He's more of a bitter ex in V. Everything was downhill after the Love Box.

Even Volgin can see it.

Then there's the way he kept the bullet as a necklace, the kiss in MGS4, the retcon that he devoted his entire life to Big Boss - Kojima referred to their relationship as a "pure love" in the MGS3 commentary (to be specific "Snake and Ocelot, from the first moment they set eyes upon each other, they both fell into liking with each other. It is a pure love."), but I wouldn't be surprised if Ocelot's side of it wasn't platonic.
It's hilarious to me looking back on it now, because it completely went over my head when I first played it back then, too. I was just as clueless as Snake was in that game. I had no idea what EVA was on about.
Every single thing in the Metal Gear universe revolving around Big Boss and/or his ideals was a bad move, I think.

Naaaw.

Don't forget they also showed several shots from the quarantine base mission too: BB shooting his own soldiers, him walking down the hall with motherbase soldiers dead everywhere.

The trailers even showed the real Big Boss getting on his motercycle, I even noticed and thought it was weird that BB didn't have that horn that scene lol

Oh, right, of course! Was just highlighting what the first two trailers revealed! (Neglected to mention the Paz bomb extraction, which was probably the most shocking moment in MGSV...)

I don't think anyone can pose a valid argument as to how this story is not a joke. We don't actually see why Big Boss transformed into a villain or anything like that. As the Kotaku article pointed out, that scene in the hospital would have been a good catalyst, but the fact that it's Venom doing that and not the real Big Boss kills that whole thing. MGS is my favorite series and I don't think I have been disappointed in a game this much in all my 28 years. If I had to rank the games it would be like this.

MGS1
MGS3
MGS2
MGS4

MGS5

Yeah, vocal chords.

It's not like this is a new thing for him, though. Peace Walker may as well have been titled Metal Gear Solid: How Do You Feel About Having the Concept of Nuclear Deterrence Explained to You By Twenty Different Voice Actors?

And don't get me started on Nanomachine Sold 4: The Proxy War Economy.

I just beat mission 46 and watched the mission 51 video last night and sat on the story for a bit.

I think I would echo most of the sentiments voiced in this thread.

One thing I would like to add is that there needed to be three or four more supporting characters for tapes.

A character from Afghanistan to tell us about life there and small details about the Mujaheddin

A character from Africa to do a similar role

Someone from the animal NGO to give the animal platform some more life and give some details about each animal captured.

Someone to talk about the music tapes (be a pop culture character too to fill in the detail for Snake since he has been out for 9 years, sorta like Para-Medic )

They could have EASILY fulfilled the first two with stuff you did in the main game. Malak for Afghanistan and maybe a child soldier for Africa. You probably could have kept a couple of the Ocelot "Africa/Afghanistan Today" tapes as a primer, but fleshed it out with characters from the region.

For the last two, I think they could probably be merged into one character. Maybe make it a woman who is really 80's in fashion (Cyndi Lauper-ish) a animal rights person with an interest in music.

I got REALLY sick of hearing Ocelot, Miller and Code Talker in those tapes. Code Talker had WAY more than he needed, but he did provide us the hamburger ones so they weren't all bad.

Don't forget they also showed several shots from the quarantine base mission too (Mission 43 IIRC) : BB shooting his own soldiers, him walking down the hall with motherbase soldiers dead everywhere.

The trailers even showed the real Big Boss getting on his motorcycle, I even noticed and thought it was weird that BB didn't have that horn in that scene when I saw the trailer way back lol
Nah you're misrememebering this because he had a horn and prosthetic arm in the trailer when he was on his bike. That was a misdirection

I miss when Metal Gear Solid boss battles were testaments to amazing game design. Isolated sections of ultra focused detail and multiple methods of tackling a boss, not just a massive health bar.

There doesn't seem to be anything akin to "Hey, you can throw snakes at Ocelot to distract him", or even the stuff with The End or most of the bosses.

I thought the Quiet boss battle was cool, until I realized it was a simple sniper battle with no variation in attack patterns.

I always saw it as in the heat of the moment and all the shit going on, Eva lost track of it not really being Big Boss, since she pretended for so long.

Finished up Quiet's stuff today. A really sad, moving exit preceded by such an awful mission. Ended up abusing airstrikes and burning through my GMP and spare vehicles to sell. Which, by the way, is bullshit that money and vehicles fultoned reset after death but for some fucking reason the vehicles you sell are still gone. But whatever. I really liked Quiet's goodbye, and Venom taking all her pictures out of the helicopter is so sad.

Quiet really wanted to be a great character, but Kojima's perverted idiocy combined with his hacky writing really held her back.

Yup, the game thoroughly lacks support characters. The only new character we get is Code Talker, and he straight up sucks.

I mean, how the FUCK do you not bring Cecile back to take care of the Animal platform and provide you with useless but interesting tidbits about wildlife in whatever area you are. That's exactly what she does in Peace Walker. Not to mention another woman on the team would be most welcome. Now we have Revolver Ocelot, infamous triple-agent and torturer telling me how African mountain goats have tasteful milk. What the fuck, dude.

