Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

I'm not feeling this game graphically during the day, everything just looks flat?

On another note has their been any indications about how long this game is? Will preorder if it's at least 8 missions like the main one in GZ, but I need to make sure before I do.
a french previewer played 30+.

Has anyone else noticed just how different Ocelot sounds compared to E3 2013?

"Now go...let the legend come back to liiifeee!" That kind of trailing gruff delivery of the old voice actor was adopted by Baker in a muted sort of way.

Now he's kinda southern US sounding. I wonder if they made a conscious choice to break away from the old Ocelot sound at some point and ended up re-recording.

Yeah, I really don't like it.

He is very inconsistent and suddenly has a very southern accent that really does not fit Ocelot.

I am pretty green to this new Metal Gear, haven't really been following it, but just watched this demo video, and am intrigued.

Just how much of the game is (seemingly) F2P style busy work?, seems to be a lot of it in the video?

its a small and fairly isolated part of the game, this video was just focusing on that particular area.

Yup, didn't take us long to forget about the whole microtransaction fiasco
They'll probably add extra couple of hours to everything non-paid
luckily the
mods will fix it on PC

the potential for scummyness is certainly there, but we really have to wait till we know more specifics before we should call bullshit or not.

I wonder if the timers for SP motherbase will be tied to the system clock, which can be changed at will.

Yeah I feel like I'll play the game normally until I hit the point where the economy starts to annoy me and then I'll just cheat engine myself 10 million GMP

Don't you think the game will be listed on VAC ban games?
FOB is a multiplayer part besides MGO, right? Multiplayer means competitive, competitive games tend to be listed on VAC.

I agree with you actually, but it's weird that they gave that doctor Kiefer's voice and never showed his face.
I'm not into these MGS conspiracies tbh, but that *is* a weird thing they did in GZ, since they go out of their way to cover his face, for no apparent reason, and deliberately gave him an important voice actor, when they could've asked anyone else doing "additional voices" to say his lines.

I'm sure they didn't show his face, not because they wanted you to be surprised in the event Ishmael takes his bandages off, but because they wanted you to forget about him.

They needed a medic for the bomb removal scene (someone to stitch Paz up), so seeing as Mother Base has no resident medic (like they have a resident scientist in Huey) they had to make it a random person. And it was probably just more convenient to have Kiefer read the lines than to cast someone else.

If Akio Ōtsuka also voice the medic there might be grounds for a theory, but I haven't heard that point being made, so it probably isn't the case.

Sounds more or less the same to me, given that he's shouting in one of them and using a conversational tone in the other.

I wondered if it's to do with making the voices sound more identifiable over radio because him and Miller can sound pretty similar at times.
And this... I have a hard time telling them apart sometimes, especially over the radio. Not a particularly good casting/recording job on Kojima's part. Cutscenes are one thing, but when you can't see who's talking, like over the radio, it's even more important for all the characters to have distinct voices that you can easily tell apart.

The other question I have about Miller and Ocelot on the radio is do they have specific areas of knowledge? Does Miller just talk about the mission specifics like objectives and targets, while Ocelot focuses on something else, like intel since we've seen him torturing people? Do they both talk about the same things with overlap? Is Huey ever a radio contact? I liked the old codec system where each contact had a specific area of expertise.

it says "No additional purchases need to be made to complete or build anything in the game" so lets hope that means we can earn it

Yeah, I hope there's nothing too scummy...to me it's just worrying they haven't outlined this system. But I guess they don't want any negative news before release..

I adored the old Codec system, but unfortunately I think it's gone forever in favour of Miller and Ocelot just chiming in at scripted points during gameplay. Every time you replay the mission. "In country they were known as Glaz and Palitz: the Eye and the Finger".

It seems like some missions will have briefing tapes you can listen to on your iDroid as you play, but the old days of capturing a new animal and calling Para Medic to hear how it tastes, or bro-ing out with Sigint about the sweet new gun you just found, are all over. The fact that MGSV's weapons are all fictional doesn't really help, either.

Sorry if asked before, but is playing 4 a requirement for this game? I've done every game besides 4 and peacewalker which I'm getting through for this.

I'm sure there will be some connections, so you really should just because it's a big part of the series. But Peacewalker does seem to more pertinent. No, I wouldn't say its a requirement. Just recommended.

yeah. might be too much for me :(

Not sure how this is an issue :P. I think about it in terms of bang for your buck. There are very few games that ever make me feel that I'm getting a good value out of the $60 price tag. Witcher 3 was the latest one for me and MGSV looks to top that in terms of content. For people who think it's overwhelming, just play that game at a slower pace maybe? Take time to appreciate some of its complexities and decide what you want or don't want to invest time in.

Yeah, can't say I'm happy that the traditional codec is gone. Those conversations are one of the things I look forward to in MGS.

Personally I'd highly recommend going through 4 and especially Peace Walker. There are concepts and plot points introduced in 4 that get referenced to in MGSV.

I don't really care if I get VAC banned for cheating in the SP portion of the game if it means I don't have to put up with shitty MT inspired arbitrary waiting mechanics or economy issues.

the conversations are still there, just you'll usually find them in the tapes instead

Not really. The fun codecs tend to be context sensitive and interactive, like Russian glowcaps in mgs3 or the ravens in mgs1 for example. You don't get that with tapes.

You're very salty for something you have next to no information about.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the tapes. Miller will have a ton of them seeing how much time Robin Atkin Downes spent in the studio. Tapes and radio convos are good and all but I prefer seeing the characters actually interact with each other in cut scenes. Can't wait to see conflict on the battlefield and on Mother Base.

Yeah, the best Codecs over the years have all been context sensitive. You find a cool new item, equip it, call the right person and hear a neat little conversation about Snake's sweet custom M1911, or how he should use the sticky sap from a certain plant to form a hardened cast around his broken bone. Or the running jokes that BB is scared of vampires, or Otacon's rubbish at reading proverbs. Not to mention all the tips and tricks you used to be able to get during bossfights.

You really can't do any of that with pre-recorded briefing tapes, or quick little one-liners over the radio. You lose a lot when Big Boss can't initiate the call and get involved in the conversation, y'know?

to my recollection there is still context sensitive stuff using the radio function in peace walker. looks to be the same in tpp.

Ground Zeroes changed that to the 'Intel Radio' button. You zoomed in on something with the scope, pressed L1 and Miller would give you a totally dry line or two about it. "Boss, that's an AA gun. You could blow it up with some C4". I did it like five times on my first GZ playthrough and then never bothered again. MGSV seems to be the same, unless they've added a Radio menu in the iDroid that I haven't spotted.

Does anyone know if they've said whether or not appropriate camo for the terrain/environment is a factor for detection? Wondering if the camo index % is there under the hood or not. The jet black sneaking suit in the desert tells me no.

Outfits do have a factor for detection depending on the terrain, but there's no camo index to rely on.

Refresh my memory, Miller here is the same Miller that's killed off screen in MGS1, right? It's not some asinine thing where it's his dad but looks exactly like him like with Huey?
