If you check a previous post of mine, you'd see I likened VS to Humpty from Puss'n'boots wherein he explains he was there at every pivotal moment in Puss' life.

The same can, and verily has been, said of Skull Face. He was there during Snake's days in the CIA, Virtuous Mission, Operation Snake Eater and likely Portable Ops uprising. He was basically Snake/Big Boss's janitor, taking care of the less glamorous sidejobs (silencing officials/reporters etc, making sure supply planes and exit routes are ready) and resented Snake for it.

Or at least, that's what I think Kojima's going for. It's hard to tell...

You cool? Great! Let's ask Paz where the guy is without putting a bomb in her vagina because that would be a pretty weird thing to do, right? Also, why does that medic guy next to you sound so much like you? Sounds convenient.. Anyhow, I got to go, have a good one!"

He didn't. Other than just being an inconvenience and getting in the way every now and again, Skull Face has no interest in Venom. He half arses his attempts to kill him when he has the chances to because Venom is an afterthought. Why are you here? Fuck it you can burn with the rest. There's no real hatred there, he just wants him out of the way, or rather, to not screw up his plan.

Skull face was still a part of Cipher during GZ. He betrayed Zero after learning the location of everyone who may get in the way of his Agenda. He interrogated Chico to find out location of BB. He interrogated Paz to find out Zero's location. He first took out BB. Later Zero moved his jurisdiction to Africa. Than he took out Zero with that pin. Zero never allowed Skull Face to do what he wanted. He wanted to do the entire parasite language stuff but Zero said no and told their focus instead is on building an AI n stuff. So Skull face said fuck it and started his own revolution. His biggest threat was BB and Zero. He took them both out (except both lived lol). He is just a rogue agent who has a lust for revenge.

My guess is Skull Face hated everything Zero ultimately wanted, and Zero eventually wanted to curb Big Boss back into his Cipher unit. I guess it's hate by association. Skull Face also wanted a system of what would appear to be anarchy: instead of the Patriots AI system trying to control information ala George Orwell, Skull Face didn't want one unified body controlling everything, but such disruption that it demanded equal power to any and all participants in the world. Both Skull Face and Zero probably thought each of their ways would lead to deterrence and peace, but both clearly showcase the major ills in trying to accomplish that. I would imagine the metallic archaea was a safety net to demand majority assimilation, for non-players would have their weapons and bravado physically deteriorate on them.

Big Boss would be a thumb to either project, so even if he agreed with Skull Face in wanting to attack Zero, I doubt they'd be eye to eye on the methodology of actions between nations.

But Peace Walker was one of the better ones, mostly thanks to the script. I think MGS2 might be the worst one, or maybe not, Vamp was pretty great and it had Patric Zimmerman. MGS3 perhaps? Every Metal Gear has their good and bad points.

Alright. That doesn't really make too much sense but at least I can see some form of a structured narrative in that explanation. Also thanks to all the other answers, it's appreciated!

Now I just have to figure out if Venom Snake is supposed to be a bad guy, if Big Boss wanted him to die in Metal Gear and used Solid Snake for it because he thought that Venom took things too far, why Big Boss then in turn turned into just as much of a bad guy just in time for Metal Gear 2 and how in the fuck Venom got that piece of debris out of his skull that totally nobody could take out of his skull.

Man. Honestly guys? I loved Metal Gear's story. From Metal Gear straight to Metal Gear Solid 4. I love everything about it. I love the way MGS4 ended all these different storylines in a very satisfying way. I know, the game isn't loved on GAF, but I adore it. I got what every character wanted to do. I knew who Big Boss was and I understood his character.

Now I have no idea who anybody is anymore and it makes me really pretty fucking sad :/ Because...I mean...that's it. This is seriously it. There won't be any more explanations. This is all we got. Maybe Kojima will explain some stuff a few years down the road in an interview, but that's really not the same, is it?

