A graphics breakthrough makes perfect CGI skin.

Am I the only one who finds the title somewhat alarmist? I'm not denying the tech isn't making progress but it does not look perfect or real to me.

I was even discussing to myself today the idea of when will photorealistic humans become possible and I think we're still years awaaaay.

CG to me has yet to even touch the "almost real" mannequins in stop moton films.

We're not completely there, but we're certainly close.

The funny thing was, I actually thought the eyes looked decent and not dead.

I don't think they move (much?) and I didn't notice the pupils adjusting, but of course the skin is the focus.

Indeed, the skin is the focus. This isn't an eye-tech demo.

I thought that they just cut his head from another video and looped it, didn't know it was fully CGI, it did look a little awkward though, the smile looked a bit forced.

Nope. Body is his brothers, but the head/face is fully CGI. If we can get to this sort of level in actual games this gen, I think we'll have made great progress.

That was really cool. Great for movies and CGI cut scenes at least. A bit overkill for gameplay. Never really that close to a face. Unless you are playing Dentist Simulator 2015 or something.

How computationally expensive is this? Looks like a pretty clever solution to just blur and sharpen the texture. Hope we see it in games soon (although I wouldn't hold my breath considering we're only just now seeing decent hair).

This looks amazing. Does anybody know if this is the same graphical technique to what the Euphoria Engine does in Red Dead Redemption, where it made the muscles animate realistically in the horses as they ran?

To me, this is one of the most exciting advances in games. It's an enormous leap in realism when you look at visuals with tech like this compared to something without it.

Wrestling games are a good example of why we need this. One of the ugliest and "video gamey" examples of old graphics is seeing a muscular character whose bicep looks like it's permanently flexed, even when their arm is straightened; it looks so bad.

I hate this in every game. The stiff look on things that should be fluid and move hurts me more than anything else. When games go out of their way animate wrinkles in clothing (uncharted/gtav) or flexing muscles (fight night) it is immediately more impressive than something that remains stiff even if it has higher fidelity.

Improving more subtle things like this helps but It's still going to look bad if the overall animation is not perfect. That's the biggest problem to solve with current cgi and makes even the best renders look fake as hell.

That's not the word I'd use.

Looks fantastic, just need the right amount of animation to make it look less lifeless. Imagine Naughty Dog using this. Uncharted 4 is already proving to have some perfect animations at a cgi-like level. Boy tech is cool.

Look like she just roasted the shit out of someone lol

Also this is what I was thinking.

This doesn't have anything to do with games specifically. I think its possibly too expensive at the moment for realtime calculations.

Yeah, most impressive part by far. I'm on board for anything that will surpass Avatar so we can stop referencing that piece of shit.

You gonna be mad salty when Avatar 2 uses tech like this and will be the new tech bar for years to come
