This is how I saw the video too. None of the stuff in Africa was real; it was a hopeful dream that didn't come true. The vid even cuts to that point just as she sings "in our wildest dreams" or somesuch, and it all looks cheap and no one is happy.
Which honestly, I kinda dig. Song was alright as well.

My biggest issue with the video is that swift and the male lead have zero chemistry. I feel like they should cast dudes that have a little more "character" as her love interest.
As for the criticism - I understand it. I just think its a little hamfisted. Doesn't mean it's not valid though.

The looks are both golden age hollywood throwbacks. They're classic aesthetics that don't belong to any single woman in her early 20s.

Perhaps, had "problematic" not been bastardized to the point of meaninglessness, and had Tumblr-style social justice think pieces not forgotten the integral notion of "art for art's sake", people might be more willing to give accusations of racism, sexism, etc. a little more latitude.

That's just meaningless drivel to dismiss what's always been dismissed. I love how people manage to fault "armchair civil rights activists" and their supposed trigger happy responses towards "injustices" for society's reluctance to buy into accusations of racism, sexism, etc - when in actuality - they're just being used as a scapegoat to legitimize the belittling of those viewpoints. It's a lose-lose situation. People are going to cry "false positive" when people bring up anything of this sort, and they're going to outright ignore it when it's omitted from a public dialog. The end result is the same either way.

Well, I would call myself someone who strongly desires to see redress for the sins of the past, but I must admit there's a part of me that reflexively rolls his eyes a bit when he sees accusations like this, at least when it comes to art, because I've seen far more in the way of poor, artistically deliterate criticism on such matters.
