Regal Cinemas starts checking bags ...

My wife's purse was inspected at a Regal this last weekend. She snuck in a pack of snickers and two 25oz Budweisers. The bag check is conducted by a 17 year old and is completely worthless.

Do you really think Regal is searching your bag looking for cigarettes and sex toys? You started the argument, at least make one. Regal is searching bags because they're worried about guns, because we live in a country with far too many of them, lousy mental health care and increasingly poor education.

I'm not exactly derailing here.

Does regal have a big problem with gun suicides I don't know about? Now we are spinning off into healthcare and education. Come on man.

Maybe he just recognizes a gourmand when sees one.

If it was really about checking for weapons they would have people lift their shirts to show their waistbands as well.

Yup, I don't know any that conceals and keeps it in a bag. At my waist hidden at all times. They're doing it so people can just stop sneaking in food lol.

More like taking advantage of the scared and covering up their real reason of checking bags.

How will I sneak in 20 mcnuggets now? I always go to McDonalds, grab the nuggies, put them in a Gamestop bag, and go to the movie theater connected to the mall so no one is the wiser.

Article doesn't say who will be responsible for performing the bag checks. A security guard? Or the 16 year old usher who doesn't give a damn?

Believe me when i say the majority of young people who work at movie theaters absolutely do not give a fuck about you bringing in outside food unless there is a stuck up manager watching them like a hawk.

I just wanted to point out your shitty attempt at comedy.

As opposed to yours at debate?

What exactly is your point, anyway? That there's no gun problem in the US, or that specifically gun suicides are not a pressing issue at theaters?

When I worked at AMC when I was 18 I definitely couldn't give 2 shits if you had food. I'm not going to sit here and argue with you so I use to just tell them to go outside and put it in their bag.

As a film lover since I could remember and a film student who's working to become a screenwriter and director, it's been sickening to me to see a place I consider a home to me be compromised by cowards with weapons.

However, that all said, checking the bags of movie-goers is wrong.

Given what I said before, it should come as no suprise that I view films in the highest regard and to me, a good movie is an experience and something that can let you escape from the entire world around you. Being patted down and having your bags combed through by security compromises the escapism and experience of seeing a movie, it's more like going through an airport.

At this point? Who knows how to fix it. Metal detectors? More invasive.
On demand film services? Not the same experience.

There has to be some way to solve the problem, but this certainly isn't it.

Again, you sound stupid.

We had a bombing a year prior. Not sure what makes sense to you. The kid went running.

Yeah I'd run too if I just got pushed to the ground. Dude you literally assaulted someone. You had a ton of options that didn't involve taking it all into your own hands like a vigilante.

Went to the theaters last night to see Straight outta Compton and the person who checks for tickets is the one who checked bags. I thought it was specifically for this movie.

they say its for security but they just really just don't want you sneaking food in.

basically

No. I was a movie patron that didn't want to die by some idiotic kid.

Are you still following this thread? Batman?

Wtf how does a movie compare to a symphony concert.

Concessions at both are pushed because they make money for the venue.

What symphony concerts serve snacks for consumption during the concert? And there are a ton of other places that have concession stands but either allow food or don't do bag checks for snacks. The price is usually included in the ticket or they do things like price appropriately so theres no real need to work around the rules and bring food in.

You could go to a baseball game here that allows outside food and hot dogs are 1.50 but a local theatre here (Which is a Regal) has hot dogs for 4.50 and a combo with nachos for 7.50. Of course as you can imagine why its not a popular dining option.

And IMO there should be a vending machine option for candy and bottled drinks anyway.

Almost every symphony I've been to sells wine/beer and snacks in the concert hall. Baseball games and other sporting events probably allow outside food because the amount of people they'd have to police would be impossible.

Again, I get that sneaking things in is tempting and worthwhile and I've done it a thousand times, but getting pissed at a private venue for enforcing a rule is silly and a waste of time for you and the staff. Sneak something in well (and if you get caught, oh no your life is over), eat before, or wait 2 hours and eat after.

There are ways

This is really pointless and invasive. They're going to have to be so brief with the search in an attempt to get asses in seats in a timely fashion that the search won't be thorough enough to make a difference and only serve to annoy regular customers.

If I wanna see a movie I don't want to feel like I'm at the fucking airport - I get enough "random checks" there when I'm with family as it is.

So, what are they gonna do exactly when they find food in someone's bag?

I'd love to see how that conversation goes down.

