Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

I wasn't going to post about this initially, but I guess it might be worth it now.

An anonymous source reached out to me on Twitter yesterday saying Shovel Knight is absolutely coming to Smash and that I can "quote them on it." Of course I don't believe anything like that sight unseen, and I let them know as much, but they proceeded to give me very, very specific details about Shovel Knight's supposed moveset and stage - too many details for them all to be lucky guesses.

Who knows if any of it is true, but they also said he's getting revealed at PAX... so at least I don't have to wait long to find out if they're full of it or not. I have reached out to them again in light of the amiibo getting leaked, but haven't heard back yet.

I'll keep you guys updated, for anything this little situation is worth.

I didn't vote for Shovel Knight but I would be very hyped if this ends up being real. SK was an excellent game.

Ooh, I missed that part about Rayman. If I'm remembering correctly we did have a text leak about DPit, Jr, and Duck Hunt way before the pictures though, and some Smash Boarders said they'd been hearing about those characters being in for a while after the pictures surfaced.

Oh yeah come to think of it I think I remember that happening, but I think it was also grouped together with a bunch of lists that suggested there were more characters beyond those that ended up on the starting roster? It was such a while ago that my memory is hazy.

Then again it seems like similar info that informed the Gematsu leak and even Spainkiller's own info so who knows how much of that was real at some point lol

I really, really hope they include him in Smash. In my opinion, he "fits" Smash better than Ryu or Shulk, and we don't need more small-headed weirdos around.

Maybe, maybe not. Unless they specifically say something along the lines of "sk has done exceptionally well in the us polls, sakurai and his team reached out to ycg and they said yes" for all we know Shovel Knight in Smash is happening because Sakurai got a chance to play the game and was instantly blown away that he made it happen.
I also think that out of the top cut on the ballot they paid a lot of attention to why people thought they should be in, and shovel knight as representing indies seems like a strong reason to me

Its also possible that Sakurai was intrigued by SK's poll popularity and that's what got him to play the game. Its possible that he had played it before, but not as likely since it isn't out in Japan.

If Shovel Knight gets revealed, it puts a huge amount of credit behind the ballot actually working.

SK was at the top of lists right when the ballot first came out. He tapered off later, but had the support when it mattered.

If a random indie, barely a year old can get into Smash because of the ballot, it obviously worked as intended.
If they actually come out and say something along these lines, then absolutely. Hopefully that means Toad has a real chance, too. Right? Please.

Also, think about all the people that never heard of Shovel Knight going to get his amiibo.

Place yer bets, people!

Should edit mine in: #TeamReal
Because why not!
#TeamReal

The Shovel Knight game is too good not to get a rep. Shovel Knight game is better than all other third party characters games combined.

And really, noone will give me a $10 eShop card in exchange for my $10 PSN Card? I have a feeling SK will be released tonight and not getting him second one is unbearable. :(

Sorry to keep posting the offer but I'm going crazy thinking I could miss SK for a few days. D:

I really do wonder if it's sunken into the devs yet just how lucky they are.

This is pretty much the highest honor an indie character could possibly have, to be considered on the same level as Mario, Sonic, Ryu, Pac Man, Bowser, and so on. To be immortalized for generations. To have people fight and argue on the internet about your character returning for Smash 15 and how much they miss when they did 5% on the forward smash instead of 2%. To have your character be a skin or bonus in tons and tons of games as an Amiibo.

If Shovel Knight gets into Smash he'll be immortalized as a Smash character, forever. The same immortality that can keep an old race car driver relevant, or a forgotten Pokemon around, can breath new life into an old NES series, and introduce millions to a quirky, niche RPG series.

I guess we'll find out soon, but I'd be really disappointed if he's a full blown character.
A costume for a few choice indies and maybe a SK amiibo for use outside of Smash would be welcome, tho

This is beautiful. This makes me want Shovel Knight even more now.

Thank you.

In a world with Duck Hunt Duo and Wii Fit Trainer, i'd like to not get caught on the wrong side of "no way!" again, but sometimes a man has to make a stand.

#TeamFake. Bring it!

Even though I don't want Shovel Knight in myself, that's the most touching thing I've seen all day.

So has anyone pointed out the fact that the SK has a series logo on it, that looks something like it would in Smash?

Well said, and completely correct.

So wait, more sources are validating Shovel Knight? I don't know if I can take this.

