"it's just bright, is all" totally means that he's not blind.

also, I know that the dear writers asked some monekys and a bunch of 10 y old kids to write the game in their place but come on, can they really make Kaz blind from the start and then allow him to do all sort of things?

only possible explanations that could explain how he's blind from the start but does what he does.

1 - parasites

2 - he's daredevil

He's passing it off to avoid concern. I seriously just did the mission and its very clear that his eyes have been damaged. They look exactly like Venom's right eye does in the hospital bed.

Kojima took her away lmao
IMO that was easily the best character ending. Someone sent to kill you, being a massive sleeper assassin and then deciding. Nope. I ain't gonna do it. And then saving you. And then leaving ;_;

No wait, Quiet's story is shitty.

  • She's an assassin/soldier sent by Cipher to kill you in Cyprus.
  • She comes in your hospital room and kills a nurse and a doctor, just to get the job done.
  • A random guy next to you sees her face, so she decides he has to die too.
  • The guy (who she was going to kill) tries to defend himself desperately, and burns her to death.
  • She decides, then, that she wants revenge... not even against the guy who burnt her, but against the other guy, who did nothing at all in the first place.
    -
  • So then she infiltrates his organization, gets treated like a freak by everyone there.
  • Gets mostly ignored by BB (though he ignores everyone, so don't take it personally).
  • Gets tortured uselessly (even though they knew she couldn't talk, since they say so) after putting in several hours of duty as your buddy.
  • For whatever reason falls in love with BB anyway (he's and handsome devil after all).
  • She doesn't take the Wolbachia treatment that would render her dangerous strain non-lethal, because she still may want revenge against that dude who really did nothing to her.
  • She decides she really loves BB, so she runs away not to hurt him, 'cause she could stand a life as a mute, even though writing would've been a decent alternative.
  • BB goes after her anyway, and she, instead of getting the Wolbachia treatment, not seeking revenge anymore, decides to disappear forever anyway, for whatever reason.

Maybe i've missed something, but that doesn't make much sense to me.

The delivery on both lines is clearly not meant to actually be "yeah its just bright." Its really apparent something is wrong with his eyes from the get-go.
could be that, meaning "yeah I'm fucking blind but I'm not telling you, just keep going".

still you can't deny that it doesn't make any sense, in hindsight, for him to be blind from the beginning.

Either way, it's not explained or shown or told in a satisfactory manner. There is something up with Kaz's eyes (especially when Code Talker mentions them) but we'll never know because it was either cut or just terribly written.
ye, pretty much this.

let's just believe that he's the batman.

Like say what you will about the probability or ridiculousness of it all, but at the end of MGS4, I was legitimately emotionally wrecked by that final scene between Big Boss and Solid Snake. Fucking wrecked. I didn't care for how long the ending ran or that there were some stupid moments like Drebin interrupting Murl's wedding, but that final final moment between those two felt legitimate and had a true sense of closure.

I have absolutely no fucking idea what this game was.

Tying the horn to a hidden gameplay mechanic was fucking dumb. The most plausible theory I'd heard beforehand was that it would get bigger as you progressed, when in reality it's actually being slowly pushed out of BB's skull, culminating in it being removed in the ending, explaining why he doesn't have the horn by the time of MG1.

That is how I hoped and wanted it to go. I wanted it to get bigger (but really be getting pushed out because it was healing or because you were more active or whatever bullshit) as you were doing more and more unforgivable acts as you progress through the story and truly become a demon, the man from Metal Gear 1. And then at the end of the game, it falls out when he accepts who he is now or his friends/staff forgive him. It would have explained no horn in MG1 while also visually representing the decent into evil and finally going when BB accepts himself for who he has become and is forgiven by his staff and friends.

Or it could just be stuck in a guy that looks like BB and retcon MG1 so that BB did have a shrapnel horn and it was just used in game to represent a fall to evil but in such a way almost no one will see it unless you build a nuke (which seems very hard to do) or constantly kill every single thing you come across.

Quiet was definitely the strongest character in the game.

Even her blatant over-sexualization can be read as an embodiment of the things that go on between us when we aren't speaking.

Such a lust? Etc

Although, to be fair, I think there are interesting aspects to the whole Quiet, Venom dynamic. Both pretty much mute. Ultra male. Ultra female. Man and woman taken back to the dawn of humankind before language, before Salehanthropus was walking upright. How do you communicate? How do you express emotion? How do you copulate? Dancing in the rain. Taken showers together. Fighting off Soviet tanks. These are the things that come to mind when you think of our prehistoric beginnings.

could be that, meaning "yeah I'm fucking blind but I'm not telling you, just keep going".

