DOCTARRR!!!

great, I'm only up to Voyage of the Damned, I don't know if I get power through Seasons 4-8 between now and Sept 19!

It can be done!

I watched 1-7 of NuWho in 3 months, I think.

I think there are some clips from the new series in there as well.

Yeah you can see Clara in the Dalek room briefly on one of the screens. So basically they're getting people to make a prequel? Which is neat. Good way to foster fan creations among the kiddies.

Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and Karen Gillan are going to be in Toronto for Fan Expo in September and they're doing a panel. The only tickets left are the expensive premium ones. I'm tempted to buy it.

No filming about, but my sister and I had lunch in Eddie's to make up for it.

The Experience is better than it was, although having Smith's old TARDIS in there still is a bit jarring.

New DWM cover is so damn good:
Damn. That is a good cover. It's too bad how I'm constantly enraged by Doctor Who's unwillingness to kill off anyone ever. As much as I hated
The Master coming back, it drives me more crazy they waste time trying to pretend she died....again.

Not sure if things need spoiler-tagged, but what the hell. We have new people in here watching through.

They basically didn't pretend. Moffat was saying in the Behind-the-Scenes video released alongside Death In Heaven that it was inevitable that she'd be back soon, and Gomez straight-up announced it in DWM the next month.

Looks like Hayley Atwell's answer to an twitter question is enough to make entertainment press news for the day. Not that the threshhold for such a thing is very high when it comes to the enthusiast press, but...

People seem
pretty excited
by the idea of
Hayley Atwell as
Doctor Who

I dunno, as good as Hayley is, I don't feel like it's a horrible belief to hold that The Doctor should always be male, even if the canon allows it to be otherwise. Outside of Sue Perkins, I doubt I could get away from the feeling that a female Doctor would be off, regardless of how good a job they'd do.

I dunno, horses for courses I guess. I'm sure Hayley would do a great job if she did, provided Moffat isn't writing her.

I don't think Moffat will cast a woman (and I almost feel he did the Master thing to throw a bone/offset that fact, though it's turned out magnificently) and if Gatiss succeeds him he almost certainly won't, so I don't think it'll happen any time soon. The door is more open than ever though in the wake of the Missy thing...

I bet Whithouse would.

A few things have come out from Blogtor's set reports. Notably, episodes 7 and 8 are called Invasion of the Zygons/ Inversion of the Zygons, and episode 11 is a one-hander for Capaldi- he's the only actor in it. How exciting is that? What a showcase for Capaldi that's going to be.

This is my favourite use of words in Doctor Who ever. :)

Oh shoot. I'm not opposed to the Doctor being a lady as long as the casting is good enough. But this idea brings up a whole new dimension of the debate that I had not before considered very seriously.

Do I really want to be that attracted to the Doctor? I mean, Hayley Atwell. Oh my god I'd be so distracted. Someone would ask me what the Doctor has been up to this season and my reply would be, "Doctor who?"

I'm into the Doctor being this conventionally very beautiful person, and having no idea how to handle how the world reacts to that.

Yeah that's one way they could do it, a similar idea worked very well for 11. But it might be fun to go the opposite direction. They could have the Doctor be completely confident in her good looks and yet not give a single shit, being clearly the smartest person in the room and embarrassing people who only see the pretty face.

The Daily Star reckons that Mark Gatiss's episode will be found footage in nature.

This series sounds very experimental by Doctor Who standards, and I'm all over it.

Oh wow. Really looking forward to that one-man show!

Potential episode 11 spoilers:

Wasn't there some theory/rumour going around that there would be multiple versions of the Doctor? So it wouldn't necessarily be a big monologue so much as Capaldi acting off of himself. Which explains why everyone keeps saying its one of the toughest episodes to shoot.

And found footage sounds very neat. I love episodes where they invert the formulae and look and everything from the 'people's' perspective rather than the Doctor/Clara's. Maybe even security cam style? That'd be cool.

I mean in the episode itself. I'm glad outside the show they aren't keeping it hidden at all, but in the episode itself I was like.....come on. Why didn't they just let her run away so we can stop this silliness?

From Blogtor:

"Peter is asked about the "new" UNIT family that seems to have been established once more with Kate Stewart and Osgood.
"It’s lovely having them all, it’s great. We even had ‘
Five Rounds Rapid
’ the other day!""

Hope that means it's in the script.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with the Capaldi only episode. I really enjoyed Flatline last year that had Clara being the Doctor, this seems like another interesting twist.

Has this been posted yet? Moffat gave some short comments/hints about each story in the upcoming series in SFX Magazine. Nothing too revealing in here, but I'll spoiler it just in case.