That's pretty wonderful to think about, honestly. Like, just a couple of years ago this game was fighting to drum up a budget on Kickstarter. Now they're in bed with Nintendo, and it's probably thanks to fans drumming up interest on the Ballot. This is a great summary!

So is this Nindies event happening at 8 PM Pacific, or 8 PM Eastern? Because I have work in the morning, so I should really be in bed by 11.
This reveal would probably have me up until 1 or something, though.

I don't know if I can take this.

Pax is in Seattle, so I'd assume pacific

What a fantastic and accurate post. Once a character is in Smash, they're always in Smash. Look at Roy and Marth, two character who didn't have a game outside of Japan and gained popularity to the point where Roy actually had demand for a return. People still talk abut Pichu for better or worse and argue whether someone like Dr. Mario should've come back. Smash has and can do things for a character.

Smashgaf assemble!.
Future SmashGAF member (once I get it for Wii U) saying Hi!

If Shovel Knight is real, I doubt we're going to find out tonight. Smash reveals usually are part of directs and pax nindie thing is probably too small for this sort of thing. I'm not convinced either way though.

Things changed after Iwata passed. They haven't done a direct since then and mostly use Twitter now to reveal things.

Shovel Knight is a weird character. On one hand, I completely agree with Ryce and everyone saying that Shovel Knight has absolutely no business being alongside Sonic, Mega Man, Ryu, and Pacman.

But on the other, I know I'm not the only one who played Shovel Knight and loved the gameplay, music and especially characters to the point where I immediately wanted all of them in Smash Bros. The character designer deserves some sort of trophy.

He's talking about LiamR, I think. He's Tamaki/Doctor Cupcakes on Twitter

No, we did have a SmashGAF member with a rabbit avatar called Afoni, and (s)he used to post fake leaks all the time before getting banned. Maybe it was LiamR's account, but Mr. Saturn's right; FandangoX seems to be describing the GAF Member Afoni, rather than LiamR's Twitter.

(S)he's banned because of all of those fake leaks, though. I mean, I thought the name was enough of a clue that any and all information given by this random GAF account would be fake, but I can see why the mods would still ban the account. I forgot all about Afoni until just now, though! Those speculation days were crazy, man.

No matter how good his game is, Shovel Knight's inclusion would cheapen the roster for me. You don't just allow anyone into the game. If it's not a Nintendo character, it has to be a big, iconic one. Shovel Knight is neither. His game isn't even out in Japan. Sakurai might not even have played the game yet.

Him getting an amiibo is absolutely great news if true. It shows that NCL is paying attention to the indie scene and is willing to invest in it. Getting an amiibo is a huge accomplishment in itself since the quality of the game reached out all the way to Nintendo in Japan. I never expected that to happen. However, including him in Smash is a step too far in my mind considering what the game has stood for throughout all these years. It's a Nintendo party first and foremost with very few exceptions. These exceptions are reserved to characters that represent our medium. Shovel Knight is only a year old and has only been in one game that isn't even Nintendo-exclusive. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Same here, for Shovel Knight at least. The anti-Shovel Knight brigade is surprisingly douchey. I want him in because I'm a fan, but also now because I want to see them eat crow.

Surprisingly douchey? Where?

If one character is coming (just to be pessimistic) and it isn't the dream character they want it's not a surprise that people would be disappointed. However all I've seen it people give reasons as to why they'd rather have someone else (is that really a bad thing to do?) not anyone being obnoxious about it.

And wanting a character just so others "eat crow"? Who's the douchy one now?

Well good thing he'd be optional DLC so you can keep your roster SK free if you so wish.

Why do so many people want Shovel Knight in smash? He is a one year old character that came out on almost every system. He's made by an indie company and has no Nintendo legacy.

Just because he captures some old school gaming feel doesn't mean he belong in Smash, a series that celebrates Nintendo's history which he has no part in.

I think he can work if you see him as representing the Indie community at large, which by it's very nature, won't have a huge icon

well you aren't forced to add him to the roster.

heh, Shovel Knight will always either be the first or last person you fight in All Star, depending on the version.

Sorry Greninja!

yea, viewing him more as an indie rep and not just as Shovel Knight makes his inclusion make a lot more sense.

They like the character and game? Splatoon is only a few months old and I'd be happy seeing them in Smash.

I disagree with this but I'd be curious to see how you feel about Pac Man's inclusion.

Also Shovel Knight is just a great character that would fit well into the Smash aesthetic/playstyle.

Really don't understand how this "cheapens" the game to anyone, but alright.

Because the indie community deserves a rep imo
