Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

I wasn't going to post about this initially, but I guess it might be worth it now.

An anonymous source reached out to me on Twitter yesterday saying Shovel Knight is absolutely coming to Smash and that I can "quote them on it." Of course I don't believe anything like that sight unseen, and I let them know as much, but they proceeded to give me very, very specific details about Shovel Knight's supposed moveset and stage - too many details for them all to be lucky guesses.

I wouldn't put too much stock into that, literally anyone can type up fake details. See: nearly every 4chan Smash leak ever.

Could be wrong, but not only are the other guys getting more than one source, but those sources aren't anonymous.
I mean, I'd consider anything less than an actual name and something to prove you are who you say to be effectively anonymous. It's really easy to fake your background online

How Sakurai-like, on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being making a fun character out of the fucking duck hunt dog, 1 being Playstation All Stars), was the moveset Ash?

Who knows if any of it is true, but they also said he's getting revealed at PAX... so at least I don't have to wait long to find out if they're full of it or not. I have reached out to them again in light of the amiibo getting leaked, but haven't heard back yet.

I'll keep you guys updated, for anything this little situation is worth.
Don't do this to us :P

Place yer bets, people!

With Source Gaming behind it, and Ash's details about the dude who contacted him, I have to say I'm with real.

I didn't believe it early on because it sounded ridiculous, and then the Amiibo this morning confirmed to me that the leak was wrong, but then all the pieces started falling in place and I think it's real and will release within a week, if not tonight.

It's just... a crazy character to have in Smash and doesn't fit at all. But... I still believe it after the last few hours of information came out.

Kind of weird that almost none of the ballot picks were new Nintendo characters, this is kind of why I hate cuts, because we end up having to waste time worrying about cut characters again along with new characters we may hope to see. Don't mind Wolf but really hoping its Ice Climbers. If it's true that Sakurai takes criticisms to heart by even the nuttier fans, I'm assuming he's going to have to knuckle down, buckle down and prepare for the storm, the last of the DLC won't go over well with fanatics if it ends up being Shovel Knight and a semi-clone veteran.

I think Shovel Knight was a great game really, glad to see him possibly make it in. Looking forward to tonight.

Ryu wasn't a ballot character
Nor were Roy and lucas

Can't believe we're being taken for yet another Smash leak train ride.

Remember the heartbreak with the Rayman leak?

NotLiquid remembers.

Hahahaha what the hot shit

And here I thought I was done with the smash bros crazy train

Sakurai you glorious nutjob

Considering the large number of "sources", this is more comparable to the Duck Hunt + Bowser Jr link, yeah?

No, that had video evidence.

Let's go #TeamReal. My gut's been pretty on point with leaks this cycle (the Dr. Mario stage is the only one to really throw me - and the expanded Gematsu leak, I guess, but I still consider that information outdated rather than "wrong"), and this one just feels right.

Post them deets here on the off chance your guy is full of shit but coicidentally it actually happens for real :P

Was the source anonymous or was it someone who requested to remain anonymous?

Shovel Knight in Smash would be very cool though. Hopefully your dude is right and you can share those details once he's confirmed.

And if the guy was lying you should tell us what he said anyway since it's not real!

Someone who requested to remain anonymous. Sorry, I should have specified!

Totally. That's why I was so unsure about sharing this. I don't want to get people riled up for nothing. I would say it's better to doubt my source until they prove themselves in some way.

Well, they didn't give me his entire (supposed) moveset, but from what I know? Let's say 7. If real, it has pretty much what you would expect with a couple of neat surprises.

If Shovel Knight gets revealed, it puts a huge amount of credit behind the ballot actually working.

SK was at the top of lists right when the ballot first came out. He tapered off later, but had the support when it mattered.

If a random indie, barely a year old can get into Smash because of the ballot, it obviously worked as intended.

Gotta disagree here. He's not the ballot character that I wanted, so the ballot didn't really work.

I think it's sorta in between. John Harker suggested that the Rayman leak might have had some truth to it since Ubi approaching Nintendo to have him in Smash was something that had actually happened. The DH / Bowser Jr leak didn't have any sources but it did have all that footage.

Right now with this character leak we have a lot of sources but no screenshots, other than an Amiibo package that might be a mockup.

It's gonna turn out it's Gomez from Fez instead.

It's gonna be like one of those Sakurai "never ask anything from me again" edits but with "choke on it" instead.

It makes sense that there are people in the industry that would have heard about this, considering this is a western-based indie character. The farther removed things are from Japan, the leakier the ship becomes. Normally I wouldn't trust random twitter people to know hyper specific moveset details of unreleased characters, but given that YCG would have to sign off on anything done with Shovel Knight (and probably be pretty involved in his development), it stands to reason that stuff could've gotten out.

Ooh, I missed that part about Rayman. If I'm remembering correctly we did have a text leak about DPit, Jr, and Duck Hunt way before the pictures though, and some Smash Boarders said they'd been hearing about those characters being in for a while after the pictures surfaced.

And smash has always been super leaky. Mario's not doing his job

Maybe, maybe not. Unless they specifically say something along the lines of "sk has done exceptionally well in the us polls, sakurai and his team reached out to ycg and they said yes" for all we know Shovel Knight in Smash is happening because Sakurai got a chance to play the game and was instantly blown away that he made it happen.
