Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

I think this was asked earlier in the thread, but I didn't see any responses to it.

Does everyone have kind of twitchy daytime shadows on Mother Base? Mine seem to tick like a clock as the sun moves. Its kind of awkward.

This is on max settings with hbao+

Unfortunately I think this is just how a lot of games with real-time shadows handle them, as it vastly cuts down on the processing power required. I agree that it's distracting, but I don't think it's a bug.

Do you have to turn off ingame SSAO when you turn on HBAO+ in the drivers?
Yes

That's how the dynamic Sun works, happens in GTA games as well.

Hey guys, I was trying to look up if the damage denuvo does to ssd's has been confirmed. All I see are speculation and debunks but people seem to still despise this thing.

I dunno if the performance on my PC is great or not lol!
4790k@4.2ghz
980GTX
16GB@2133mhz
Everything is on highest settings and res is 1440p DSR'd. I haven't got an fps display so I can't be sure but although it often seems 60fps I am certain there are times it drops to as low as 30fps. And it really shouldn't. The game looks nice but it certainly isn't a graphics powerhouse like Witcher 3 or DA:I both of which I can run with most things at max and 1440p or there abouts (whatever the next one down is). So I wonder what may be causing the frame rate drop. Windows 10?
Better get an fps counter up so I can be sure.

If you are running the game on steam, you can turn on a fps display in the steam settings menu.

Has anyone ever had to deal with nvidia control panel crashing? I want to enable HBAO but everytime I open up control panel it just pops up the "stopped working" and tells me to close it. I've never had any problems with nvidia control panel until now. I also tried doing another clean install of everything and still not working.

I googled some solution saying to use process monitor and it doesn't even show the control panel when I filter it and try opening it.

Q6600 while not really comparable to new processors still a beast. I actually just upgraded to a 5930K from a Q6600.

Mind-blowing to me that MGS5 runs considerably better on my pc than quite a few new unreal engine 3 games on their lowest settings (Dirty Bomb, Thief come to mind). I keep putting off the cpu/motherboard upgrade in hopes to skip ddr3 ram altogether, but it sure seems like cpu progress has stagnated to the point where it would probably be considerably more cost effective to get an old 2500k at this point.

That 6 core Intel sure is tempting though.

Image doesn't want anymore so here is the direct link: http://i3.minus.com/ibaaxsUuuMs0aW.png

I still have to tweak a little, but didn't drop below 55fps so far. The majority of the time it has been at 60.

i7-4790K @ 4.00Ghz
GTX 980
16 Gb Ram 1866 Mhz

So runs fine for me. I will play around a little more to get it to 60 thoug. There is enough room to lower the resolution - lol.

Make sure you are injecting the glorious HBAO+.

Anyone have good recommended key bindings? I tried M&KB in GZ but the default seemed like a mess to me so I just went with a gamepad.

Depends on how many mouse buttons you have, and if you can reconfigure your mouse to mimic keyboard bindings. I haven't purchased TPP yet, but on GZ my configuration varied wildly from stock (which you are correct, stock is a mess). I have 8 functions mapped to my mouse, which helps mitigate a lot of the finger gymnastics you have to pull off with the default keybindings.

Regardless of bindings, It's pretty annoying how limited the mouse is in this interface. Can't use the mouse to select weapons, can't use it in menus....I'm starting to think maybe they actually coded the game WITH a controller, and their programmers don't actually use mice.

Game looks really good at 4k.

4930k @ 4.5ghz
16GB RAM
Titan X
Win 8.1

Settings at Extra High except for Post Processing and Effects (High). Volumetric Fog and HBAO+ enabled. I think my fps was in the 40s iirc.

This is the first game I've played on my PC, since getting my 970 card, that's not a MMO and thus would actually be a test of the card's performance. I was a bit worried my processor would bottleneck it (a first gen i7).

Game runs perfectly at max settings on 1080. So good.

Have a similar system, i7-4790K/4ghurtz, gtx 980 ti and 32gb ram.
What resolution are you playing at? My current monitor is just 1080P so hopefully I'll be able to play at 60 fps with all the bells and whistles enabled.

Really good to hear it's a good PC build. Just downloaded the new Arkham Knight patch and it seems to be running great, but too little too late. I've only got eyes for snake...

If anyone has a PC key to sell, please pm me. :3

Is anyone else having horrible framedrops when there's a bunch of dust getting kicked up (usually from gunfire)? It seriously drops down past 20fps.

Go aggro a helicopter or something with a minigun and hide behind a rock as it shoots you. This is the only issue I'm having with framerates otherwise. Hope it can be fixed in a patch :(

i7-4930K @ 4.4GHz
32GB 2133 RAM
2 x GTX 980 (SLI disabled)

Quoting myself here (sorry if this isn't allowed) for a potential solution. Is anyone else experiencing this?

It seems like my image doesn't work anymore. But i was talking about 4k! I had shadows at high, post processing at low (to get rid of fxaa) and AO at high. The rest was maxed out.

For the time I tested it out it only dropped as low as 55fps, that was for around an hour. I couldn't play more today.

