Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

What would Shovel Knight's stage be? The Tower of Fate? The village?

There's just so much smoke and too many coincidences at this point, I'll be shocked if nothing happens Monday.

-scheduled maintenance during prime time playing hours that match the time of day from the last DLC release.
-1 year anniversary for smash 4
-MGSV eve
-PAX
-all the shovel knight stuff
-all the recent DLC promoting from Nintendo
-sudden activation (as in a few days ago) of the info-ticker at the top of the smash wii u menu, mostly promoting DLC
-my bones ache
I doubt MGSV's release has anything to do with Smash. As for the rest, we would have heard from Nintendo by now if we were gonna get more DLC on Monday, either during the Nindies event or a reveal of a Smash Direct this week. While I'm not taking a stance on if the Shovel Knight rumor is real or not, I honestly don't think that we'll get any DLC characters this coming week. That being said, I would love to be wrong.

Totally forgot about that. I like it.

We are definitely not getting new DLC this week, what I am hoping for is the announcement of new DLC. ^^

What would make perfect sense...

Wolf, Pichu and Shovel Knight.

Brawl veteran (Lucas), Melee veteran (Roy), and third party (Ryu)

The last one dropped randomly on us after a direct. If they are not sure about what to do about directs since Iwata's passing, maybe they are just gonna drop them on us out of nowhere like they tried to do with Roy/Ryu before it spoiled.

I've never played Shovel Knight but am thinking of getting the retail version in October. I was all set for the PS4 version, but is the Wii U version getting extra content now compared to PS4? Do they perform the same?

They perform the same, yes. The only differences are in features (& the Wii U's Miiverse, Amiibo, & GamePad functionality).

I always worry that the stage Sakurai (+ others) choose will be a "safe" choice. Does anyone really expect that the stage will be anything other than, say, a plains setting (ie the first level)?

Pac-Land and (I'd argue anyway) Dr. Wily's Castle weren't the safest choices for representation of Pac-Man and Mega Man IMO.

PS4/3/Vita version only has Kratos from God of War as a cool boss I think.

Im gonna try and jump in on the retail Wii U version to see what all the hub bub is about.

Agree on Pac-Land, disagree on Wily Castle (its theme after all is practically the Mega Man series theme).

But we look at other series and we see...

Mario - A lot of green, plains-like levels
Donkey Kong - Jungle levels
Yoshi - How many Yoshi's Island levels do we need?
Pokemon - Pokemon Stadiums

I worry about that too, but sometimes Sakurai and his team pick non-first level places for stages, like New Pork City (Mother 3), Arena Ferox (Waifu Emblem Awakening), Kalos/Unova Pokémon Leagues, etc. Though yeah, most of the time they play extremely safe and boring with stage picks.

Pokemon - Pokemon Stadiums
Mario - Paper Mario, Rainbow Road, Mario Galaxy (with gravity gimmicks!)
Zelda - Spirit Train
Pokemon - Both 3DS choices go against the norm for Poke stages in Smash
Kid Icarus - Reset Bomb Forest
Wario - Gamer
F-Zero - SNES Mute City
Earthbound - Magicant
Star Fox - Orbital Assault, a stage from a decade old, not particularly popular game that represents the finale fight of said-game

There are a lot of boring choices, yes, but I feel sometimes it comes down to perspective; there were some very weird, oddball choices for stages this time around when it came to representing characters. I'd also say having the final stage of Mega Man 2, even if it's 'iconic', is still more interesting a choice than just the typical futuristic cityscapes most Mega Man games start off with. Windy Hill for Sonic was just a roundabout way of both referencing a Nintendo-only Sonic game and having a stage that still looked like Green Hill Zone (and could include the Genesis-era animals), but I'd personally have gone with something Colors-related since it's a way better game and most of its levels look distinct from the rest of Smash's stage lineup.

I'd kill for a minecart-focused DKC stage or a Metroid stage that wasn't just lava tho.

Despite Iwata's passings, and Nintendo Directs probably not coming back anytime soon, I can still see Sakurai doing a direct-esque presentation on new Smash content like he did pre-e3 the day NWC happened.

Edit: And if he announces a series 2 of Smash amiibo where it's the alternate trophies of characters, wallets will cry, and Nintendo better use the 3DS versions of the alt. trophies, cause this' Wario's 3DS alt trophy

yeah and where is it now

I was really hoping Metroid would get a second stage like Skytown or Sanctuary Fortress in Smash 4 after they showed off Dark Samus to offset having yet another lava-themed level with Pyrosphere, but in the end the actual Prime stage it got in Brawl got axed in favor of MORE LAVA.
I find Norfair really fun with groups to be fair.

3DS Smash should've had something from Fusion or Metroid 2 as well, but DK/Metroid/Fox/Yoshi/Wario/Pikmin got fucked over in general there.

Have patience, it will come back as DLC eventually.

