Rise of the Tomb Raider Syria Demo

Says who exactly? The game looks great. If I can get those visuals at 1080p with a steady 30fps then I find that impressive.

Not every game is Uncharted ffs.

The game doesn't in anyway look bad. I think it looks great but I also don't think its close to being a top tier contender.

You guys are actually impressed by this? Seriously? The water looks bad, the physics look wonky it just looks old. Objects clipping all over the place.

It isn't in the top 10. No way man. I'm sorry but I feel like you guys haven't been keeping up it doesn't look better than WC3

Ryse is amazing looking, one of the best. TR isn't even close to Ryse.
What will seeing more of the game prove? Will the animations and bad textures suddenly be fixed.
WC3?

It might not be in the top 10 but it's pretty close imo.

I'm sure that Uncharted 4 surpasses Rise of the Tomb Raider with regards to techniques used, and with considering other technical specifics.

But Tomb Raider, at least to me, looks less game-y. Maybe it's the lighting. Maybe it's the skin/material shaders. Perhaps it's just having a more muted, natural colour palette. But it really has this solid look to it that I prefer to anything I've seen of Uncharted 4. Yes, Nathan Drake's chest hairs might rustle, but pure aesthetics have me leaning towards Tomb Raider, based on what we've seen. Tomb Raider also seems to have an eye for cinematography that hasn't been showcased in Uncharted 4's gameplay yet (but, given Uncharted 2 pulling of similar moments, I'm sure we'll see that eventually).

I don't recall the water in Uncharted 4 being anything to write home about.

I think it looks great visually, but that's pretty much the only thing I enjoyed about this video.

The cutscene is something that's been seen a thousand times, directing is really meh, and it's over-the-top.

From the sound of it it seems the writing will be as crappy as the reboot, which is why I think this franchise could really benefit from taking itself a little less seriously.

I also loved the first one, I'm pretty excited for this one (though gameplay wise the latest demo wasn't amazing but I trust CD), have to probably wait for more than a year though :/

Yeah, well, it is basically Tomb Raider 2013-2 in the gameplay department. There is nothing really new. I mean, now you can climb trees and throw bottles... but essentially, it is the same game. Which is not a bad thing, but at the same time it is kind of disappointing that they are not evolving their game design.

I will have to wait too :/

graphics look nice to me. the iq is pretty dam clean, . of course thats cause your in a
just like some parts of the last game and hopefully that slide isnt completely canned, i love sliding in games, shoutouts to mario 64 and warframe.

I don't know what is happening in this thread , but so many are getting serious salty.
Now about the Syria demo.
The beginning was pretty bad with some bad animation and was overall not so impressive (the scene with the car). The hair looks sometimes off but is also one of the hardest things to get right in computer graphics.
But then everything started to get a lot better.
Ok the gameplay doesn't look like it is going to set the world on fire, but that is about to be expected (Uncharted doesn't look any better in that department) in this genre.
There were parts where the atmosphere feels just like Indiana Jones and these games have a lot riding on atmosphere and pace so that's very nice to see.
Then the graphics.
The beginning wasn't really good but as it went on there were parts where it looks better then Uncharted , and that was surprising.
The lighting engine and some of the shaders also look excellent (they can Certainly rival Uncharted in this department).
So everything is looking good , I just hope they keep the interface and help in the gameplay (hope I can switch off those hints) as uncluttered as possible to keep the atmosphere as high as possible, this can also help in the adventure part.

A bit heavy on the bloom and the AA isn't spectacular... But I now have an Xbox One in addition to my PS4, so I'm looking forward to it. Still would rather play it on my PC or PS4. But no way am I waiting 6 months + to play it.

"And to the left, you will see some falling rocks highlighted with some expertly crafted massive explosions. And if you look ahead to the right, you can start getting a glimpse of the next attraction consisting of a water slide with spikes on the side of the wall that just barely touch you!

Oh wait, you haven't pressed A yet to pass the previous attraction. So the ride has to come to a hault until you pass the button requirement needed to show that you've properly taken in the previous attraction.

Ok, you pressed the button? Great! Let us continue the Tomb Raider Experience Ride!"