Fixed. 😀

You know that's why they're doing this. A thinly veiled attempt at keeping "security" while in reality they're more concerned with keeping people from sneaking in food.

I went to a movie recently, in Boston.

Some kid left a backpack on the seat next to me and tried to run off. Before he left, I grabbed him and told him to take his bag with him. He declined, so I pushed him to the ground and he grabbed it and ran out.

That's the shit I deal with seeing fucking Chappie.

😲😲😲😲😲 lol what!

Someone who is crazy enough to kill people with guns at the theater isn't gonna be stopped by some dweeb checking everyone's bag at the entrance. This is more to stop people from sneaking in food and drinks into the theater.

Again, you sound stupid.

You don't assault people if you didn't feel comfortable you should of gotten up and left you don't physically grab and push someone because something bad happened in your town that isn't something a normal human being does it's something someone who is overly paranoid and has anger issues does.

And you calling people here stupid?

No. I was a movie patron that didn't want to die by some idiotic kid.

Are you still following this thread? Batman?
A patron not the law.

And obviously if it was a bomb he wouldn't of grabbed it and ran he would of let it blow up and did you bother to apologize for your mob like mentality? No. And he ran after fact because he probably thought some psychopath was about to murder him.

A thread about an ineffective and honestly inconvenient new policy in the name of paying lip service to safety that might result in more expensive movie tockets to boot?

This is fear mongering PR that will do nothing to save anyone's life.

Btw the least you could do is admit you assaulted someone.

If this annoys you then start demand the societal changes needed to keep theater shootings from happening. Obviously companies are not gonna be happy having their brands attached to mass killings.

How many people go to the movies in a year? How many get shot?

This is bullshit reactionary crap.

I don't go often, but AMC or Harkins it is.

The 16 year old gets a crappy 'I am teh security man' t-shirt and escapes being fired that week

Going to the cinema is expensive enough and, as many have said, this really won't change anything. So say a cinema employee, who in all likelihood is only going to have received basic training in 'what to do in case of an emergency' process policy training, finds a gun in their sweep.

Then what? Legit question. The sane and reasonable in response to news of this policy will already not be taking weapons to the cinema on fear if not getting in. So who are the cinema chains likely asking 16 year olds conducting spot checks to confront and challenge?

It may be cynical and predictable but add me to the voices of 'this is about snacks and getting security tax monies added to the price of entry'

I'd stop going to the local movies if they started checking me to see if I took in snacks. Fuck that noise. Like, I rarely even do it to sneak in snacks. I do it to sneak in water so I can watch the fucking movie without getting incredibly thirsty. Sure, they'll give you a cup of water for free, but its the smallest fucking cup. You can buy bottled water, but its at a huge, rip off price.

Enjoy while you can

TSA and AMC are gonna partner up. AMC will get body scanners and charge 20 bucks a ticket to pay for it /s

But seriously the TSAfication of movie theatres in the age of big screen tvs and reduced time between theatrical amd blu ray releases is a damn good way to set theatres on the course of rental stores.

People have to fly if they want to get anywhere fast. People don't have to go to theatres if they want great sound and picture

they say its for security but they just really just don't want you sneaking food in.
No, its really that they want to pay 2 or 3 people slightly above minimum wage to check bags and now they have an excuse to raise ticket prices $1-2 per person.

Dude they aren't gonna get extra hands. They're just gonna get their current likely understaffed staff to do it and charge everyone for the hassle and delay.

No way they'd hire extra people. While most things at movie theaters are about money, this most likely isn't. Just fear.

It's not a thorough search, don't worry. We go to a Regal nearby sometimes and my fiancee has brought her bag twice. They literally look inside and say ok.

My TV and home theater is reason I don't go much anyway. I can't believe anyone is OK with this.

Agreed. If someone leaves a bag, most people would assume the person forgot it by accident. "Hey, you forgot your bag!" would be the sane response. If the person refuses to take it for whatever reason, just let the theater staff know that there is an unattended bag. It's all kinds of crazy to assault someone over it. Like wtf.

they checked us the saturday after the batman shooting 3 years ago. but i've gone there numerous times since then and they haven't done so. what's going on?

They just don't want you bringing in supermarket popcorn.

What makes this security theater stuff -- at theaters, theme parks, sporting events, etc. -- even dumber is that it's women (with purses) who get most inconvenienced, and we guys get to skate right by. Like the shootings that do happen aren't carried out by men acting alone.

If you're going to do anything, check the men.
