Rise of the Tomb Raider Syria Demo

We have seen gameplay of Lara in stealth gameplay, shooting etc

What Uncharted and Tomb Raider both does is very linear, scripted, QTE, platforms breaking, barely grabbing the ledge etc Its been done for years. Honestly if youre to criticize Tomb Raider for it, then youre doing the same to Uncharted because it does every one of those things excessively.

Theyre cinimatic action oriented games with gunplay and platforming thrown in

Uncharted tends to keep a lot of cinematic stuff as actual gameplay still. TR2013 would cut to pure cutscene for a lot of things Uncharted wouldn't have. Uncharted has a fun vibe to it also, like Indiana Jones movies, while the new TR does this gritty and real attempt that fails because it isn't realistic at all and is trying to be Uncharted. Also Uncharted got rid of the QTEs after the first game as far as I can recall.

It really changes the enjoyment of the games when got a fun mood that doesn't pull you in and out of gameplay as a often.

Likely makes me sound like a UC fanboy, well I do love UC, but I love TR too and I'll call out either for the things they do wrong.

You are right, but it doesn't looks as good in Uncharted. Uncharted 4 looks pretty amazing, but the lighting, modleing, and shaders look so good in Tomb Raider. Even Lara's skin during gameplay looks much more lifelike. There is something about the weight of her clothing and the shaders that make her actually look wet instead of it being just a graphical effect.

I love that Crystal Dynamics is competing toe to toe with my favorite developer of all time. It is about time. It will just make both games better.
I know that this isn't what's being discussed here but as impressive as the new Tomb Raider video and the Uncharted Jeep video have been, the video above has impressed me far more than either of them.

I love what they're done with play area and the new ways of getting around them and having a choice in how you approach and take on the enemies. As impressed as I was the Jeep video and I really did enjoy that, this video sold the game to me far more than that did.

It's not as if I needed to be persuaded to buy the game as Uncharted is one of my favourite series of games but I was more surprised wit the changes in this than what I saw in the Jeep...which I also loved.

Dialogue is still rather meh, but I really like the setting shown here. Graphics look also great.

Except in regards to animation, where sadly they're so very far behind.
They really need to upgrade those. While some are good, Lara kicking in that brick wall looked just so stiff.

Really? I think visually its pretty mediocre. Shoddy texture work and bad animation.

You can't be serious. This game isn't competing with the Witcher when it comes to visuals let alone UC4.

Very much agreed, I was really worried about U4 being more of the same but that video showed me that Naughty Dog was on the right track and thinking bigger.

The biggest problem with the new TR is that it feels like it isn't trying anything new at all.

Turn that shit up. Your neighbors will just think you are having some kinky sex.

"Yeah I'm getting closer.
moan'..
.just a bit more 'moan'

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" (man gets stabbed in the neck )

Neighbors will be so confused as to be jealous or to call the cops

Yes, let's go back to this:

tomb_raider.PC-3.jpg

this is so much better and really puts the nail in the coffin that the new tomb raider is laughable.

Tomb+Raider+III+5.jpg

THIS puzzle looks really hard though... damn son, are those steps?

tomb_raider3_screenshots_08.jpg

Actually yes. Lets go back to (elements of) that. It actually required some degree of thinking and experimentation. Not every ledge needs white paint (and who put it there). This demo may not have shown anything like it, so who knows?

Really? I think visually its pretty mediocre. Shoddy texture work and bad animation.

Mediocre is pushing it, it definitely has its flaws (1080p on Xbox One comes at an hefty price) but overall I'd say this looks very good. The lighting is nice, Lara's model is very detailed, the environment looks somewhat restricted (cross-gen limitation most likely), texture work is hit and miss but it's hard to think of a game where this is not the case.

I would not say it looks as good as Uncharted, it can't be considering the Xbox One is weaker (unless they drop the res to 900p) but it's a damn fine looking game.

I'm eager to see what they'll improve for the PC version.

lol no it doesnt make you sound like a UC fanboy lol Just means you have a preference. As i said in a previous post, Uncharted is a more lighthearted game where as Tomb Raider is a darker game. Depends on what you prefer out of the two really. Other than that, theyre very identical in many ways and also different in other ways. Both amazing though. Im looking forward to both.

This game looks absolutely amazing. Will definitely be picking this up next november

I agree with all of this. Watching it again, it clearly looks more impressive than the last tomb raider. Just because something might not look overall as impressive as another game, doesn't mean it doesn't look great. Very impressed with the visuals here overall. To me this looks better than Ryse. It is cool that quite a few games on the Xbone are now surpassing that game.

Looks great and hope it plays great. Love the "tomb" in the game but main concern is - are the 15 tombs part of the main storyline/campaign or are they option side quests? If anyone knows for sure either way, let me know. Thanks.

Looking pretty good to me. Her hair in the car was kind of funny.

I'm sure most people will chalk it up to who cares about narrative with these games but adventurer versus PMCs/mercenaries as conflict is kind of stale.