The first Uncharted 4 demo has water in its caves, and we'll need a .gif comparison of the sinking ship in Uncharted 3 to be so bold about that second claim.

As for Uncharted 4 I'm not seeing where this 'better' comes from. Seems quite comparable, particularly in the cave.

Yup so comparable. Are you serious!? I think your getting tied up in your argument that you love how natural TR looks with its intense bloom lighting in a cave whereas in UC4 Drake looks like a guy in a cave. As soon as he emerges the difference is staggering. High res textures everywhere, amazing character models and animations.

Compare this:

To any of the opening shots of TR. That to me is massive

You guys are actually impressed by this? Seriously? The water looks bad, the physics look wonky it just looks old. Objects clipping all over the place.

Looks super solid to me. I'm impressed for it being crossgen, working off the old game engine and pulling off convincing and satisfying results. It's not cutting edge technical wizardry but the overall art and presentation in the game is top notch. Even the DE version of TR '13 has little I'd personally ever call 'bad' and this is obviously an improvement.

Tomb Raider looks great, but Uncharted 4 looks beyond great. Just my opinion, I'll be getting both.

Uncharted4punchup.gif

What? I think you're missing the point of that .gif. There's nothing impressive about the water. Certainly nothing more impressive than Tomb Raider has demonstrated.

The point of that .gif, or at least its extended version, is the fact that the water interacts with Drake's hair and makes it heavy. But I don't think anyone was fawning over the water itself. And water also makes Lara's hair heavier in this demo.

Can't we just chalk it up to a difference of opinion instead of being condescending about it

As a cross gen title they did an amazing job.

All the debris falling is just clipping through the ground and the water has no effect on the environment whatsoever but sure we can make it an opinion thing.

I'm not using that gif for the water I'm using it as an example of how much better looking in every way UC4 looks. You know high res models compared to low res ones, high res textures next to low res ones, expansive environment compared to closed in cave.

Will admit the level of serendipity in that gameplay, plus the over simplification of puzzles etc does have me worried.

Lol, there are some mighty delusional people in this thread that seem to just want to pick a fight. The game looks great, uncharted looks great. What the hell everyone bitching about? Jesus, the thread isn't titled "Tomb Raider vs UC4 current builds."

Wasn't there a recent thread like this that was closed because of bickering like this? Besides some wonky hair animations the game looks good. Move on.

this thread will be closed soon as well. People cant help themselves.

Honestly, I envy the people who can fight these battles to begin with.

My eyes glaze over so fast when seeing so many comparison gifs of fucking MUD and WATER again and again.

Why would you do that?

You said the water looked bad in Rise of the Tomb Raider. I gave you a link to a section of Uncharted 4 gameplay in a comparable environment that had a similar graphical quality to its rushing water. That's the point we were arguing.

If you want to assert that the water in Uncharted 4 looks better choose a section of Uncharted 4 for comparison. The section I found, at least to me, doesn't have water that looks any better (certainly not significantly better).

It doesn't matter anyway, as I'm sure we'll still end up disagreeing, so I'll concede that all opinions are correct.

Why do you keep comparing it to the old demo, the latest U4 demo just blows TR out of the water, seriously dude, it looks much better, and it's much more impressive with its scale and physics.

Both games look amazing. For me, Tomb Raider definitely has much more realistic lighting. Uncharted 4 looks cartoony and lit by only ambient light. I love the way that shadows are cast in Tomb Raider. It might be the time of day and what not, but I really feel what makes Tomb Raider so good is how the lighting is used to create atmosphere during the game play and not just the cutscenes. I want as much effort put into lighting the game as the cutscenes.

tombraider_lighting2.jpg

The lighting in this Tomb Raider demo was like the lighting in the first Uncharted 4 demo with Drake on the beach. It's very atmospheric. You can feel the sun hit Lara's skin making it glow.

tombraider_lighting.jpg

Water looks bad in both U4 and TR, hopefully they're polished up in both before release. I have a feeling they're placeholder anyway.