Oh I don't deny that at all. It makes zero sense. Its most likely a dropped or brushed over plot point.

Fallen legends become demos.

Frankly, and I realize this is always the hot time for contrarians to jump out of proverbial e-holes and post contrarian comments, but I've always rather loved MGS4. I always have. I've always been rather vocal about that too.

This was the anti-MGS4, and that was never going to fly for me, and, well, there it is.

Remember when Kojima got on stage at GDC with Ishmael's bandages? He probably thought the twist was GOAT. I didn't mind at first, but getting increasingly bummed when I think of what could've been. I think I saw theories of V not being BB, but brushed them off, thought Kojima was past making twists regarding the main characters identity. In MGS2 it tied into the theme of the game... Though I suppose you could make the argument for V too, since the game is more about the story you create during gameplay. Just wish the marketing hadn't been so misleading. Didn't the japanese ads make a big deal about how the game would reveal BBs turn to evil? Sigh. And that final trailer, showing BB turning (metaphorically)into Skullface, all a lie.

About Mantis and his power level. Remember he also was constantly influencing the genome soldiers during Shadow Moses. Which along with age, it could possibly account for some of his fading powers.

Liquid said after Mantis death that the soldiers may start to lose morale.

For all its many, many faults, MGS 4 felt like a complete (and somewhat insane) art piece.

Quiet's plot is terrible. I really don't understand how people are attached to her outside of gameplay mechanics.

Really do not get the complaints about the ending and lack of "completeness", especially coming from alleged fans of the series who really should appreciate its place within the overall continuity of the saga.

Not that the game doesn't spell it all out in the post m46 text crawls and voice overs!

I thought it was because Miller was starting to suffer from Cataract due to the trauma of the torture.

Cataract is an eye dysfunction that gradually lowers eyesight and makes the eyes go grey. People who suffer from it, can also start to complain about bright lights.

It makes sense from a characer point of view, he loses sight of the bigger picture and begins to see phantoms everywhere as he cannot "see" anything anymore.

HUH. I had completely forgotten about that.

They're just attached to her boobs. I haven't used her once, actually just once but she never followed me. Just stood there where the helicopter left us.

Spelling out the ramifications of the ending is not in any way the point. So many people have made a similar post to yours completely missing the complaint.

As a story, like a plot with a beginning-middle-end, the game is incomplete at best. At worst, its barely there.

lol.

I have a better joke.

Venom: "knock knock."

Skull Face: "who's there?"

Venom: "..."

Skull Face: "who?"

Venom: "..."

Skull Face: "WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

That's the bell curve this game has.

Bad ass intro.
Amazing gameplay.
More amazing gameplay.
Ok, when does the story kick into gear?
Some more amazing gameplay.
This is all very tangential to what i thought was going to go down though.
I'm sure the story will start any minute.
Ah, here we go, it took a while but here we g-- Skullface just died?!
Wait what the fuck is happening?
I already did this mission.
Where am i?
Where's Quiet?
Why do i have to replay the intro again?
What's happening?
-
This is surely a Kojima ruse, this isn't it, the game is a prank, it's getting the full patch on _____ day for sure!
-
Proceed to come to terms with it, and come to this thread to vent.

All I can say is that wasn't my experience with the game at all. My favorite Metal Gear game by a good amount. Even the plot feels very much on par with the previous games.

Very well said. I respect that write up. It's too bad there aren't reviewers that can say something similar.

To my knowledge the only review that dinged it for the slap dash construction of the story was Jason Schreier. All the others mentioned it was thin, but none actually stated how badly the game was structured narratively.

They're just attached to her boobs. I haven't used her once, actually just once but she never followed me. Just stood there where the helicopter left us.

You can give her commands from hhe idroid. Whatever you think of her arc, the gameplay with her is solid

how many of you actually outsniped quiet in mission 40 and didn't use some lame cheese tactic

This guy. Considering I sniped all game, poking my head out to make her shoot before taking my shot ft. bullet drop in that second of time I had wasn't too bad. Tranqed her too.

To my knowledge the only review that dinged it for the slap dash construction of the story was Jason Schreiber. All the others mentioned it was thin, but none actually stated how badly the game was structured narratively.

Some Russian previewer slammed it to hell and back a couple of months ago, but people unanimously opted to tune him out.

Quiet's plot is terrible. I really don't understand how people are attached to her outside of gameplay mechanics.

