is because they said each player's base would be unique (might just be location of struts) and that each player would know their own base the best. If those little details weren't customizable everyone would know every other base just as well, right?

There's a lot of detail about FOB development that needs to be picked apart. We could do it now in this thread, screen by screen, or wait for YongYea to make a video about it.

For instance it seemed to me like you could make 'Support' decks on your FOB, just like your main Mother Base.

Actually I'll get my laptop. See if we can tear apart the menus.

EDIT:

Doesn't seem to be an option for strut customization on first glance. There are, however, seperate struts for all of the different branches of Mother Base (Support, Intel, Medical etc), so perhaps that adds variability to the designs.

For those of you who aren't feeling the translated The Best is Yet to Come, give this a listen. Probably the best cover of the song. Blends the original Gaelic with the translated English

http://youtu.be/09KlIsknha4

While this sounds utterly lovely, I almost don't want to know what the lyrics are after all these years, y'know? It's like when I find out I've been mishearing the lyrics to a song I love and all of a sudden it takes on a completely different meaning, only with an entire song this time :P

Man I really doubt we can hand pick anything about each strut but that would be cool. See maybe a 1% chance of that happening.

You might be right, I never really gave it much serious though. There must be some degree of customisation, though, because FOB invasions would get pretty easy if you were just sneaking through one of a few different prefabricated strut designs. Maybe placement of structures on the strut is randomised? I don't know.

Are you fucking kidding me with this video? Mother Base is literally another game inside MGSV...and this game is coming out in less than a month? Based Kojima.

That being said, I'm not sure if I'll like having my base being infiltrated randomly but I'm glad they have the option of turning it off and playing it offline if it gets annoying/don't feel like defending.

This game is going to consume my life. I remember how addicting the mother base management was on Peace Walker. I used to scan wi-fi networks every couple days to recruit soldiers - some of them were so OP depending on the strength of the network signal. Good times.

This pops up for like one frame, and I don't remember if we have seen this screen before, but I think the Hex shows how many platforms you have, and it also seems you upgrade your 4 main platform types by adding more platforms in close to it, but that's just a guess. The other thing is the radiation symbol. My guess would be reactor power, like a limit on how many platforms you can have before you need to up your power level. That or its how many Nukes the Diamond Dogs have, but that seems silly.

There are two different things going on with MGSV:

- Mother Base; This is your main base of operations, as introduced at the first segment of the video. This is single player only and will NEVER be invaded
- Forward Operating Base; This is a PvP-oriented game mechanic that involves a risk/reward strategy. Building a FOB will net you additional resources for your Mother Base, but it makes the FOB vulnerable to invasions from other players.

The main point is that if you don't want to deal with invasions and whatnot, you simply don't build FOB bases. But you can't both reap the rewards of additional bases and NOT deal with the risks of having those additional resources snagged away. It's nothing gamebreaking either way; the stuff from FOB bases is a bonus, per saldo it doesn't really matter if it gets "stolen" or not. And in the end you can always retaliate and steal it back. Plus some interest..

Who is doing the OT for the game ? It needs to be the most amazing OT ever. This is the last Metal Gear Solid and the end of an era. The game is Kojima's magnum opus. The OT needs to reflect this.
Surely it needs to be BruceLeeRoy after his GOAT MGS4 OT?? That OT transcended the OT format onto some higher plane to such a degree that literally every time I see his avatar I instantly think about MGS4, Literally.

Are you me?

I feel exact same way, ever since the first gameplay I felt that this game was made specifically for me, it has EVERYTHING I love about videogames.

When he first announced building Mother Base I shrugged it off as some boring necessity I would have to endure but that Gamescom video holy shit.

Those links are down but I hope they don't mess those classic sound tracks up, especially The Best is Yet to Come because that's the main one.

About customization, when Sean briefly touched on adding security to the platforms it looked like each platform was divided into zones. Each zone seemed to be numbered, perhaps we can pick the structures built on each platform and place them in different zones.

There has to be some degree of customization in placing structures and the design of each. I don't think they would talk up the idea of unique shortcuts in 2 different videos if it was as simple as just choosing platforms to build and the game doing everything else for you.

They're jazzified alternative versions, not meant to replace the originals. Just different takes while they had Donna Burke in studio, presumably.

Don't really care for Burke's renditions of those older songs. I mean she does a good job but I wouldn't want to listen to them over the originals. Quiet's Theme from Joosten is by far the best thing IMO.

Motherbase is safe, what you're seeing is the FOB (forward operating base) that has the PvP elements and is vulnerable to attacks.

Is Metal Gear 1080 or 900p I'm confused?
The Xbox One version of Metal Gear Solid V will be rendered at 900p.

The Xbox One output will blow it up to 1080p (standard fuzzy scaling tech).

PR bullshit etc.

PS4 version runs at 1080p natively. PC version runs at 4K if you have a rig good enough for it.
