Finally did mission 12 tonight after running through as many side ops as I could and hot damn that was exactly what I needed. Cutscenes. Tense stealth.
A DAMN METAL GEAR
. That was a fun one. Felt more like MGS.

This in-game real time of developing stuff sucks, I forgot when I turned the game off last night I'd have to wait for my shiny new bionic arm to finish developing.

How do you use cardboard boxes and decoy stuff effectively? They feel really clunky to me and I haven't really found a niche where they worked particularly well.

Kind of surprised about the sort of things some people ask for help with in this thread.

Do people not pay attention to things the game actively tells you?

Cardboard boxes are great in open areas with poor cover, especially during daylight. So long as you aren't seen moving, they'll never suspect you're there. Even if there's a lot of enemies a cardboard box gives you the time to get through them undetected. Plus ejecting from it can also be very handy in a tight spot, should things go sideways. Just be sure you've got the right camo, as that will make a difference.

Sure, eliminating enemies is a lot more foolproof than sneaking through them, but sometiems the situation demands a cardboard box.

I haven't used decoys yet, so I can't speak to their effectiveness. (They certainly work on me.)

What? MGS5 explains like 1/5 of its systems outright. It's refreshing, but questions are definitely warranted.

21 hours and still on Mission 6.
Defeated all 4 skulls. That was a tense mission, having to be constantly aware of the chopper and whatnot. My favorite one so far. I just can't stress enough how much I love the possibilities of being creative in the way you tackle situations in this game.
I have a feeling my playthrough time will be significantly higher than average as usual. Damn I'm slow.

I don't think I've been able to use boxes effectively in any Metal Gear.

That rationalization of Quiet's outfit is silly. "But once you recognize the secret reason for her exposure, you will feel ashamed of your words & deeds." Really? LOL

Over 25 hours into the game and still at 21%. I just got to
Africa
, and did the first mission there.

I love fultoning tanks and armored vehicles in the side ops, it's so satisfying. But how/where do I use them?

And is there an easy way to farm resources like fuel? I always have enough GMP but short on those resources, I want to upgrade Motherbase, but the fuel I find on missions is very insignificant, and you rarely get dispatch missions that give you non-plant resources.

Fuck you. Fuck mission 29. Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck everyone.

I can't do shit. I try to kill the big guys with rocket launchers, and they refill their health.
I can't call in a helicopter. I can't do anything. Fuck this mission.

Fuck you. Fuck everything. First time I angrily turned off the system. I'm so irritated.

Fuck.

Shotguns, revolvers, and the mounted weapons (AA, .50) will make short work of that mission. Especially the mounted weapons.

Tried to do a Side Op but managed to set up in motion Episode 11 (still haven't done Episodes 8-10).

My impression of Episode 11: Tense as fuck.
I'm so glad I had a sniper rifle equipped beforehand cause I sure was hell wasn't prepared to have a sniper fight with Quiet. I spared her life cause that's just the kind of guy I am (and I wanted to zoom in on the jiggling assets lol). The cutscene that followed after the mission ended was awesome too. She's currently in the brig, lying on her chest with her bra untied and there's music being played near the area. If you're on the main floor of the medical platform and check out the keep-out signs above the brig, you'll see that the signs have been tagged with words like "traitor" and "freak". Come on guys, be nice to Quiet :(

Quiet's gold outfit <3

Keep doing the main missions jesus. You're on 13 right now I presume so yeah... Way to early.

I'm sorely missing indoor environments and the linear progression so far. Are there more set pieces like the opening to this game?

It feels like I am playing Far cry instead of MGS.

Easiest way to get stuff like fuel is to look for material containers, they're mostly in the bigger bases. And some combat deployment missions have materials as rewards so look out for those.

You can use tanks and stuff from your load out screen or you can request them when you're out on missions.

After finishing the game.. there's only one or two moments like the opening, and neither live up to it.

Chapter 28: I highly recommend bringing Quiet, and being a sniper yourself for the first part of this one. Trust me, it creates all sorts of awesome.

Chapter 29: Omg, this was some Platinum Games shenanigans.

Just beat mission 43
Holy shit that was incredibly sad. Kojima making me kill my comrades :(. One of the best moments in mgs history for me. Felt like dead space for a min...salute to my dead comrades :(

I'm on mission 18 or something.
Can someone reassure me that the story does pick up and gets better. I don't care how much I have to slog away, I just want it to be worth it.
One word answers are fine.