I love this game. It is one of the best games I have ever played. But holy shit, it might have destroyed my favorite game series of all time in the process :/

The craziest thing about Ocelot is that his performance hits the extremes of quality. Sometimes he sounds like an exact fusion of MGS3 Ocelot and MGS1 Ocelot, and others (most of the time) he just sounds like Troy Baker doing a southern accent, it's baffling.

Also I don't think it's quite fair to tear down Code Talker's voice work. His dialogue was terrible, but I found the actual voice acting to be quite good. It's not his fault the script is the way it is.

Personally I think Miller's VA did the best job. It felt like there was actual passion there, which is unfortunately more than I can say for most of the other voice work in the game.
 
The golden prosthetic arm is really good, literally tried it for the first time just now. I just took out an entire base with nothing but sprint+punch during a sandstorm without stopping.

Also I think MGO3 is going to be really good. The little interactions I had against other players during FOB invasions makes me excited. Sure the movement system is complete different compared to MGO2/MGS4 -- it doesn't feel as snappy, and also no there's no box-popping this time, but I think everything else is much better.

Kind of a side note, but I gotta say how weird it is seeing you here hating on this game with the rest of us, especially considering how similar the dislike for this game is to MGS4 (a game whose story you still seem to defend vehemently). Any reason why you found this games usage of parasites/nanomachines and retcons worse than when MGS4 did it?

I don't mind the parasites and nanomachines at all, actually. However, I have something against the parasites that I don't have against nanomachines, and that is overexplanation.

We know what nanomachines do, but the games don't actually go into much detail on how they work or the science behind them. We know they release chemicals that affect physiology, and we know that they transfer information into a network. But the parasites are overexplained, from where they come from, to their mating rituals, to their reaction to Wolbachia. And we listen to that over and over and over again.

I don't mind the words or the concepts themselves. I'm not the kind of Metal Gear fan that is angry about them. They are still fairy dust. They give superpowers. But Code Talker and the game itself go way overboard in not only introducing the parasites, but in constantly trying to give us biology classes on them.


EDIT: For example. When Naomi says that Vamp's healing ability is enhanced by nanomachines, that's all the explanation we get. Fairy dust. With parasites we listen to Code Talker rambling about mist, moisture, nutrients, mating, skin replacement (Or something like that). It is still fairy dust, which is a concept I'm NOT against, but it is overexplained fairy dust. There's no need.

I can't speak for him, but TPP's story is paced horribly, all while being bare-bones. MGS4 at least told a fleshed out and decently paced story. The parasites in TPP are just a fun and easy way to make fun of the game.

Absolutely agree about Miller. He's did the best job.

But, with Code Talker, I think his dialogue is terrible, and maybe the worst dialogue for any MGS character, so it is hard to separate it all. He's... just such a ..... boring ....... character.... who copulates.... with the male.... and female.... voice..............

Just have to chime in here:

I honestly think Huey's voice acting is one of the worst I have heard in a AAA game in the last decade. It is unbelievable how much it completely pulled me out of the scenes.

Huey pleading for his life sounds exactly the same as Otacon crying for Sniper Wold sounds exactly the same as Huey talking about how he murdered his girlfriend & the mother of his son sounds exactly the same as Otacon pissing himself sounds exactly the same as Huey being mad at Snake sounds exactly the same as Otacon in every emotional scene no matter the context sounds exactly the same as Huey in every emotional scene no matter the context.

Otacon and Huey are nothing a like but still sound and talk and express themselves in 100% exactly the same way. When Huey is supposed to seem sinister and kind of batshit insane when he throws up his arms looking at Salehanthropus, he just seems really giggly and happy the same way Otacon was when talking with Sunny at the airfield at the end of MGS4.

The voice actor wasn't reat in Otacon's role, but it still kind of fit because Otacon was such a good-natured (and pretty straight forward, one-dimensional) guy. But a two-faced, deeply troubled, complex personality like Huey? That was so far over his head he didn't even really try.

It's remarkable how much better the tape between Code Talker and Skull Face is. Code Talker doesn't sound like a 90-year-old about to doze off at all.

It is the only tolerable tape, I straight up refuse to listen to the other shit until I suffer from Insomnia.

