Regal Cinemas starts checking bags ...

Well hopefully this backfires with pissed off customers and they drop this stupid policy.

Highly doubt it. I go to at least one movie a week and if the yearly increases in both concessions and movie tickets don't deter people, this won't. Just look at the TSA, how many people it inconvenienced.

Kind of realized something like this would start happening last week when I saw security types walking around. This theater has never employed security. This has everything to do with shootings and other threats.

Yeah but flying is a little bit more important than a movie. Also you can't acvoid the TSA but you can avoid a specific theatre chain

Sure, until it's the next thing that is gone after by seedy types. Have friends who whine about DWI Checkpoints and how police legally shouldn't be allowed to do them. I welcome things like this if it keeps people safe. My inconvenience doesn't trump my safety.

I've noticed a lot of white wine in this thread. seriously guys come on...smh

Honestly I dont mind for metal detectors. Whatever keeps the public safe, the better.

What happens when they find food tho? If it's anything other than still let you in with the food, your point is moot.

They let you keep it, as evidenced by the people who have posted in this thread saying they have gone to the movies since this policy was enacted and had their bags searched.

Except this isn't going to keep anyone safe.

pls stop with the theater defense force.

THEY'RE COMING FOR OUR CANDY AND YOU ALL ARE BLIND TO IT

Can cinema-going become any worse? Just when you thought it couldn't...

I don't know about US but in UK you're allowed to bring food in so long as it isn't hot. No hot food is because it smells.

They just don't shout that info to you because they like the idea people aren't sure.

In Canada they sell ketchup popcorn which smells like a sock you put between a sweaty ass so I don't think hot food smell is a concern.

Well America doesn't want to get rid of its guns, so deal with the consequences. It sucks, but with all the shootings, it's for the best.

I have used a bag many of times to sneak food in and it would suck to lose that option.

It's not real security. If a person with a tank showed up they couldn't do anything. Unless they can secure themselves and the people against all threats it's just for show and done to remind you that you are property of the state. Security Theater has been proven to not work.

Or if you're so concerned with the extremely low chance of there being a spree killing you could just stay at home and watch a movie...

The way to stop that kind of shit is not by having more security but by offering better mental help options and greater employment opportunities for people.

Metal detectors are next. Clearly the U.S. isn't going to make any headway in terms of gun control and speed bumps will have to be put in place to prevent more tragedies. Sorry to say it, but something like Aurora will happen again or even worse. Chains will get sued up the ass. They have to do something in order to show that they're trying.

This is why it is imperative to repeal the 2nd amendment. The sooner the better.

probably be better if they just scrap the constitution and start over.

it was created almost 230 years ago, in an era which is vastly different to today.

I find it almost ironic that america does not amend the amendments.

How did we get from "I don't want some teenager pawing through my bags when I go to the movies" to "I don't know why America doesn't rid itself of its Bill of Rights?"

They did this after the Dark Knight Returns shooting as well. It won't be permanent and it's honestly just as awkward for the staff as the customers, if not more so.

That said, Regal is a shitty company that bends over backwards to screw their staff so by all means don't see movies with them.

How much safer is this supposed to make a movie theatre if someone decides they want to go on a rampage?

they say its for security but they just really just don't want you sneaking food in.

I think this is the only thing checking bags will be good for. I keep the snacks in my coat though.

I went to a movie recently, in Boston.

Some kid left a backpack on the seat next to me and tried to run off. Before he left, I grabbed him and told him to take his bag with him. He declined, so I pushed him to the ground and he grabbed it and ran out.

That's the shit I deal with seeing fucking Chappie.

Wow you just physically assaulted some kid for no clear reason. What a hero. You sound like a piece of shit tbh.

Is it legal in the US to let some random company check your bags? I understand you can just say no and walk out, but isn't there any rule that allows your right to enter a place (even a private place open to the public) without being subject to an illegal search?

I have nothing to hide and if it keeps some assholes from shooting the place up so be it.

These are the times we live in.

Team Stark

I don't see the problem...

1) People shoot a bunch of people at movie theaters.
2) Rather than change our attitude/laws towards guns, we change our attitudes/laws towards theaters

Just as our solution to schools being shot up is.... put more security in schools. That's why I'm upset, at least. The common underlying problem are guns, not schools or theaters. It's like solving the problem of female assault by requiring all women to wear burkas; the problem isn't on the woman's end, and she shouldn't have to "solve" anything.

My mom went to a Regal theater the other day and actually heard one of the employees telling another woman that they don't care if they find food in the bag. So it's still annoying and dumb, but at least they're not checking for candy.

Why is this a problem to some? I'd like the movie theater to be a fun place again someday, where I don't have to fear being murdered execution style while I'm chilling and enjoying a movie.

Nothing says fun like filing through a security checkpoint to see a movie. I'd rather go to one of the 5 non-regal cinemas in my area that won't treat me like a suspected terrorist.

If the American public and by extension their politicians, were capable of reasonable gun legislation to ensure public safety, none of this would be happening. Instead you get half-assed band-aids like this.

So what if a gunman has it in his waistband?

Pat-downs?

I mean, I'm slightly paranoid about people in theaters (have been even before shootings), but this is ridiculous, and serves no purpose other than preventing sneaking in snacks.

I guess the thinking is that someone could do a lot less damage with a handgun tucked into a waistband than an M4 in a duffel bag.

Still doesn't address the real issue, which is half this country's obsession with guns.