Can anyone help me with nvidia control panel? I set the AO to quality for HBAO+, applied, everything is saved but nothing works in game. I've tried loads of the other settings to see if anything works but nothing does. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

Playing at 30fps locked with absolutely zero drops with vsync on and everything on high on my laptop at 1366x768

i7 2.6 ghz
8gigs ram
Nvidia GT750m 2gigs

I can do 60 fps but I didn't stick with it because it was making my laptop run spicy hot, also when I played at locked 60 it caused blue screens.

Still extremely pleased with the performance

Oh. Then I should be good at 1080P hah. Normally shadow quality is the first thing I drop when I encounter frame drops but the difference between high and med in mgs5 is quite staggering. Low at 55 fps seems to be fine unless the game's fps constantly fluctuates between 55 fps - 60 fps

I download the game till 80% yesterday, now I turn on the pc, open steam and is in 0% -____- this is some bullshit.

Longer loading times and daily rewards that strike me as fairly useless. Also GZ save import and FOB.

Must've been because patch got released between that. That's some shit luck there.

Same thing happened here, except that my "downloads" folder in steamapps was already 20GB big so maybe 5% were missing. Created MGS_TPP in steamapps/common/ copied the data there and tried to install the game. Steam recognized the old data...and deleted all of it anyways. Yay.

I didn't have a frame rate display turned on, but it definitely felt like it was holding 60 the whole the time. I'm usually really sensitive to frame rate drops.

Do keep in mind that I'm using a G-Sync monitor, which allows for variable frame rates without stuttering or tearing. It may have dropped some and I just didn't notice it.

Just for reference, I'm using an i5 2500k @ 4.2 Ghz, 16GB 1600 Mhz RAM, a GTX 970 and I'm playing the game on an SSD.

Ok. I'm playing on a 1080p HDTV. My setup is an i5 4590, 8gb 1600 Mhz DDR3, a GTX 970, and playing off of a 7200 RPM HDD.

The game runs vastly much better than witcher 3.
If you have any fps drops at all then lower effects from extra high to high.

Witcher 3 is a hot mess on my gtx970, pityful frameskipping garbage (can't be bothered playing it like this) , meanwhile MGS5 frametimes are perfect.

I am going to blow your mind:

UE 3 was always shit
If there was an ue3 hating club I would join it. Fuck that engine so much.

How do I activate water tesselation? Despite everything being on Extra High (except for Shadows, which are on High), water doesn't look as nicely tesselated as they were on the trailers.

hmmm interesting, my mgs download folder is 21gb big (steam says is 9% complete) should I wait?

| 4770K @ 4.5 Ghz | 16GB DDR3 2400 MHz | Asus DC2 GTX 780 Ti | Samsung 840 Pro 256GB | Samsung 840 EVO 500GB |

All settings maxed and HBAO+ at quality

At 1440p i get drops down to 48 (even worse during cutscenes) and it's hardly 60 fps stable and at 1080p it's around 55-60fps sometimes even lower (haven't had cutscenes at that resolution yet)

Intel i5-5200U
Intel HD 5500 (Integrated graphics)

- Everything on High expect for Post Processing
- 30 frame lock
Runs so smooth

Bit of a strange one.

Core i5 4440
Intel HD4600 Graphics
8GB DDR3 1600

I can run Ground Zeroes at 720p with everything off at a playable framerate, does anyone have a comparable performance graphics card could tell me if I could run TPP?

I got it on PS4 but it has decided to kill itself so I have to send it off for repair and I don't want some bellend spoiling the game for me so I need to play it any way I can.

I'd love to know this too. I have last year's Haswell i5-4200U version of More_Badass's Broadwell i5-5200U CPU, and it wasn't so great with Ground Zeroes. However, I recently saw this: Apparently newer Intel drivers caused tangible performance gains in that game. So I'm thinking I might have hope with Phantom Pain.

Does anyone have Haswell-class graphics (HD 4400/4600) and the game? I'd love to hear how it runs. I'm not picky, I'd ideally just want it to play similarly to last gen, so close to 30fps, whatever the settings are equivalent to (anyone?) and a similar resolution (I think last gen was 992 x 720). If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it!

Amazing how well this runs on my fairly long in the tooth i5-2400 / GTX 680

Only playing at 1080p, but it's solid 60fps with almost everything at Extra High, except for those points when it's suddenly 5fps, but apparently everyone gets those :D

I can run Witcher 3 and MGS V on my 970 nearly maxed out (hairworks off, medium shadows) at 60 fps, but W3 is a MUCH better looking game. The environments in MGS V are just bland...sand/dirt and the same rock texture all over. There is just nothing going on. I'm not hating on the game, but there is a reason everyone is saying the game has such good performance...there's no reason it shouldn't run well.

I'm running sli 980s so I just set everything to max and am running at 4k dsr (20% smoothing) to 1080p tv. Looks pretty good and runs 60fps with some dips.

Besides turning off ssao and adding hbao+ instead, is there anything else I can do to further improve image quality?