I would not rank it above Ryse but I'm cognizant those games are not asking the same thing from the hardware. Tomb Raider is more open and seems to rely more on physics in some parts, this must not be cheap to render.
My point was that every game can be nitpicked, the overall presentation of this new Tomb Raider is very solid in my opinion. That does not mean you can't easily notice inconsistencies and imperfections, screenshots definitely show varying texture quality, blocky geometry here and here.
Contrary to what CD are claiming the game has a cross-gen look to it, it's undeniable the 360 had to be taken into account and the game is not solely developped with the Xbox One in mind.

Uncharted 4 should not have issues surpassing this in the graphics department. No PS3 to worry about and stronger hardware at their disposal.

Needs more gravity. She looks a bit like she's in a L'oreal spot

And less of it at the same time. I find it weird how the hair has all these strand physics, but it still remains little more than a skull cap with a few loose threads. When she is getting out of the crashed jeep, you can see the loose hair (or what should be) above her face completely defying gravity, glued to the side of her head.

If they're going for floaty hair they might as well go the Alice route.

Frankly I think it looks excellent taking into account we are not talking about high-end hardware. Hair physics is not a solved problem and won't be for quite some time, Hairworks and TressFX in TR2013 don't look or behave quite as you'd expect, there are practical considerations to be accounted for.

Yet Alice: The Madness Returns is still the most logically consistent implementation. It was too floaty, but at least it behaves physically in all situations. Surely it should be possible to move on from that.

I appreciate the technology, but I find it really jarring when it looks good one moment and the next it completely breaks the illusion.

I love how games and movies always make it look like it's a big challenge for helicopter gunships to kill people in cars.

Can imagine that half the comments 'criticising' this demo in some way wouldn't be posted on here if this was coming out on the PS4 on the same date as XB1!!

Alice's hair does not behave plausibly at all, it seems to have no mass whatsoever, the look/shading of the hair is not anywhere near TressFX. There are plenty of times when Alice's hair looks wrong, could nostalgia be clouding your judgment ? I liked the game but it's hair will not go down as a meaningful step towards plausible hair rendering/behavior.

TressFX arguably will, and I'm pleased to see it in Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Essentially you're accusing some of pushing agendas ? Maybe you're right, but on the other had there are valid negative points you can bring up.

I really liked tomb raider 2013 tbh.

Idk about this though, there's too much of the AWFUL climing along walls (AC/uncharted style), tomb raider actually didn't have that much of that you could mostly freely jump around.

Other than that there isn't much to tell, too much of it was (barely interactive) cutscene.

I agree. Alice's hair isn't plausible. However, if you turn her upside down her hair will hang. Neither here nor in TR2013 does that happen except for larger masses like the ponytail. It isn't nostalgia, I did a quick search, found the first clip to illustrate my point.

Just look at the jeep section in that clip and tell me whether or not that hair should be hanging. It is better for a consistent solution than one that wavers between good and terrible. By this metric Lara's hair is just as implausible.

Looks great. I really enjoyed TR 2013 a lot, and this seems like the perfect palette cleanser after The Witcher 3, MGSV and Fallout 4.

It'll be nice to just enjoy a linear action game after all the open world stuff.

I've watched it again now and I definitely think there is something wrong with some of the animations or more precisely, it doesn't look comfortable sometimes when an animation is happening and then it has to another animation. It just looks quite awkward at times.

I had been of the opinion that Microsoft's was going to be a positive thing as it would benefit from having their input so that Crystal Dynamics would be able to push the game further than if it was a proper third party game. although it would take longer, it would also benefit people down the line who were playing it on the PS4 or PC.

I'm not sure how much influence Microsoft have had over the game but I'm not sure that I think that any more. One of the issues that I had with the first game was that I didn't think that Crystal Dynamics quite knew where they were taking the game at that point and I'm still feeling that with this in that they have ideas where they want to take it but they don;t quite have the ability or the belief to do it.

I just get the feeling that if Microsoft at some point hadn't tried to convince them that they wanted something to compete directly with Uncharted that we could have ended up with something a lot more interesting looking than we have now.

Of course, that's pure conjecture as that conversation may never have happened and what we see here could purely be down to their own vision of the game. wither way, I would really prefer there was nothing of Uncharted in this game and it was something that stood on it's own merits.

I still think Alice: Madness Return's had spectacular hair.

Maybe, but I have an Xbox One, but I was a Tomb Raider fan before Xbox even existed. There's plenty to criticize and plenty that isn't remotely like the classic games. It's still good, but it doesn't always scratch the right itch.

God damn that look beautiful, seems like the first, tightly controlled cinematic scenarios mixed with open areas of gameplay. That looked magnificent.

Are you serious?

I really don't see anything resembling Uncharted to a point where we could consider it copying. Oh wait, they both climb? Is that it? Or they both go to exotic places to find a hidden lost treasure? Yeah, that might be it.