Sanctuary Fortress would be such a great looking stage :D And that music.

Besides the Ruins Test from the picture above, the 3DS version Metroid stage could have been the Sector 5 from Fusion, with Nightmare as a hopefully not obnoxious stage element.

We're still hours away from the same time frame they started announcing the stuff for the last DLC pack. And that's assuming they bother dragging it out over several days. I don't see why they wouldn't just do one and done for DLC, announce it early Monday and then release it late Monday (or the night before and then the next morning for Japan).

The Tweets every day showing off another Mii costume was boring and stupid, they don't need to do it again.

Yeah... Sadly, although I think the Explodatorium'd be a cool level, I just assumed we were getting Plains of Passage, or Pridemoor Keep at the most. Either way, the gimmick would merely be that it's 8-Bit aesthetically. Plus, since I'm cynical about future stages, I'm just going to assume that any DLC stages that aren't from a previous Smash game are going to have some obnoxious stage hazard, and that there isn't a Hazard Toggle incoming.

But if the DLC was anything significant, they would have hyped it up by now with a Smash Direct or something along those lines. If we do get any DLC on Monday, it'll likely just be Mii Costumes.

The Smash Directs didn't involve Iwata. And even if we don't get a Direct anytime soon, they'd still be hyping up the DLC right now if it was anything major.

Why?

The Lucas/Ryu/Roy update wasn't really "hyped" by them. They kept it low key until the Direct actually happened, reinforcing that they were only discussing Lucas and Miiverse.

I just don't see why they couldn't just announce DLC the night before or earlier in the day...

RIP amiibo collectors

I suppose I am a bit biased against Sakurai for some of his stage decisions, so yeah, I'll not take away due credit - he has made some really cool stages. Nevertheless, Metroid stages are (usually) lava or acid. Typically, stages don't go into risky territory. There are certainly exceptions, but there are very few stages where I'd say "wow, I can't believe they'd do that! How utterly bold~"

Palutena's temple is the biggest let down of a stage for me. It's a cool idea. But there's so many random elements. Feels pieced together rather than expertly crafted.

But we at least knew about the Direct a week in advance.

Lava/Acid or a big monster that changes the stage's layout.

There are no exceptions for Metroid.

Planet Zebes 64: Acid
Brinstar: Acid
Brinstar Depths: Giant Monster that changes the stage layout
Norfair: Lava (same as acid)
Orpheon: Giant Monster that changes the stage layout
Pyrosphere: Giant Monster that changes the stage layout

Within that, there are minor difference. Ridley is a boss that fights you, and Parasite Queen only indirectly changes the stage. But still, it's essentially the same trope.

Imagine if they tore the stage apart and did some minor theme work to change them to other series stages! How great would that be? Get an extra Zelda stage, get an extra Metroid stage, get an extra Donkey Kong stage, etc.

Sounds like most of Smash 4's stages, unfortunately. I'm not sure what happened to the stage designer, but the stages have just been getting progressively worse since Melee. Whoever designed Gaur Plains should be fired.

So the "update shown before means big update" ... when we shall have announcement of that ?
Monday before or sunday ?

Biggest let down is not allowing the secret taunt on the omega version

It feels like Palutena's Temple and Great Cave Offensive were originally going to be Smash Run levels for the Wii U version but they decided on 2 separate, exclusive modes.

Admittedly, I love Brinstar Depths with Kraid. I remember unlocking that stage in Melee and getting all sorts of giddy.

Also, I for one hope that if Shovel Knight is in, we get a Propeller Knight-themed stage. I'm all about Propeller Knight.

Brinstar Depths is definitely a guilty pleasure for me. Melee wasn't as proficient at having unique stages as 64 was, but 64 had nine stages that felt completely different from one another so it's very hard to compare. Brinstar Depths was definitely a great effort to create variety though.

Ironically the stage that would've been brilliant in 8-Player Smash (Jungle Hyjinx) is fucked over by apparently being too hardware intensive for 8 players.

Actually, Gamer, Garden of Hope, Mushroom Kingdom U... There's a ton of reasonably-sized stages that would work well in 8-player but you can only play their Omega variants. It'd be nice if Smash 5 rather than getting even goofier with its gimmicks makes its levels with player-number-parity in mind.

I have to wonder how much of the point of Palutena's Temple was to be another Temple stage, but without being able to properly grasp what made Temple good (for some). And shit, I guarantee Temple haters would choose it for a tournament over Palutena's Temple, haha.

I imagine a Shovel Knight stage would be based on King Knight's level, since it's the one that appears the most in promotional materials.

Indeed. Great Cave Offensive could have been so-much better. I absolutely loathe it at this point, all-the-while wishing that it could have been something more akin to Hyrule Temple.

Well Smash 4 has proven that they're not too interested in making good stages. But then again, Little Mac's stage is mostly cool.
