Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

It's a known issue that happens if you have more than 512 entries, supposedly a fix is coming but nothing has been released yet (it wasn't on the SR1 at least).
Keep an eye on this thread.
According to PowerShell I only have 248 apps, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.
Note that these are programs which I haven't installed but I pinned to the Start Menu anyways. Still, their shortcuts should appear in the All Apps menu.

I'm having a really strange issue with my laptop (Lenovo Y510P). Every so often, it will jump up to 100% disk usage. It looks like the culprit processes are several Windows processes. This happens even when I'm doing nothing on the machine and no applications are running. When I'm actually running a program, it seems to spike up even more (if it's not happening at the time that I'm running the program). For example, it'll be running at a normal amount of usage, but if I start up a program and use it for a few minutes, the Performance Monitor shows it spiking from almost nothing to 100% and back down. Comparing this to my desktop, it never gets close to 100% usage.

The problem processes seem to be:

Windows Host Process (Rundll32)
Antimalware Service Executable (Windows Defender)
"System" process

It occasionally will die down for a short period of time, but will eventually go back up. I thought it may be some kind of malware, but Windows Defender didn't find anything after a Full Scan.

I'd appreciate any ideas.

I'd appreciate any help with this.. I brought my laptop to work to monitor it and it seems like it dies off after a few minutes after rebooting. I'll have to check how my desktop at home starts up, but it seems like abnormally high usage and it does seem to spike occasionally when the machine is doing almost nothing.

Try this:

Go to Administrative Tools -- Task Scheduler

Go to Task Scheduler Library -- Microsoft -- Windows -- Windows Defender

You should see four entries.

Open the first one, and go to the conditions tab.

Uncheck everything.

Click OK.

Do this for the other three tasks as well.

Your Windows Defender should still work, but should stop spinning everything up all the time. Hopefully.

The fuck? It's not even syncing anything. It's just using up ridiculous amounts of resources for seemingly no good reason. Which seems to happen a lot in this OS. I've been liking it overall, but yeah...

I have a pretty strange problem and I'd really appreciate some help.

My computer specs are Intel I3 with integrated graphics, an nvidia 310m card, 4gb of ram, and 500gbs. It's a 5 year old Asus laptop that still worked great.

Only issue is that the nvidia card had a caution sign on it in the device manager because it wasn't being used, but whenever I tried to update the driver, my screen would shut off when I try to restart the computer, so I left it alone.

I recently updated to Windows 10 a few days ago using the safe method to force the update to start.

However, it decided to update the nvidia driver which caused the same screen issue. No problem though, because I simply went into safe mode and uninstalled all nvidia drivers.

The next time I booted it up, I got a generic Windows Display Driver in its place.

Here's where things mess up. Whenever I try to boot the system now, it always freezes between the Windows logo and about 2-3 minututes after logging in (sometimes it freezes before the login screen).

I tried going into safe mode and uninstalling the generic Windows Display Driver, but that didn't fix the issue and the driver returned by itself.

Now here's the real interesting part: my computer doesn't freeze at all and works perfectly fine in Safe Mode, but it freezes or gets a blue screen when I boot it in Safe mode WITH networking.

Anyone have any possible solutions??

Uninstall all display drivers, reboot into BIOS and disable the Nvidia card, then reboot and install the latest Intel graphics drivers. Maybe that'll work?

So, my W10 keeps auto logging in the last person who was on. I want it to go to the lock screen on startup as both my wife and I have our own profiles. Any guesses as to why it refuses to go to the lock screen?

My W10 setup keeps freezing when Im streaming (using a capture card). Sometimes its thirty seconds, but I made it to 15 minutes. Always when streaming too, not when previewing the video. Doesnt matter the capture card nor the streaming program. Something is messed up :(

So two out of the three PC's I upgraded this week went flawlessly but my parents PC not so much...

This is the error: 0xc1900101-0x20017 The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation. It then reverts back to Win 7.

Tried with the upgrade app and via the media upgrade tool (using upgrade PC now option)

A quick Google and the possibilities are:

Driver issue
Intel G3258 issue
BIOS issue?
SSD issue?

