There are no spoilers in that post. But I've gone and edited it out anyways. You can edit my quote if you want to remove record of it. But again: There are no actual spoilers in there, nor any specifics you could deduce. I was describing the magnitude of the surprise, not what the surprise is.
I don't think it's a heinous crime to say the story is surprising to the degree past games have been. That's not saying it's the same surprise by any means. It's just saying it's surprising and you should be excited and expect the unexpected.
Wait, there's going to be surprises in this game???
Big ones!Wait, there's going to be surprises in this game???
Just tell me in a good or bad way?(No other specifics) The way you talk sounds like it's a bigass retcon haha.

I like it. I think it enhances the series' story as a whole.Just tell me in a good or bad way?(No other specifics) The way you talk sounds like it's a bigass retcon haha.
Holy Jesus, DrBo.
Well, every MGS game to date has them. I'm just impressed by the ones in this game. That's all.I ... can't ...
Knowing that there's evenisn't a given. That's sort of part of how they work.--------a twist--------
Shhhhh.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Anyways, lets go back to our codec vs tapes discussions.
I do have a gameplay question, now that I'm interested in this game again.
How different are the controls and mechanics from MGS4 (which itself was an evolution over prior titles)?
I like how MGRR handled the codecs, where you already have them and can access them at any time, but they don't interrupt gameplay. That's the best of both worlds: accessibility and content, but it doesn't get in the way.I'm really hoping they aren't too much of a bitch to find. Spending hours just to find the last couple of tapes will rustle my jimmies something fierce.

You could always look up the codecs on YouTube if you can't be arsed to track them down in an open world.I think there are a few hidden and few locked away(opened only on higher difficulties?). Just guessing here but I am sure like GZ there were a few that you had to collect.

Do they still show the faces talking? Like a window-in-window view? Or is it just audio now? That is true but I am in the camp that always preferred codecs as it is the standard in MGS games and actually it was one of the things that were unique to MGS. Now we get the boring "tapes" like every other game out there.
When is the OT going up?
Perhaps, but "wink-wink, nudge-nudge I know a seeee-cret!" posts are obnoxious as hell.I went and edited my post. Despite the fact there were no spoilers. Nor anything that could lead to people guessing the twist.

And Neiteio, seriously, stop. There's a fucking spoiler thread. Just because you've exhausted spoiler discussion there doesn't mean it's a discussion you should be having here.
I lol'd
I didn't say anything more than the GT review said when they said the story has huge surprises that will send shockwaves through the series.Perhaps, but "wink-wink, nudge-nudge I know a seeee-cret!" posts are obnoxious as hell.
Huh, I wonder how they'll handle the balance between a codec playing and receiving commands at the same time.Just audio, but you could rewind, pause, fast forward at any moment. The good thing is that you could play while listening but why would you want to do that? You want to focus on what's being said so you'll most likely hide in a quiet spot and listen. Furthermore, going by GZ, if you are playing and Kaz happens to tell you something it'll overlap with what you're listening lol.
You and me both, the next 6 days are going to be a pain in the ass.

ALL THIS TALK ABOUT ENDING CAUSING MELTDOWNS IN HERE

The codec calls? So you can listen to the story outside the game? Not to mention that you can play them through the Phantom Pain app for smart phones.

You know what sucks though? This is a 30-50 hour game. I won't go into any spoiler threads until I've completely finished the game story. That could take weeks for me.![]()

If I had to guess (and I really am just guessing), maybe the codec calls are more just world-building detail this time around, and less crucial plot developments. So it's not as essential to hear them all.
I didn't play GZ or PW, but I really enjoyed the gameplay in MGS4. Not so much the structure, which I found uneven (I wish every chapter was like the Middle East and South America), nor the ham-fisted storytelling that was badly in need of an editor (but still had some cool concepts and emotional beats like the ending). It depends on the tape really, that is why they are all specifically named. I'm sure you haven't played Peace Walker but it was like that. Since TPP is based on the structure of how Peace Walker is then I'm expecting the game thing just bigger, badder and more awesome.

I feel intrigued by MGSV, which looks a lot more liberating from a gameplay standpoint. The new approach to storytelling seems like it would improve the pacing and flow.
But I take forever to play these games. I'm such a chickenshit sometimes when it comes to stealth. Hard to be decisive when I feel one wrong move will bring down the wrath of an entire army.
Thanks. Thought it was a week before release but guess that has changed.OT goes up the day before release, so August 31st I guess.
lol @ the chicken hatTPP will probably have the most freedom in any of the MGS games. You're dropped in entire open world area to traverse and do whatever you want, on top of that you are slowly recruiting people + managing your base as well as your currency + building shit for yourself + strengthening your relationships with the characters that act as your buddy system + FOB(Your online only Motherbase which acts as a side thing to your main one and it's also open for people to invade it so you'll get to engage in PVP's) + sending out your troops on missions designed just for them + tons of side missions and of course tapes to collect. So yes, the game is overwhelming lol.
However, there is also the chicken hat which can make you invisible from what I heard. That's good for people who are not good in stealth or you could always just barge into bases like Rambo.
lol @ the chicken hat
That's a neat concept, but I'm not looking to cheese the game.
It's hard for me to picture an open-world stealth game. I always think of small, tightly-designed spaces when I think of stealth. So that has me intrigued.
So do the PVP invasions. I love the Dark Souls inspiration, but does this mean you have to constantly babysit your base, or is it only vulnerable when you're there?

As far as spoilers are concerned, will people still be advised to use the official spoiler thread?
Don't they usually unlock after finishing the game anyways?

Hmm, I'm not sure. From what I read some reviewers used it to get to the end quick.
