The Taken King's Launch Rollout: 2.0 on the 8th w/ Crucible Preview, Raid on the 18th

This is going to take at least a day to download. Luckily for me, Tearaway Unfolded is out on Tuesday so I'll be distracted from Destiny for a little while.

Bungie likely wants to keep the content they are releasing now relevant. Anyone can go back and do the old raids. Also I really hope they don't upgrade year 1 loot at all. Keep the new stuff relevant. There's already updated exotics. That's enough.

What's the incentive of doing old raids? Everything Year 1 is obsolete once TTK comes out.

Maybe if you want to experience them?. Also the old raids still give you year 1 exotics some of which can be upgraded to year two. I'd rather bungie focus on the now and the future instead of retreading old raids.

So I've recently gotten back into Destiny, got up to lvl 20, beat the last main story mission
(I assume, the one with the heart in the sky and the 3 statues)
and I've really enjoyed my time with the game, to where I'm considering getting TTK.

This has probably been answered, but is TTK available as an expansion DLC? I think I saw somewhere where I HAD to get the previous two expansions in order to just get the TK content. The other option is to just spend $60.00 again for a lot of content I already have?

I know people who did that, played but could not grind to level 26, from where the best parts of Destiny actually start. Vault of glass is so much better than the rest of the game is unreal, so is trials Osiris, and yet so many people have not played it.

The story is the crap training missions is the way I see it...

I already own vanilla Destiny + the two DLCs. Is it possible to pre-order or buy TTK content on a physical disc or is it only available as a $40 digital download add-on? And from what I've read, the so-called "exclusive" stuff (shaders, emotes, etc.) will then be another $20 upgrade making the total $60?

Even you buy a physical version of the game, you'll just be getting a code to unlock the expansion. The disc will install the vanilla version of the game and the expansion content is in a ~18 GB patch that everyone has to download to get online.

And yeah, there are 3 shaders, class items, and dances that come in the physical collector's edition you'd be able to buy separately for $20 on top of $40 for the expansion.

There is only a single version of the Destiny client, which will be updated to include TTK content next week regardless of if you purchase TTK (TDB and HOW worked the same way). You can't buy a disc of the TTK content.

Do you think the new leveling will be in 2.0 but just capped at 34 until TTK? Doesn't seem to make much sense to draw people back with a huge update but still not introduce what they feel is a much better progression system.

And this way you can still level up throughout the TTK story for the raid like they intend.

Edit: Oh nevermind, just saw Luke Smith's tweet. Not sure why I thought I heard they might not introduce leveling, blagh.

almost certainly, yes.

I've asked a couple times but never gotten a straight answer. I know light now reflects gear but does it have an effect on character stats still or is it just a guide?
Flavor text answers your question I believe.

I just noticed this game has some great concept art with things we have to see
like those Triangle peak ships

stuck at 59% my digital download was bigger than they said lol

so why is this slideshow so spoilerific?

I guess to peak your interest at the larger world. Concept art for The Taken was out there since before the vanilla launch, for example. File name was also called, "The Taken".

edit: Triangle ships are cool as hell, hope they make an appearance some day.

The raid is probably limited not by level but by light requirement.
Which is functionally the same thing, I suppose.

Normal mode raids are never at the level cap anyway. Vault of Glass was 26/30, Crita's End was 30/32 iirc
Ah right, I forgot about normal mode. I hope that they've just gotten rid of the level (or now light) disadvantage thing, because I don't think I'm interested in a raid with that as the primary mechanic anymore.

hope I am still alive when they get to the gas planets

so I'm guessing another large ship near Saturn since you don't have any rocks to walk on with Gas Giants

10 years shit I'll be old PS5 will be VR :(

Is there a description of the changes being made to vanilla Destiny anywhere? Curious about this questline business. Might replay the original missions if the changes manage to improve them.

Probably won't be getting TKK until I can track down a copy of the CE for a not-insane price on eBay.

Is there a basic team death match in destiny? I kinda get its like Diablo FPS but what's the basic MP like.

Only ever played 10 mins of the original demo but TTK looks fun and I can get base destiny, all the dlc plus expansion for ÂŁ44 physical which isn't a bad deal at all.

Potential spoiler:

The Taken King flagship that you patrol is located amidst Saturn's rings I believe.

Destiny PVP is the kind of shooter PVP you'd expect. King of the hill-ish game type, team death match, free for all, soon to be a CTF clone, etc.

Right, I was just saying the think the raid requirements will take some work to hit after players hit 40. My understanding of the campaign structure is: story missions get you to 40, the Taken War quest lines / endgame activities get you the gear to get into the raid.

