Yeah but the websites don't give a shit they just want clicks. The problem is that a lot of morons take it seriously and it gains momentum until it's "accepted" as truth by the masses.

The worst part is, a good number will just forward the story or run with the story without even watching the video.

Quite frankly, I don't have time to be concerned with what Taylor swift is doing. She's self important, and her apple stunt left a really bad taste in my mouth as it is.

edit:

The lyrics in that song are terrible.

Fucking lol at the idea of TAYLOR SWIFT channeling or promoting white colonialism. A 25 year old country/pop star. 1989 is a jam and a half of an album, though.

Probably not that she's channeling it but that it just happens so naturally that no one questions the filming process. Like, did anyone say, "Should we do this?"

I honestly think that part of it is that, in light of recent events involving her, the media feels like they can finally start taking shots at her (right or wrong). Like, I don't see her getting as much of a pass from them here on.

Well... I wouldn't be surprised. Pop Gaf is a garbage community. Surprised Evilore hasn't bleached and scrubbed it out of existence.

Given the publicity, I'd say they should be answering that question with an emphatic "Yes, we should" if they're looking out for their own interests.

I dont care about this. Plenty of videos shot in America without white people in them and not just hood shit either. I didnt know a certain geographic location made you obligated to include the prevailing ethnic group of that region.

How I'm feeling on this too

For fuck sake....at what point does this just becomes recognized as a big seriously pathetic clusterfuck that just keeps getting worse and worse.
This kind of shit really hurts the progress and reality of racial issues.
No, it doesn't, unless you're just looking for excuses to not give a shit.

"We almost won, but then a few websites got distracted by a Taylor Swift video."

Pretty good pop tune. The video is pretty meh but I am not seeing the race thing.

It is not really a video about Africa as much as it is a video about Hollywood romance crap.

It was just a stupid romantic fantasy in her head that they were filming in some exotic part of Africa. While in reality, her and generic model guy were on some cheap back lot movie set standing in front of a matte painting. It fits with the title of the song; "Wildest Dreams".

Yeah, I get that that movie exists but in order for your analogy to hold up the footage establishing the location would have to be of Southern wildlife. Like, swamps, and alligators and shit. And if someone shot a period video that took place in a Southern swamp, no I don't think it would be rife with racial issues.

Edit: I'm not gonna go hard on defending TSwift even though I think it's a bit of an overreaction, personally. I get why people would feel this way.

You're missing the point. They're whitewashing the era, highlighting the beautiful/glamorous aspects of the time and place while omitting the elephant in the room - just as movies of that era did. Except we should know better now.

It's a Taylor Swift video

how many of us would have even known about it if not for this thread or the linked articles

Yeah - it's Taylor Swift. One of the most successful people in the industry, whose videos gets tens of millions of views. If not hundreds of millions. So to answer your question, probably a lot.

It's totally channeling colonialism but I'm sure no harm was intended and I'm not sure if harm was done.

...........it's a music video. The internet is getting so lame.

ALL THE PROCEEDS GO TO WILDLIFE CONSERVATION.

I'll gladly deal with it.

I get it, 'VIDEO SHOT IN AFRICA HAS NO AFRICANS' makes for an attention grabbing headline but it is really reaching if you watched the damn thing. Why would there be african people? They were foreigners shooting a movie in the middle of wildlife not in an African city. There were some African crew members on the set of the fictional movie they were shooting by the way.

It wasn't what I was expecting to be but I thought they fit a great story in 3 and a half minutes and ALL proceeds going to African Wildlife Conservation is awesome.

I can't even say I'm stunned by the pathetic level "think pieces" go to insert themselves in pop culture these days. The Daily Dot article in the OP is trash - almost as bad as this childish song. The immediate jump to colonialism accusations...about 1930s Hollywood film being shot in Africa - I don't even know what to say. Not to mention the revival of even more baseless attacks on the imagery in Shake If Off. It must be exhausting to sit around looking for things to be offended by.

Side note: this is now the third Swift song I have heard. Trash. The lyrics are bad, it's a basic pop song...there's nothing noteworthy about anything I've heard from her.

Society's inability to hold artistic mediums accountable for perpetuating problematic tropes is a real problem though.

uhhhhhhh. nah you should let them do what they want to do. New age trigger police bloggers are what need to be ignored.

I didn't realize people's personal extrapolations were synonymous with proof of explicit advocacy there of.

People should me more angry that she's repackaging the same song over and over again. The racism is just a red herring.

Bjergsen is the greatest midlane in the world
In addition, how dare she have the gall to send all the proceeds from this music video to wild animal conservation efforts through the African Parks Association of America? Racist.
This is inherent to the problem though. Save Africa the land mass, but not the people starving, struggling, and dying on it.

it's more "problematic" than "racist;" kind of a misdemeanor offense imo. the video is just dumb, thoughtless, vapid garbage.

You mean like...every pop artist? There is such a hard on for Taylor Swift on GAF lately, and it's bizarre. Almost as big as the sudden hatred for Rondo Rousey. But the weird thing is how many people hate on Swift for being a smart businesswoman, like somehow you can't be an artist and want to make money.

What's truly shocking is that she completely jacked Lana Del Rey's look, style and ACTUAL MUSIC.

I mean listen to this and then check out this. Pretty blatant.

Not to mention the complete jacking of her look from the Young and Beautiful video.

Not the first time she's copied Lana, but it's definitely the most obvious. Basically every review of the song mentions Lana too, rofl

It's inevitable, get too big, too popular and people can't wait to tear you down. It's a never-ending cycle.

Uh her look was paying homage to her grandmother, Marjorie Finlay.

Jesus Christ. I remember when her "I thought you were Trouble" video pretty much hijacked Lana's ride video, but THIS is just a complete ripoff. she's a fake!