PC specs:

Gigabyte B85-3DH
Intel G3258
Samsung 840 Evo 120GB
Windows 7 HP full retail

If anyone has had a similar issue and got tips on trying to narrow down the issue in this case that would be great. Bless 'em the 'rents get all panicked when things go pair shaped and I'll want to get this sorted ASAP.

USB devices?

Say, would turning off Windows Update via Administrative Tools work?

Just go to computer management > services > windows update > properties > general > startup = disabled > ok > restart computer

to enable just set startup to automatic and restart.

not sure but maybe windows defender will re-enable.. but i have no clue since defender is disabled on my machine permanently

USB devices?

As in stuff connected to the PC? I know I unplugged the printer but can't remember if anything else other than mouse/keyboard were connected.

I didn't check for issues in device manager so could it be if there are exclamation marks I need to disable or update any issues there and try again?

Remove everything except the mouse and keyboard and see what it does.

Thanks.

But I'm thinking of going back to W8. My internet settings are completely gone and when i hit the settings for my network card it's just a blank page. I have no idea what to do right now... Plus, my PC (laptop) doesn't have a ethernet port, so i can't plug it in to my router.

Thanks.

Computer model and/or wifi card model?

I've had no issues with W10, but one of my mates is.

She has an Hp 15-r110na laptop. Upgraded from Windows 8.

The system is absolutely fine...until she plugs in the power. Then the screen goes black. No backlight. Unplug and it comes back on.

Also, max brightness is dimmer than it was before.

I have no fucking clue why this is happening. Help?

Thanks.

Any conflicts in device manager?

I would have her boot into bios and see if it happens without Windows running. If it doesn't, I would have her boot into safe mode and try it to see if it happens in safe mode.

Lenovo Yoga 2. No clue what the card model is. I searched around for a bit and found "WAN miniport" in the unit manager. Sorry, i don't have English as the default language on my pc so I'm trying my best to translate what the files, boxes etc read.

EDIT: "unit manager" is device manager i suppose

Doesnt happen in the BIOS. Had to explain it as the "loading thingy before the windows thingy". Safe mode is gonna be fun.

Thank you for the suggestion, but it doesn't seem to have changed this behavior.

My store button doesn't work. If I press it a window opens but it's just white and nothing happens. Has this been answered in this thread?

Any idea why none of my pinned folders will open when I right click my start bar pinned File Explorer and choose them?

Only ones that open are This PC and Quick Access

Do you have Airdroid installed?

I had the same problem as well as not being able to use the context menu that appears by right clicking the start button and uninstalling airdroid fixed it.

Yup, "System" process on my SP3 is once again causing trouble. This happened on Insider builds and I'm really disappoiinted it carried over to RTM.

My "System" is currently using 800+ MB of RAM.

I have two hard drives hooked up to the motherboard. One is brand new and the other is on the fritz, but that one has windows 10 on it. Any way I can move all my stuff into the new hard drive?

OK the entire bar at the bottom of the screen is now useless. The windows button is useless, I can't right click on anything and the search bar is fucked. Not only that but the windows store button has disappeared and so has Microsoft edge.

On the bright side, it sounds like Windows is uninstalling itself.

Only issue I have right now is that the Edge and Windows Store icons aren't showing in the taskbar, there's a blank space and I can click it but the icon itself is missing. Any fixes out there?

Anybody else have trouble with iCloud and Windows 10? Basically W10 installed fine but when I booted up later I got this flashing desktop and a message concerning iCloud (can't remember the details). At the time I didn't know the cause so I did a complete re-start of my PC (so it's like new - it's only 2 weeks old anyway) which did mean I'd lose some "apps" etc. Anyway got it restarted and all was fine.
But when I looked for a cause I found that the iCloud was a problem if it's set to run on start up. So I've got rid of that for now.

Also, is there an easier way to stop having to put a password in everytime? I could'nt find an option for it anywhere so I used a Run command "netplwiz" and followed the options.

I'd honestly go back and try again if it's that bad. Easier than figuring out what's going on.

Welp, I fixed it. Microsoft Edge and the App store are still gone, it looks like they only hang around a limited time and that's what caused my issues. A system restore brought be back and fixed the start menu and everything else. From what I can tell when Edge and the App store left if caused a bug that fucked with everything else on the bar.
