Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

i7 4790k

8gb ram

I was getting a locked 60 with everything on extra high until I got into villages, so I had to turn some settings down to high. I also turned off volumetric clouds.

Doesn't that get rid of DOF too, though?

\_(ツ)_/¯ and nothing of value was lost.

So I take it this is a good port?
The engine is brilliant on PC, performance is flawless and there's no graphical bugs.
It is capped to 60fps though which sucks if you have a 75/85/120/144hz monitor.

There's a few missing settings (why no individual bloom, dof, fxaa settings, instead they're all under post process setting) but otherwise it's great.
The UI doesn't shrink when you downsample so +1 for that
There's no mouse controls in the UI (keyboard only) so -1 for the lazyness there

Gameplay controls work well with k/m so +1 again.

9/10 for the engine guys
5/10 for the UI guys

does anyone else's game consistently crash/throw up errors on exit? Other than that it's run fine for me and I played for like 7 hours straight last night.

The only problem i've had so far, is the absurd loading times, and they seem related to playing in online mode, since when i went offline, they became pretty normal.

Also, in the create an emblem screen, my framrate slowed to a crawl (i'm talking like 5fps).
What's up with that?

Other than that, flawless stuff, especially stunning with HBAO.

It looks the same for me when using binoculars. Surely this can't be intentional?

Probably not a wanted effect, but the engine does have trouble with some far away textures. This was in GZ too.

I'm getting pretty long loading times even on a SSD... Especially when using the mother base menu ... It takes a loooong time sometimes to bring up the R&D menu.

As i said try to play in offline mode and see if it gets better.
it did for me, since apparently the game was having problems connecting to the Konami servers (which it does, every 2 seconds).

Are you online? The servers are being hammered and it slows the menus down, it tries to connect always when you switch menu for some reason.

DOF has its own setting in TPP. In GZ it did not.

Also from GZ they moved interrogate to 1,2,3,4,etc rather than ←↑→↓. That was my biggest complaint.

The only thing I feel is needs is a screenshot for checkpoints so you know what you're going back to.

I usually hate DoF, but Kojima makes use of it for artistic reasons during cutscenes.
Some of them look absolute ass without the effect

Any way to hack in / isolate the FXAA?

Setting post processing to high makes some night time bases with lots of lights run sub 60, I'm pretty sure the AA isn't causing that, but it's embedded in the post process settings along with some more expensive stuff that I'd be happy to lose.

Man, I was worried this wouldn't fare so well on my FX6300, turns out a bump from the standard 3.5Ghz to 4.5 will be enough to keep it locked at 60 on Max settings.
Now I just need money to buy a new heatsink/fan..and the game :lol

That's 3 super optimized open world games releasing in close proximity (Witcher 3, Mad Max and this). Get rekt Arkham Knight

Hey guys, since this is the only topic specific to the PC version of MGSV, I'll ask a somewhat off-topic question again in the hopes someone has a solution.

Is there any way to swap the triggers and shoulder buttons of the dual shock 3? It's not native support and you can't change buttons in game, but maybe theres a solution via third party software I'm not aware?

With Ground Zeroes you could modify what effects each preset turns on and since the TPP settings file only has exactly what is in the game menus, you'll have to wait for mod tools to be able to do that. I plan to modify FXAA out and replace it with ReShade SMAA.

Seriously though this game can often be really pretty.

Too bad there just isn't much variety in the game's slice of Afghanistan.

Does anyone else have as much trouble sticking to cover as I am? I find a flat surface and ram Snake's head into it and he just won't stick, and yet when I try to run around corners he'll stick to every wall I come across.

That's a shame, well thanks for the quick answer

Would be nice to crank up the SSR too. There's subtlety, and then there's, you have to try so hard to see it that what's the point :p

Edit:

Running on moderate hardware and the game overall runs seriously well. Logged around 15 hours so not nearly enough time to have played in all graphical scenarios but so far the nvidia guide recommending the 970 for 2560x1440 seems maybe a little over cautious?

GTX680 4GB (stock)
3930k (stock 3.2GHz)

hitting 60fps 99% of the time; rain and large bases at night drop to mid 50s, but dropping some settings to correct that, i'd still consider it around a "very high" setting and the game still looks amazing.