Eh, calling it a "Diablo FPS" is a bit of a stretch. Borderlands is closer to that. There is no randomization of stats on the weapons in Destiny. The gear structure is set up more akin to an MMO.

Edit: maybe with the weapon perks I could see it being like Diablo with rerolling etc. Its somewhere half between Diablo and WoW?

Interesting. I expect it'll be more minor than the light level differences currently.

This is correct, Bungie has said part of the reason for the change is so the differences from one light level to the next are much more granular, and so playing below the recommended level is much less punishing being a few points under, than being a single level below in the current system. (i.e. playing level 30 content as 29 is much harder than playing a 280 activity when 275.)

Dig the new look of the Directior, not that it wasn't beautiful before or anything. Interesting that it states the locale of "Milky Way Galaxy, Local Group." Perhaps we'll be taken (no pun) outside the galaxy? I remember when Staten was with Bungie still, that he sort of hinted during a Q&A, during a GDC presentation that we'd travel the galaxy someday...

Yep that's right. In one of the TTK streams they showed the in orbit screen for Dreadnaught / Saturn and you can see where there's
a giant hole in Saturns rings where the Dreadnaught's blast went off at.

At some point in future installments they'll use up all the planets in our galaxy that they want us to visit, and have to move on to a new galaxy I'm sure.

any links? Sounds good

leaving the solar system would be cool

Definitely re-rolling my Titan. Mainly because all of the gear looks like ASS on her. (No Backup Plans are a joke on a FemTitan). Will run another Hunter, too, only this time she'll be a female Awoken instead of Human. New Titan will be human.

Let's do this.

Looks beautiful. Really loving the Sun sort of tying it all together, as well as it not being an actual object.
Is that one fake? Says "impression" on the bottom left now that I look closer. Here's one from a stream:

So what is the experience bar at the bottom? I thought light was tied to gear.

your character has level 1-40 on it's own, light is a buff stat.

When you hit max level in destiny before now that exp bar went away and any exp you earned went towards making a shard of light or whatever it's called, only way to check that progress was to go into the menu and hover over your light level but now they have kept that exp bar there for your light earning exp too.

So the purpose of the XP bar once you hit 40 is to just get another mote of light? They should have just not included it if that's the case.

That's just not good enough, honestly. Don't get me wrong, I'm hyped for The Taken King... I'm a huge Destiny player, love the game more than I've loved most in recent years, but I'm still going to call bullshit on keeping the old endgame content where it's at. That content needs to be updated with a cap-level difficulty because there's simply not enough content in the game to pretend like VoG/CE/PoE don't matter anymore.

And I'm a day one player. I've done VoG, CE and PoE over and over again and have every exotic in the game so it's not like I personally have a reason for them to be updated -- I've already experienced them many times. But no one new will have any legitimate reason to experience them outside of exotic drops, and it sounds like there are already going to be plenty of other ways to obtain exotics in TTK.

They need to update the year one endgame content, end of story. Because until they do, there's no reason whatsoever to do it except for "experiencing it" and good luck finding five other people who want to "experience" the Vault of Glass on a whim in late 2015.

3 days is a lot of time for people who play the game too much. Dgaf will be ready, my clan will be ready, the hardcore community will be ready (that's primarily who the raids cater too anyways). That's not even getting into the updated and improved loot system and infusion system.

You think you'll be ready. We'll see.

The don't, though. It's better they keep up with current content than remake older content. Regardless of what people at Bungie or int he community might say, the basic structure of Destiny is akin to that of an MMO. In an MMO, you keep moving forward. Rarely do MMOs update their older content in the way you're asking for, not without some kind of revamp or overhaul to them. It makes more sense to keep moving forward than to dedicate resource to adding new versions of older content. Old raids always become outdated. It's a simple fact of games with this design structure.

What they DO need to do is add matchmaking or some way to do older raids that takes your higher power levels into account and the fact that you may not need a complete, full power fire team anymore. That makes it easier for the people who DO want to do it just to experiance it or to get old equipment for whatever reason to just do it, and take some of the hassle and fuss out of the equation for older, no longer relevent content. I don't care if King's Fall doesn't have matchmaking or whatever, but it should come for older stuff eventually.

And to be clear, a lot of Destiny's year 1 content is moving forward. Story missions (via the daily Heroic mission), strikes via the new playlists, Crucible (new bounties and playlists with year 2 rewards), Trials of Osiris and Iron Banner are both getting new year 2 gear, and most exotic gear from year 1 are all advancing. The only things that are not are Vault of Glass, Crota's End, and the Prison of Elders. The new endgame is the new raid, Court of Oryx/Dreadnaught patrol, Nightfalls, Heroic strike playlist, Trials of Osiris, Iron Banner and potentially some high end exotic quest lines. Which is...a lot.
