Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Previous games: 15-20 hours campaign with like 1/3rd cutscenes right?
If we now take TPP: 40+ hours campaign with still probably like 5-7 hours cutscenes.
(MGS 4 is an exception...)

If we compare:
MGS 1-3: ~33% cutscenes
MGS 5: ~15% cutscenes

I think that is what most reviewers are referring to. I can't believe it will have a lesser amount of story than previous entries. I'm pretty sure the ratio is the only thing that is different.

But I could be completely off the mark with that guess... 1 week... 1 week...

I think this is very realistic. It'll probably be the same amount, maybe even more, story than the previous games in total, but it will be spread more even-handedly across the whole experience.

Which is great, imo. It wasn't actually the fact of MGS's cutscenes which were problematic, it was their pacing. They always were huge exposition dumps which would have worked if they were spaced out more. Hope it's the case here.

a well written review for those who understand italian, goes into more detail about what is needed in order to see the real ending.

Quick translation of pro and cons

PRO

Best, most fleshed out gameplay in the series
Incredible amount of content and stuff to do
The beginning and the end of the story are involving, exciting and surprising
Well directed, technically (almost) flawless, amazing sound design

CONS

Second half of the game is undermined by questionable design choices (repeated missions with much higher difficulty levels - which will probably have you go back and grind to level your character - filler stuff) that damage balance, story progression and are cause of frustration

Besides the beginning and end, the story progresses slowly and gets somewhat lost in the huge amount of available missions and tasks.

Has to be said though, that a lot of those quesionable design choices, you only come across if you want to unlock the true ending, which however the reviewer treated as mandatory.

Has any of the reviews talked about how long the actual campaign is?

I've seen a lot of "I've played for 30 hours", but no mention of how much time one can expect to invest to see credits roll in the game. Seemingly because most of the reviewers spent time in the side missions and the likes as well.

But as someone with limited time, I would really like to know if I can wrap this game up in 10 hours or it will be a massive thing I'll never see the end of.

Lowest estimates around 40 hours (this would be you mainlining the story missions only probably)

Highest estimates 80-100 hours (this might involve a lot of extra work – completing all side objectives for missions and getting all story tapes etc – for
the 'true' ending which really wraps up the series as a whole and is apparently brilliant
)

Holy shit all 4 versions got the perfect score from famitsu? :O

Dat FOX engine.

According to them, tapes are 50% of the story.

Biggest gripe with the game : opening credits to missions spoil characters you'll meet a few minutes later while playing

Well i guess i will have to look away at the credits or something.Pretty stupid way to spoil a new character

The spoiler thread spoils way more that I don't want to know. I just want that one info. And spoilers in the spoiler thread aren't marked afaik.

You will find it out when the game is out.

No spoilers here.

I think a lot of people in here are using this as de-facto discussion thread so FYI apparently some Belgian place broke the street date. Someone is streaming on Twitch now and he said as much.

So go buy it, Belgian people.

As it's a bank holiday here in the UK on Monday, I'm hearing (but no confirmation yet) that the LE from game is going out tomorrow. Really hoping that's true.

That's not too dissimilar to Peace Walker. Sure PW had a decent amount of comic-style cut-scenes as well but a bunch of the story was put in the tapes, especially Eva's tapes, which basically laid out The Boss's entire backstory, which covered not only PW, but 3 to an extent as well.

EDGE aren't overly keen on Metal Gear, IIRC. I think the highest rated one was MGS1 which tagged a nine, but all the others have been a little lower even by their scale. I'm not a fan of that mag because they're 100% all about the gameplay, which is noble and justified and all but player agency, atmosphere and general context factor into my personal enjoyment enormously, and I know I'm not alone. And when it comes to that, nobody does it better than MGS.

Of course this could be the 'Gear that finally gives them the pure gameplay they desire.

(edit) I never saw their GZ review.

Sorry but where can I discuss spoilers within spoiler tags then? :(
I just took a short peek into the spoiler thread and it's full with story stuff. -.-

Do you really need to know the true ending from a game that isn't even out yet? i mean really?