Saying that, from some videos I remember some quite dense foresty areas, hope I don't eat my words when i get to that part of the game

Is anyone else having horrible framedrops when there's a bunch of dust getting kicked up (usually from gunfire)? It seriously drops down past 20fps.

Go aggro a helicopter or something with a minigun and hide behind a rock as it shoots you. This is the only issue I'm having with framerates otherwise. Hope it can be fixed in a patch :(

This seems to happening to me as well :V

It's slightly better than in GZ, but it's still shit. Cover systems that rely on you pushing up against the wall instead of pressing a button fucking suck.

Yeah, it's terrible. I would rather use a button like in MGS4.

Anyone else experience major issues with the emblem maker on PC?

I get an unbreakable 60 FPS with this game, but when I went in to make an Emblem, the game dropped to single digit FPS as I scrolled through the options. It was practically unusable.

Anyone else experience that?

Agreed. No dedicated button for cover also means you don't get any sweet animations for sliding into cover.

Some people don't like it, but Tomb Raider and The Last of Us have the best cover systems to date, imo. MGSV doesn't do buttonless cover well, so it should just use a button.

Just seeing if anyone has successfully been able to juggle two save files for this game... My friend is 3 hours in on my computer, and because it loads from the cloud and refuses to load if you disable cloud saving, it doesn't seem like I can put his save somewhere else on my computer.

What if he (or you) logs in with a different Steam account?

I like how the most recent Splinter Cells and Watch Dogs did it, personally.

Just out of curiosity, does Steam Library Sharing work with this game? I've never used it but if it does, I'd imagine he could have his own cloud save with his own steam account and combine that with his own Windows account, maybe that would work?

This port is amazing.

Have everything maxed out and running in 2715x1527 downsampled via the Nvidia tool to 1920x1080 and it still holds an extremely steady frame rate. I've still played through just the prologue and first mission, though.

The downsampling in particular does wonders for the aliasing in the game, which was quite bad when I first booted it up.

Loving the game, too. This is going to be a fun journey.

The GeForce experience suggested that I run it at 2517x1527 DSR on my GTX 970, but I didn't set it at that resolution for fear of a performance drop. You're saying that it still runs at 60fps or close?

Core I5 3570k @ 4,2GHz
12 gigs of RAM
GTX770 2GB

Running the game downsampled from 1440p at 1080p with everything set to high in fullscreen mode and it's been a very smooth experience so far. The GF experience app says I could go actually higher with some settings.

Also, does anyone know how exactly the GZ savegame importing works? Does the "download GZ savefile" thingy in the main menu work without having GZ installed on your machine, or do I have to redownload and install GZ first to get the backup of my save file from the STEAM cloud?

How would this work? He doesn't own the game, he's just playing it on my account because I'm one the one with a gaming PC.

Pretty sure local accounts can play any games that are currently installed. Or try Family Sharing if that doesn't work.

Xeon 1231v3
Gtx 980 ti

Running everything maxed at 4k with hbao+ at around 60fps. I don't really notice the dips, lucky that way.

I might move some settings down to lock at 60

Game seems to heat up my gigabyte gaming 980ti more than the witcher 3 though. Hits 85 sometimes, I'm alright with that though. Card is bios flashed with extra voltage running at 1500/8000

Anyone having trouble with the AMD Sapphire R9 280X? Most of the time my experience is flawless but every once in a while the screen distorts into lines, locks up, and I'm informed that the "Display driver has stopped working and recovered." I usually have to reboot my PC.

Is this related to the Phenom issue outlined in the OT? Please help!

What exactly do you lose by being offline, can I just log in, get my daily bonus and log out?? My loadings are like 5 seconds long on an SSD when in offline.

Also

I really want to disable DoF, but not if it affects cutscenes :(

It takes way too long to change the plane of focus :(

4790k @ 4.5Ghz
16Gb RAM
2x 970 OC SLI

Everything at max and HBAO+ in nvidia Control Panel.

60 FPS all the way at 1080p, which isn't that surprising.

I should look into DSR..

You filthy people and your hating on glorious DOF.

I thought the dof effect in the hospital intro was absolutely amazing. (and actually had a purpose)

In gameplay however it has no place. The game can't smell where i'm looking at on the screen so most of the time its application is just wrong, no use emulating a limiation to our vision just because. If we could have our eyes be able to focus an entire scene at once irl we would be ALL over that shit.
