Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Haven't watched today's launch trailer in fear of anymore spoilers since we're so close to release and Im getting it day one.

How spoilery is this trailer? Do you advice me to just skip it or is it harmless?

The only spoiler revolves around a Metal Gear, it's pretty darn cool.

I haven't seen it, but I haven't because everyone says it spoils a pretty big twist at the end.

so, a big nope from me

That's not a spoiler.

It spoils what the new metal gear can do, that's about it,

Say WHAT? Holy shit I'm staying the fuck away from that.

Jesus, Kojima why would you do this a week from release!?

So you listen to someone who hasn't seen the trailer? Haha, okay. The only spoilery thing revolves around a Metal Gear, and it's not what he's talking about. What he's talking about is not a spoiler. Do you really think Kojima would spoil something big in a launch trailer that people will see before playing the game?

That's not a spoiler.

everyone has been saying it, and better be cautions in my case, I'll watch it, but after I finish the game

EDIT: you are literally the first person today to say it's not spoilery, even in the stream they are saying it contains an important spoiler, I don't know how big, obviously, but it is there...

tbh, that's pretty usual from Kojima, the only part I didn't like was that he said it would not be "spoilery" which obviously it was...

I was almost played like a damn fiddle

First off, I would say watch the trailer. It's not really a big spoiler at all.

Secondly, did you follow MGS4 pre-release? Because that game's trailer spoiled big parts of it (60+%), including Shadow Moses.

No they're not, the majority of people realise it's not a spoiler. It literally goes against EVERYTHING we've played and seen so far, it's just a metaphor.

Just saw your edit. You clearly didn't look in the threads for the trailer then, many many people pointed out that it wasn't a spoiler.

What's the word on the PC version? Any scores or port thoughts??

Konami hasn't sent out review codes for the PC version. GZ was a pretty great performing port and they've been pretty communicative with the PC audience about TPP. Though they did push the PC release 2 weeks up so that might cause some issues.

The context of codec calls are literally "it's too expensive to animate all this script". That's it.

Metal Gear had codecs from day one of course, but they were fairly succinct and economical. After Kojima made Snatcher and Policenauts, he fell in love with the idea of his games embodying the style of radio play (he even went on to create spinoff audio dramas for Snatcher and Metal Gear), and that's something which has never really left him. He writes his heart out with big, epic monologues and enjoys the idea of people following exposition, drama, and general musings via sound alone.

You know, I think saying that somethings spoils a big twist near the end of the game in this case is a bigger spoiler. Especially since my perception of the trailer was that it was cool editing, not something to be taken factually.

While the "spoiler" people are talking about isn't a real spoiler (it couldn't be) the trailer still shows things you would probably rather experience yourself.

I for one regret watching it

I'm never been this excited for a game in a long time. I really hope that the PC version delivers as I want to play this game the best way possible. After listening Peter Brown talk about the story, I am even more excited for this. The first Metal Gear Solid is one of my all time favorites and I'm glad the gameplay has taken a bigger focus this time around. A 50+ hour Metal Gear Solid game. That is crazy given the amount of detail in the game.

When you are dropped into the jungle, it reminded me of Metal Gear on the NES. When I played that game, I was imagining that it looked like this.

So I've been riding the hype pretty high for the last few days, and it reminded me of when I got MGS4 a few days earlier than release! I actually posted about it on NeoGAF too, so I went tracking and found it lol:

The replies in the thread are really funny too. Man that was awesome, sadly I can't see it happening again now 7 years later.... the place I got it from was taken over by EB Games! :( Maybe thats why they sold it, didn't care anymore.

Geeeez 2008 doesn't seem long ago when you say it, but when you count it out, 7 years wtf????? :| Where does the time go?!

That thread so awesome! The hype for that game was on a different level. Everyone seemed so much more excited than now. There are still a few of us super excited guys still around.

The trailer shows the new Metal Gear. That's it.

Are you cool with seeing what the new Metal Gear is and what it can do? Then you are good.

Hey so I watched some parts of the latest let's play form this greg guy, and I think I saw him being discovered in the middle of the base, which, to me, didn't seem like it triggered instant alert. You see the guy shooting and yelling, then you see a red exclamation mark on a guy behind a wall a few meters away from the scene, and a few seconds later the alert triggers.

(been watching muted since apparently he spoils like an idiot. Haven't watched any cutscenes, only focused on already seen gameplay)

I'll post the link below. It's at the 11: 15 mark.

Linku desu

So again, the part I'm talking about contains no spoiler whatsoever, but as I have watched that part and only that part, I can't say for the rest of the video (whether beginning or end).

Stay strong!

I did and I hated it. They revealed way too fucking much. I would've loved to not have the whole Rex vs Ray fight spoiled in trailers. I would've lost my shit if that was a surprise.

MGS4's marketing campaign is what has me in media blackout for MGSV.

This gonna have to be some game to be better than MGS 3. Fuck! I can't wait. I'MMMMM LOOOOSSSSIINNNGGG MYYYYSSEEEELLLLLLFFFFF

This initiated a sequence where time slowed down, and I had just a few seconds to aim and try to tranquilize the enemy before he was able to call for backup. I missed, and he started to call backup. However, calling backup does take some time, so I was able to put him down while he was in the middle of this call. Once he was down, I waited around to see if any other soldiers answered his half-plea for help. Thankfully, only one enemy came, and I quickly took care of him.

So is there anyone who played the game still around? Got a question about consequences, since this is a game where you can replay eveything I assume killing people on your first go won't have any consequences. You can simply replay the mission and Fulton whoever you want after right?

There is no way to "miss" something correct?

in what forum are you?? gaf is HYPE in these days, there are like 7 thread in front page about MGSV and i love it

I love reading this old MGS4 thread. I went about 10 pages in after release and not one negative reaction. People even loving act 3 and 4. I feel like gaf got invaded by MGS4 haters years later.

MGS4 haters in GAF are just a handful of people. It's sad that they somehow believe they are majority. :v

MGS4 should be used as the prime example when psychologists discuss herd mentality. It should be in textbooks.

Do you have Ground Zeroes? If so, can you check what exactly transferred over?

Curious about this too, Kojima said some of your actions will transfer over to TPP. My guess is most likely, the prisoners that you saved at the very least will transfer over to your mother-base, i can see them being captains or whatever.