I found her story to be tragic and interesting, but the overall execution to be shit until late into Ch.2, and even then you had to look past the hilarious sexual pandering.

More importantly though, like or hate her, she was the only one in the entire game that had some semblance of a character arc and semi-proper beats within it

Because they view it as a toy, and no one dings points if the plot of GI Joe's sandbox playtime doesn't add up.

This was the anti-MGS4, and that was never going to fly for me, and, well, there it is.

I hated the story of MGS4, and Old Snake. But I beat it about 3 times and again when trophies were added. Which I did with all previous MG games except for PW and V. MGS4 had that same addiction as the old ones, and it offered closure. I wanted to unlock those outfits by playing it differently.

The outlets shot themselves in the foot with MGSV, i'm an expert (it stops here). Handing out straight 10's like candy. Thats just not right. The gameplay is ofcourse extremely good, but the structure, the fact Quiet leaves forever (which is a huge gameplay issue), the handling of chapter 2, the non existent ending and the lazy Truth mission (with tutorial prompts, but the fact its a fucking 14 years after MGS2 who did it far better) is too much to consider this game a 10 (I don't say a 10 must mean a perfect game, nothing's perfect). This game has blatant issues. I'm sitting here, completing 50 missions, but for what? I expected something to happen after 50. But apparently I had seen all endings already. Those modified replays are literally there for shit and filler, and which fuckface decided to pick 29 as one of them?

I actually had to explain to people you only have to grind some side ops to get more missions and the ending. Its dumb.

You're on point with summarizing things today.

MGS4 felt like a complete story. A shitty story, but complete nonetheless, and with a quite emotional final scene.

Also, someone made a mod for GZ that essentially turns Big Boss into Solid Snake. Hope it gets ported over to TPP.

Quiet's plot is terrible. I really don't understand how people are attached to her outside of gameplay mechanics.

She's the best buddy and saved my ass a bunch of times, that's why i was attached to her, like i was attached to D Dog, despite having no real arc, or even D Walker.
Her stupid plot and her putting her ass in my face every two seconds while i'm checking my iDroid is more annoying than anything.

I still don't understand why Frank Jeager and wee Naomi aren't in the game (that I've seen). The time matched up, the location was vague enough to match, and it would've been a great chance to see a rookie Grey Fox. I'd rather have had that dynamic instead of teen rebel Quiet, Mummy Ocelot and Angry Dad Kaz.

Well, I imagine the setup for the Frank Yeager story would be that Frank was found by the real Big Boss during the events of TPP. That would give him adequate time to be rescued and trained, and would also explain why Grey Fox was sent to Outer Heaven, to kill Phantom Big Boss, and why he would join the Real Big Boss in Zanzibar Land.

I guess that's what makes most sense. he isn't completely blind from the start but then becomes blind at the end of chapter 1, as he obviously implies.

Quiet is actually pretty awful. It's literally "girl falls in love with her target". It's almost Stockholm ish.

Oh it's defo Stockholm ish. Coz Venom is the only one who treats her positively at MB. Actually, that's not true. Ocelot is basically her biggest fan from the start. But no boobs shoved in Ocelot's face. Ocelot has a pretty big reputation at this point. Admittedly for torture. But still, could she not fall in love with his legend?

In the defense of MGS4, it has 2-3 moments where I get teary in the eye. MGS V hasn't even one of those scenes.

Edit: yes I said "EYE" BECAUSE I AM BIG BOSS YOU KNOW?

They're just attached to her boobs. I haven't used her once, actually just once but she never followed me. Just stood there where the helicopter left us.

The more you use her the better she performs.

You didn't even get the "Cover Me" command for fucks sake. You have no idea what you're talking about.

And FYI I thought the character and her story as presented in the game were terrible. Though it had potential, it went nowhere.

This Paz shit is driving me fucking insane. Can't you look at all these stupid pictures? I have to keep leaving MB and coming back. Goddammit. I smoked like 4 phantom cigars and she was still asleep. Fucking Paz.

I was kinda expecting a Zero cameo. Wasn't his voice in one of the trailers?

Or was he already in a vegetative state?

Beat the game, he is in a few tapes (lol)

MGS4 offers, for me, the highest heights and the lowest lows. But I'm a real sucker for final chapters in sagas, and I can overlook things when there feels like a fairly epic climax in other areas. Also, MGS4 feels like a complete game -- I echo that sentiment -- and it seems like an oddly rare thing to be able to say these days.