That's exactly what I liked about Randolph's performance in MGSV. He has a very soothing voice, like very gentle and nerdy. When you throw that voice into a character that may or may not be a complete son of a bitch it makes you doubt. It certainly made me doubt about Huey's actions in this game. In my opinion it was better to give him the voice of an obviously backstabbing villain.

So many people tried to defend the story and VA work by saying "listen to the tapes!" and then I did, and they were dull and bad and boring. There are some real good tapes here and there, but it is just so inconsistent.

If we can strip aside the entirety of the gameplay (which is uniformly brilliant), this MGS presentation is the most inconsistent and uneven of the entire series. And what stinks is we'll probably never get a behind the scenes conclusive look on why it is.

I guess I missed a Quiet scene because I didn't hide in a dumpster for hours on a mission, and there's probably others I missed as well. Also, PAZ being in the game inside a medical door that you have no reason to ever walk by is stupid too.

The story progression is worse than the story and the bastardization of characters. But, maybe it is just the old Jewish joke of "such lousy food.... and such small portions!"

There are a lot of valid complaints about this game's story/presentation, but I don't mind the fact that some cutscenes are hidden. In another era, I feel like that would have been a point of praise, but not in today's completionist era.

90 percent of the tapes in this game are boring as fuck. They cannot even match the level of Peace Walker's tapes.

The hamburger tapes were cool, but they don't hold a candle to the Carboard box Tank or the Santa Claus tapes from PW.

I totally agree with this. I had a hard time accepting Huey did the things he did at first, which I think is the point. Re-listening to his lines you can hear him trying to convince himself of his lies.

He's a vulnerable villain, which is what makes him so interesting.

I see. I really disliked Kojima using nanomachines as not only a copout plot device, but also as a means to retroactively explain/ruin the awesome villains he built up in past games. It didn't really matter how in depth he went into their inner workings, it still felt insanely cheap and unnecessary. Him doing the exact same thing in MGSV with the parasites was unbelievable.

I agree for the most part. I actually enjoyed MGS4's story and it at least felt complete and cathartic when finishing it, even though I didn't appreciate certain aspects (like the retcons, nanomachines unnecessarily explaining away powers and used as a copout for other things). At the end of the day, despite it's plot failings and questionable gameplay structure, it's still the last Kojima game that still felt like MGS to me.

90 percent of the tapes in this game are boring as fuck. They cannot even match the level of Peace Walker's tapes.

The hamburger tapes were cool, but they don't hold a candle to the Carboard box Tank or the Santa Claus tapes from PW.

MGSV is the worst female representation of a game I've played in a long while. Every female character sucks. Such garbage.

I agree for the most part. I actually enjoyed MGS4's story and it at least felt complete and cathartic when finishing it, even though I didn't appreciate certain aspects (like the retcons, nanomachines unnecessarily explaining away powers and used as a copout for other things). At the end of the day, it's still the last Kojima game that still felt like MGS to me.

Yeah, I can understand that. Believe me, I'd take 100% supernatural to nanomachines any day of the week. I prefer when the superpowers go unexplained, and I would've prefered if Kojima didn't explain them.

But science in the Metal Gear universe is basically magic-level of bullshit, anyways. In most occasions, "because nanomachines" means "because magic" to me.

Is it unnecessary? Definitely. But it doesn't "ruin" anything for me. Vamp recovering from all the wounds he got in MGS2, including getting shot in the head with a sniper rifle is explained with "nanomachines", but what I hear is "because magic". Nanomachines that work that fast, protecting (Or repairing?) the brain from a gunshot like that are basically bullshit magic. So it doesn't bother me as much.


I DO understand why people hate them, though. I'm not blind to that. I guess we all have our "breaking points" where our suspension of disbelief cannot hold out any longer. I can accept the concepts of nanomachines and parasites, but when they go out of their ways to analyze with extreme and annoying detail how those magical devices work, now THAT is my breaking point, and unfortunately it was reached with the parasites and the Wolbachia.