Ep 1/2: "This is the opening two-parter. It features lots of Daleks and this time we mean it! Clara receives a mysterious summon and has to team up with Missy to search for the Doctor in a very, very old place."
Ep 3/4: "This two-parter is written by Toby Whithouse and features an underwater base plagued by creeping ghosts and an island that is about to be submerged in water. But who or what is doing this and how can the Doctor stop it? It's very scary, atmospheric and claustrophobic, much like some Classic episodes."
Ep 5/6: "Those two are exceptional! Doctor Who meets Game of Thrones! Well, only because Maisie Williams is in them. The first part features Vikings fighting mercenary robots (and a dragon!) and the second one sees a group of Highwaymen dealing with a Norse God".
Ep 7/8: "This one is written by Peter Harness and Day of the Doctor acted as a prologue to it. In it, the Zygons made peace with the Humans, but not every Zygon decided it was okay so they've been raising an army, silently and now they're rising against UNIT! We've been planning this forever and Osgood is in it! But how is that possible you'd ask? Missy killed her! Who knows? Well, we know."
Ep 9: "This is a very unique Doctor Who story from Mark Gatiss. It wasn't possible to do such an episode ten years ago, when the show came back and Mark has been rewriting it over and over again to make it perfect. It's a beautiful story, very eerie and special, I think it's going to be an instant Classic."
Ep 10: "An episode which leapt out as "why haven't we done this already? This is so Doctor Who we should be doing this immediately". And when Sarah Dollard walked in with the finalised script, it was even better! Really, this is going to be a fan-favorite, everyone will want to rewatch it."
Ep 11/12: "A challenge. I won't say anything else because it would be too spoilery, but when you'll watch it, you're going to ask how exactly the Doctor and Clara are going to pull it off."

So many two-parters!

yes, but which one ends with Annabel or Deus Egg Machina?

My personal opinion is that The Doctor wouldn't work very well if played as a female character. Lots of The Doctor's traits are very masculine. Tinkering with technology (man and his box), borderline loving said technology (his affection for the TARDIS), ignoring the answers directly in front of his face because he has become obsessed with something else etc.

There are a great many female actresses out there who would be an excellent Doctor but I think that after 50 years the lore and the story have contorted in such a way that he is only truly believable as a male character.

___

With regards to the episode 11 rumours, I'd love an episode with just Capaldi in it. Too often the companion/assistant has a huge impact on the resolution of the story so it'll be nice to see The Doctor just go at it alone.

That first paragraph comes across very sexist, almost as if to say that women cannot tinker with and/or love technology. I personally think a female Doctor would mix things up in a positive light, and give the show an added dimension. I mean, if you're really going to bring the shows lore in to it, well, that's opening up an already-opened tin of worms that Moffat resealed.

Plus, it would be interesting to see a female Doctor interact with a male companion, or have a personality clash with another female.

When was the last time we had a Doctor solo episode? I can't remember Smith having one, nor Tennant or Eccleston.

It isn't intended to be sexist but in general, it is men who tinker with engines for hours alone in a garage. It tends to be men who hide away in man cave sheds at the end of a garden with train collections, never ending ordered trays of accurately measured screws by type and by metal variety. Of course women can love and tinker with technology but the type of obsessive behaviour and sheet love/obsession/infatuation with buggering around with it is mostly done by men. It is why there are giant lopsided numbers of men and women on mechanical degree places at University, why the vast majority of mechanics, plumbers, electricians are male.
I work with Autistic children and 95% of the boys are obsessed with trains and can explain their inner workings to a high level. That starts at a young age, around four or five. It is why Thomas the Tank Engine/Thomas and Friends does gangbusters in the Special Needs sector.

Like I said, I think there are loads of great female candidates for the Doctor, but I think the general population would find those 'man in love with his machine' aspects more unbelievable if the Doctor were female.

I mean, there was a huge outcry at the thought of Jodie Kidd being one of the new Top Gear team. There was less negative reception to Guy Martin's rumoured involvement. Why? Because he is a man, mechanically minded and an out an out petrol head.

Hey, I might be wrong. But I'm only arguing it from a very specific aspect of the Doctors personality. They could totally downplay those aspects and go with something new, but then for a lot of people it may not feel like Doctor Who.

Instead of making the Doctor a woman, why not just make one of the other Time Lords escape Gallifrey's pocket dimension and have that one be female? Not every iconic male role has to be transformed into a woman/gay because "it's hip, it's trendy, OMG we're so with the times!"

So in the process of expending my Doctor Who media consumption, I recently read the Gaiman short "Nothing O'Clock", which a part of being overly and excessively (for such a short work) describing the doctor mesmerism, was just brilliant, with a fantastic sci-fi element, used uniquely with good accordance of the DW lore.

So what should I check out next, I prefer written materiel but if it is something really great I am open to the Audio Books.

Doctor Who comics, perhaps?

I personally enjoyed The Forgotten.

It's about the 10th Doctor and Martha mysteriously ending up in a museum based around the Doctor's life. It actually would be cool to see it adapted as a TV special, since it reads so much like it.

I would honestly prefer that the Doctor remain male, but I don't think I'd stop watching or anything if he regenerated into a woman.

Yeah, because fans of classic sci-fi shows always hate it when an adorable lady is super-compitant at mechanics and obsessed with machines in general.

OH WAIT:
