Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

You know I always wanted to write about Guest characters and if it's a good or a bad thing. For instance I don't want another guest character in MKX but looking at things maybe another movie character gets in. And that's another thing why movie characters? MK is all about gore so why not a game character that gores it up like they did with Kratos. Anyway I do feel like it cheapens a lot of games when there's to much other characters. I mean when the FOUR third party character were announced for Playstation All-stars people complained about it. But if Smash might get it's FIFTH character it's okay? I think there's an interesting thing to talk about here.

I totally get where you're coming from. I like guest characters but I don't want stuff like MK or Killer Instinct to get swamped with them. Although, I was around for the old All-Stars GAF threads and most of the characters people wanted were third party (Crash, Lara, Cloud, etc) I think people were more upset with who the third party characters were instead of how many there were.

All of this feels like it's pointing toward DLC. If this is true and we get new characters soon, I'll be pretty hyped. If not, we still have a ton of characters to play with right now so nothing is really lost. I'm optimistic, though.

Yeah I was just about both sides. One wanting guys like Cloud and Lara and others saying Sony doesn't have enough characters to fill the roster which is bullshit.
But it really bothers me the most in smash and MKX. Ever since the Kombat Pack 2 talk started more people want to see a movie character then someone like Noob and I don't like it. I also hope KI doesn't have this to bad because no matter how cool Rash is it still feels out of place.

Not to mention the roster sizes are completely different

I'm not a Smash guy but I am so psyched for YCG at the thought of the excitement they must have over the Amiibo and the inclusion in Smash, if either or both are real.

FWIW, Shovel Knight is at least as known to gamers as characters like Palutena and others on the Smash roster are.

Well we already know for sure the former is real. The latter remains to be seen.

True, but Palutena is a Nintendo character so she is immune to the "relevance" argument. Same goes to Dark Pit, the Awakening characters, Greninja, etc.

On a level that surely no one at Nintendo is actually concerned with but is still interesting to think about, Shovel Knight kind of represents the Yin to Mighty No. 9's Yang. People who were sorta only kind of known but didn't have a big name attached asked for money to make a retro love letter to Capcom-style NES games even though none of them ever worked at Capcom. The game gets delayed and they're extremely apologetic and communicative and want everyone to understand why. Then the game comes out, it's amazing, there's significant DLC planned for free, and they do well enough to the point where they can publish the game on their own.

It's like the total opposite of MN9.

It's only the opposite if MN9 comes out and is bad, which is unlikely.

It could be a mock up. If Shovel Knight is in Smash, they wouldn't give it away by showing the Amiibo with the Smash logo and stuff.

Unless the people saying "mock up" are afraid they're wrong about saying SK in Smash and that what we see IS the final box/amiibo design that was leaked early by accident. Guess we'll find out tonight when they officially unveil the Shovel Knight amiibo.

Even if they unveil it now, if they're only announcing the amiibo and not him being in Smash right now, they'd probably change the boxart later when it's actually announced to avoid giving it away ahead of time

Sure, but I honestly couldn't care less if the rumor is real or fake. If it is, great, a new likely fun character to play in Smash. If it isn't, I will keep hoping for Dixie/RH rep.

Having its own box design doesn't mean the amiibo itself couldn't work with the game.
Similar to the Super Mario Bros. Yoshi's Woolly World and Splatoon series.

What if it just doesn't ever come out in the first place?

Yeah, I think there are going to be two amiibo for shovel knight. This one paid for and sold by YCG, and one sold by Nintendo as part of the Smash series. A smash amiibo for shovel knight wouldn't come out for a long time anyway, just think of how we're just getting mewtwo let alone Ryu.

I really like the idea of Shovel Knight coming to Smash. Even though I have yet to play the game, Shovel Knight appears to be a unique character that would certainly be an interesting addition.

It's great that Nintendo continues to approve development on Smash 4. When I initially heard rumors of Shovel Knight being added, I started thinking how Nintendo could turn Smash into more of a "service", such as Dota or LoL, instead of a game that we have to wait 4-5 years for.

For example, they could take Smash 4 in its current state and essentially port it to their next generation platform (NX). Every few months, they could release new items, costumes, custom moves, and stages - and every year, another 2-3 characters could be added to the game. Smash would be ever growing, with dozens of costumes for each character, dozens and dozens of stages, and a continual stream of added characters and content.

Best thing if this is true, is Shovel Knight becoming playable while Rayman remains a trophy. What a slap to Ubisoft's face hahahaha.

(I'd actually welcome Rayman, still hilarious)

Bomberman will never get in, he doesn't even fit in with the other characters.

I wouldn't mind seeing a lot more third-parties next time around, though ideally not so many that we lose out on first-party reps.

Sonic
Snake (eh)
Mega Man
Pac-Man
Ryu
Rayman
Professor Layton
Shovel Knight
Bayonetta
Phoenix Wright

Assuming that Layton and Shovel Knight are real for DLC, it'd be only three newcomer third-party reps.

Honestly, this kind of talk just reinforces my desire for the next Smash to be Smash 4.5. All of the characters and stages and modes and trophies and shit from the 3DS and Wii U games, plus like 20 new characters and 20 new stages and other new shit. I just think it's a really good way to avoid the diminishing returns issue (the more characters we have, the harder the work is). This way, you don't have to create a new engine and you don't have to recreate nearly 60 characters.

There's no way we are getting that many newcomers in the next Smash (5 or 4.5), not without cuts :P And personally I don't see any of the playable characters in Smash 4 being cut, so... But what do I know?

I was doing a thing, I just picked Bomberman because he's the one I want the least lol

That's what I figured lol.

I dunno, wouldn't it save so much time and energy if they didn't have to recreate the roster like they've done with the past four games? I have to imagine that there's a pretty comparable level of effort put into that as there is to programming in the newcomers. That could severely trim down the amount of time that is needed for development and allow them to focus on new content.

So here's something interesting. Those three Smash kiosks that were "confirmed" to be at Nintendo's PAX booth? Not there - at least not yet. I just finished setting up at our booth, and I walked by Nintendo's on my way out. It's all Super Mario Maker and Splatoon kiosks, with a Xenoblade Chronicles X video display.

I also saw a banner advertising what games can be seen and played at Nintendo's booth, and only those three games were listed.

More than one conclusion can be drawn from this, but take it as you will!

Hmm, very interesting. Thanks for the update!

Now I'm curious, was Smash actually confirmed to be there before hand?

Could just be a low priority.

Not saying it is, but it could be.