ROTR visuals definitely aren't up there with the best of the gen, but it definitely looks great regardless. It looks inline with the Definitive Edition, though better. Character model is a lot better.

Animations are hit and miss, just like in Definitive Edition. But it looks like it's going to be a fun ride, just as DE was. Looking forward to playing this in a year.

That's not an opinion though. The game does sometime look astonishingly bad for current gen.

Here you can spot a very low res sun shadow with such a bad filtering that it has almost no temporal stability which makes it flicker and alias in the compressed 720p video:

rottr_briefing_theate6xp3u.jpg

This isn't even a POM on that pillar let alone a true displacement mapping with tesselation. This is truly below PS360 level graphically:

rottr_briefing_theatebcpc8.jpg

This spider web is a low resolution badly animated by a script texture instead of something more compute heavy - I'm guessing all the Xbox One's compute budget went into Lara's hair:

rottr_briefing_theateerorc.jpg

This shot's environment textures are looking worse than in UC1 on PS3:

rottr_briefing_theateutq73.jpg

Etc.

I will buy the game day one as I love these adventure type games but it's really bad graphically sometimes and in no way is it even close to what ND's already accomplished in UC4 renderer.

Game looks awesome, pretty comparable to Uncharted 4 graphic wise, but hopefully it will have more open areas and puzzle than Uncharted 4. Can't wait to play it this November

I think the water in Uncharted 4 looks amazing.

From the old demo: (can't find that one with Drake looking at the waterfalls, if someone has it, please post it)

I really dig ROTTR water too! Especially during the cutscene at the end (although I don't think that is the in game water). But it is great nonetheless.

Looks awesome to me *shrug*

This video is actually the first time that I've been interested in this game.

Wow massive improvement over the last clip l saw. Fabulous lighting and environment detail. Kinda has that uncharted vibe. Looking forward to seeing more of the game mechanics.

I thought it looked pretty impressive until I downloaded the HQ file. That video revealed jaggies, massive amounts of shimmering, flickering shadows, low res textures, and pretty low poly geometry throughout. These are mostly prominent upon close-ups in the initial cut-scene. Everything looks a bit better when camera pans back for gameplay.

I do understand how some people may put this over Uncharted though. The overall look is a bit more "contrasty" and has more pop. The Uncharted 4 footage seen so far goes for more pastel-like colors. In terms of light/shadow contrast (not anything else though) Tomb Raider is more comparable to initial Uncharted 4 reveal. I hope we get some Uncharted gameplay footage under the same lighting conditions so that we can compare the two more accurately.

Every tomb raider thread, we have to have people chime in with how uncharted is on another level (lol its not). Can yall stop? Its tired and this thread is off topic now.

and.....Case closed.

I said this before, but I'm not even referring to either game's graphic capabilities. Read what I said again. I'm simply talking about how people can be elitist jackasses when it comes to this shit.

Case closed? Probably not. But whatev.

I love how the moment where she walks the side of the cliff at the beginning and trips on something and leans on some rocks is almost exactly the same as a moment way too similar to that in the first game of the reboot.

EDIT: Maybe not as similar as I thought. It's kind of done the same way.

Holy smokes that looks great, the only concern I had with the first one was at time I had no idea where to go, did anyone else find this happening to them?

Ugh, you know I wish this wasn't console exclusive for a while if for no other reason than to prevent bitchfest console war posts like this thread seems to be riddled with.

This game looks fantastic. It's out this fall on xbox one. Have a good PC too ? then play it there and it will look even better about 6 months later , have a PS4 ? well you'll get to play the equally amazing looking Uncharted 4 next spring and can have a go through of this title (which will still look quite good) in time for next christmas.

Don't want to wait ? then go buy an xbone. It's not really rocket science. Can't buy an xbone ? well that's not really a reason to complain.

This basically looks as good as the Definitive edition of the first entry did with just a little bit more pizzazz even. Makes sense, it's probably the same engine but now it's rendering environments other than "stormy tropical island" although the first one did have that wonderful radio tower sequence with some snow and such.

I loved the last game and I bought an xbox one for KI last year so I'll probably pick it up and play through it. This demo just helped nudge me towards that purchase.