Man, this is nothing like Far Cry and everything like MGS. A lot of people don't like that the series has evolved, but that's what the old games are for. I got tired as hell watching cutscenes in the other games, this has everything I enjoyed from the series' previous instalments and wraps it up in one of the best sandboxes ever made.

All these people saying it's not MGS, doesn't have enough MGS in it make me wonder what it is about MGS you actually liked. Maybe watching a movie is more your 'thing' than gameplay or something. This game has MGS in every corner of it's world.

For a person who did not play Snake Eater will I miss out on a lot of story elements when playing this one?

I know who Big Boss is, I know the clone storyline and the whole Big Boss/Zero 'Patriots' part but I am a little at loss who that Skull guy is supposed to be.

Deciding to pick this one up today if I will not be missing out on a lot of stuff.

Fuck mission 29. Fuck it. I can't beat them all. They regain their health and kill me while I run out of ammo. Fuck this game. Fuck fuck fuck.

Am I supposed to cheat or cheese the AI? If so, fuck this mission. Fuck it. Fuck Kojima. This is the worst thing I've experience in all of Metal Gear. Want to stealth it? Fuck you. Want to do a no kill run? Fuck you. Want to have fun? Fuck you.

Fuck you. Fuck You FUCK YOU.

FUCK.

Everything up to this point was a cake walk. Now? Fuck you.

Question out of curiosity:
Is it really possible to eventually develop a nuclear weapon? Konamis servers worked for a minute or two yesterday and it said something about a patch that had updated the amount of resources and GMP required to develop a nuclear weapon?!?!?!?!

Skull Face made his first appereance in Ground Zeroes. I think you'll be fine.

not only that

but the fact that it's mentioned in a scene where you are literally
sitting around with Ocelot watching her take a shower inside a cage

Yep,
it's towards the back of the area, way past the big hangars and stuff. Just keep exploring and you'll eventually find it.

Ugh, seriously? Ah well, guess I'll have to kill another fort of soldiers to get their
mailing address.

Thanks.

Ok, I'm going to hope this is the thread that is more or less spoiler safe.

I was really hyped about the game until I found that it would be open world, which totally kills it for me (and then FOB and online stuff, invasions... bleh). I really don't like the stealth mechanics and I just want the story, that I am being spoilered already everywhere from FB to Twitter. Right now I have a bad gaming burnout and I am too busy studying to devote time to a game (plus busted the money I had saved for it into a gym subscription), so I don't see myself playing before Xmas vacation, and by that point it's pretty sure they will have ruined the whole story for me unless I do a social media blackout.

Think it is ok to start watching longplays / walthroughs of the "no comments" variety? It's going to be the first time I do this, so I'm having it hard to know which of the streams I should be following, in terms of playing it properly, etc...

You dont like the stealth mechanics? wtf man. Also wtf you dont have time to play but you can watch someone else play?

Goddamn kids these days

Yes you can, I can't afford it yet though sadly. You can also make
a deterrent I believe.

This game is so brilliantly designed in terms of the gameplay, but even I have to admit that some of the other design choices about various aspects of this game are just baffling.

Why oh why did they think some of this stuff was a worthwhile idea?

This in-game real time of developing stuff sucks, I forgot when I turned the game off last night I'd have to wait for my shiny new bionic arm to finish developing.

I seriously don't understand why development doesn't progress when the game is closed. Peace Walker did this, I'm pretty sure.

GUYS, I accidentally "kicked" puppy DD... D:

Did I kill him? I swear I wanted to pet him, there was no triangle prompt that popped up, so I assumed it was hooked to Snake's CQC (like an idiot).

If I ruined my relationship, can/should I just reset my progress in the game (format my saved data)? I've only got to the 4th mission and have done a few side ops...

Please GAF help me!

Edit: NVM, just knocked him out. Crisis Averted.

So, from a gameplay perspective: they always advertised that enemy AI would adapt to your play style, ie wear helmets. I passed a certain mission and got a quick message in the reports on enemies starting to wear helmets. (It main the main ops where
you extract or kill the 3 main targets
Every other game I would instantly think "they shoehorned in a supposed dynamic feature in the form of 'beat mission x, people start wearing helmets'". So I wonder: is this still dynamic? Is there a different possible outcome?
