Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

As far as I'm concerned, they picked the worst option- another numbered collectible across an open world

I could be wrong but I believe most story tapes just go into our tape inventory as you complete missions. It is the music tapes that have to be hunted.

I just noticed that the Kinda Funny review has been added to the OP with a spoiler-free tag.

There is a MASSIVE spoiler in that video, no matter how much they claim it's spoiler-free

This right here. I had to rewatch it and someone told me what the spoiler was, ITS FUCKIN HUGE. Someone needs to edit the review list.

How did Kojima end up with the 360 version? it's terrible how Konamu are treating him.

GOTY awards will be a bloodbath. Bloodborne, Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, MGS5, and (likely) Fallout 4 would all be major contenders in any year. Throw in the oft-forgotten PC exclusives like Pillars of Eternity and Skylines, and it's just crazy.

Bloodborne and Batma AK there are without opportunities imo

Agree, if your reading this OP you might consider removing the spoiler-free tag from that link.

Link to the IGN video review? I can't find it anywhere.

Neither can I, I watched it this morning (at least I thought I did - it was early) but they appear to have removed it. The Gametrailers one is really good. Detailed and spoiler free.

Seems that way. The poster has a map on each side.

exactly. and then theres Motherbase.

Ive not read the reviews but for those that have. what is the consensus on mission layout and open-world density? I saw some comment about vast deserts and the mission play area being inside that but zoned 'off' like GZ, is this also true? I mean im not expecting GTA level of atmoshpere but i can imagine getting bored just seeing trees, deserts and the odd sand storm..

Can someone tell me why Shinkawa is such a legend? i mean GODDAMN.

The disparity between the reviews and the discussion of those reviews in this thread is hilarious. Has the hype killed Gaf's brains?

I was a North American Fall Webworm in my past life. Those were the good old days... What were you in your former life?

OMG MY DREAM FINAL BOSS FIGHT BIG BOSS VS SOLID SNAKE CAN STILL HAPPEN!

With all due respect, but implying that certain things happen (or don't happen) by the ending (be it the first ending or the second) is very much a spoiler in my book. It makes me go into the game knowing that the ending won't be this or that.

How is this a spoiler? I don't know anything, i said this since the beginning that Solid Snake would be my dream final boss.

You get tapes after completing missions.

Oh really? That's not too bad then.

Personally I think the perfect solution would be to have the codec as an equipped item, hold LT to ready and press a face button to choose who to call. Conversations would be two way and context sensitive and would play during the mission similar to tapes even if you unequipped the codec -but if you had the codec out you could skip through conversations. All conversations would be recorded to a tape you could play later when accessed through the menu/idroid.

What spoiler is it? PM me please because I watched it and there isn't any spoilers at all.
Oh I know what your talking about, I don't know how to tell you this but, it's a known "spoiler" it's been posted in here, the community thread, the spoiler thread, the lets play thread etc. seriously, you must have been the last to know about that lol.

Other than that "spoiler" that everyone already knows now, it's completely spoiler free.

It'll come down to Witcher 3, MGS5, and Fallout 4. Bloodborne isn't accessible enough, Arkham Knight had the Batmobile and shitty PC port, and PoE and Skylines are too obscure.

Bethesda games tend to win the most but they've never had the competition that Fallout 4 has this year. MGS5 will win on GAF hands down and probably take some of the big outlets but it all really depends on how in love the media is with FO4 by the time awards are given out.

I don't think the Kinda Funny video is a spoiler. It's also playing up the parts of the game I was worried about and it's not filling me with much confidence in the game

I think this is the point at which I go radio silent for a couple of weeks. I don't want any accidental spoilers of any kind, or even too many pre-conceptions about what I'm going to experience.

I don't do this for every game, but I feel Devil's Third is going to be worth it.
I may also play The Phantom Pain.

I thought this myself! Although more of a traditional MGS game.

Imagine a pre-prequel. A pre-MGS3 prequel.

Imagine an MGS game where we play The Boss in WWII.

Female protagonist. Various WWII fronts and battle theatres (French front line, African theatre, Eastern European behind-enemy-lines, Pacific theatre). Old-school technology, original RADAR, etc. The origins and drama behind the COBRA unit - her affair with The Sorrow, Ocelot's origins, etc...

The potential is pretty crazy.

Am dreaming about this since 2005.

Speaking behind enemy lines in occupied France!?

Would even buy that if konami makes it without kojima.

How can it be a spoiler if you needed someone to tell you it was one and then to re-watch the video?

I watched(or better listened) the video but thankfully wasnt really paying attention so i didnt understand that there is a spoiler

Gah, I don't know why. But I'm not as excited for this as I should be. I've been a HUGE Metal Gear Solid fan since I was a kid playing through MGS1. I seriously got through rough periods of my life just by saying, "I need to play MGS4". But this one doesn't seem like why I liked mgs in the first place... it was never about the gameplay to me. Actually let me rephrase that, it was never about the shooting and combat scenarios to me and it seems like MGSV is only about that. And seeing reviews loving it but saying it is sparse on story makes me concerned...

I still want it, but it looks more like an entertaining open world game (to which there are way too many nowadays), but not a particularly nostalgic entertaining MGS game. Also Ground Zeroes didn't really do it for me at all, it plays so much like a shooter (I love shooters btw). Oh well, maybe it'll change once I play it.

Curious if there is anyone else that feels this way?

(also people saying, "I played 40 hours and I'm not even half way done!" is not attractive to me. It just shows that there is just way too much fluff to me... maybe I'm just too old for open-world games now)

Watching Kinda Funny review...He got me worried about the story :( Doesn't seem all that great

Exactly, it's not a spoiler. Well it is but it would have become common knowledge when the reviews hit anyway considering it was one of the first things everybody asked.

For anyone wondering it's
the fact that when the story "ends" there are other story missions left that wrap up a lot of questions and characters etc. so basically the story doesn't end when you think it does and the credits roll twice.