Why not bring Amanda back as a trainer for the new Diamond Dogs recruits? Not even a tape from EVA, really? Come on now.

Woah, you're right. My bad, I must be turning senile or something because I'm sure there was something that made me question that particular scene as it felt out of place in a way.

Quite's story was the only good one in the whole game and Kojima tried to fudge that one up by making her basically naked

I think the horn looks a little different. And Snake has one less strap on his eyepatch. Maybe that was it?

Yup, the game thoroughly lacks support characters. The only new character we get is Code Talker, and he straight up sucks.

Nah, son. Code Talker's research was actually interesting. It was kinda neat to know that he's part of the Navajo Code Talkers, was the one that built the code for the Code Talkers to use in the war.

Then he wanted to save his people so that's why he started to research the parasites.

Cecile wasn't going to come back since that was a one-time deal between Kojima and the Konami Europe employee. I doubt he wanted to license her again.

Amanda was too busy with Costa Rica politics to come back. The major MAJOR disappointment on that front for me was not a tape about her blaming Big Boss or grieving Chico's death in the helicopter. It's like "oh well after the attack on Mother Base she's been busy with helping Costa Rica and Nicaruga out."

I don't know about EVA and the tapes.

B-but photosynthesis!!

Let's disregard that The End, another super sniper was photosynthetic.

The End only needed sunlight though. Code Talker and Quiet need water for their "photosythesis" to work with the parasites converting the water into Sugar. It's a bit dumb that Quiet's attire couldn't be fully clothed (given the outfits you earn before she exits stage right) and the reason given on that is "well she breathes through her skin!" as the reason. :/ Because water-wise it isn't like Code Talker needs to be fully naked to absorb water for his photosynthesis process unlike Quiet. :/

BB's characterization as Ishmael is really just perfect. He's super chatty, witty ("You're talking to yourself"), and has his awesome moments (jumping off the stairwell). He felt like Boss to me, in contrast to Venom who, aside from being a leader who cares about his subordinates, isn't really like Big Boss at all.

Well BB is BB and VM is... not. The thing is he thinks he is. His memories are impartial so all he really knows is kinda what BB would do. I think that shows VM doesn't talk bc he doesn't know what the hell to say, at the end of the game it shows how confused he really is basically all of the time.

It also plays into Quiet and how you can choose to kill her or save her bc this isn't BB

Quiet could have easily had a more modest outfit even with the dumbass story constraint. Give her like a sports bra sort of deal that covers her cleavage, take off that giant ass glove on one arm taking up space, give her some short shorts or even like a speedo that's not a thong, and get rid of the stupid fetish stockings. There. More skin showed than she was already showing and way less gross of an outfit.

Fucking Kojima. The series will be better off without him.

Right, you just illustrated my point. It's a contrivance and half ass justification to have her parade around in little clothing.
imagine that 120 year old ball sack dangling physic
Fox Engine lemon parties. Kojima could work that unto the story and it wouldn't even be that weird, story already went full potato

Totally agree, one of the reasons why removing codecs for tapes was a poor idea.

the giant bomb spoilercast will be out tomorrow morning

it will likely be a good listen, as they seem to be split on the ending.

Totally agree, one of the reasons why removing codecs for tapes was a poor idea.

Honestly though, I thought the tapes were fine in Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. They were in-depth, acted out well and could be listened to at any time. Whereas in The Phantom Pain, they are used as a cheap replacement for cutscenes. This aspect of the game being a letdown is probably the biggest shock to me, as prior to release I was all on board expecting the same level of detail presented to us in prior entries.

MGS5

MGS4 was much worse... At least this game didn't waste my time forcing nonsense on me with replaying mission 46 being the exception (that was just lazy).

But as far as the way the story was told (for me that includes cutscene/gameplay ratio since this is a game)

MGS1
MGS3/MGS5 (3 would be ahead if it wasn't for the awful opening 3 hours)
MGS2

MGS4 (by a long shot)

Story plot, themes and direction

MGS2
MGS3
MGS1
MGSV
MGS4

While we are at it. Gameplay/level design

MGSV
MGS3
MGS2
MGS1
MGS4 (although first two acts are right behind phantom pain)

Still need to consider the rankings when playing through series again.

Yeah me too. Aside from being able to drop crates on her (which is not even specific to that fight, it's just a cheap trick) you don't fight her in a way that is fundamentally different than any other sniper enemy in the game. Get in cover, look for the glare, shoot her, repeat.

Nothing special. It wouldn't even be a boss in any other Metal Gear game.

go back and listen to the Peace Walker tape where Big Boss asks Huey if he's really okay with arming ZEKE with a nuke after regretting Peace Walker, and Huey telling him that he trusts Big Boss to do the right thing and stay the same person he has been, and you think it's dramatic irony about how Big Boss turns bad.

Now look at where both characters ended up

Woah this sucks, I come into this thread everyday and reflect on the game, getting saltier and saltier every time. Ive tried to replay it a few times, end up extremely bored and depressed. Goodnight MGS5. I cant even trick myself into ever enjoying this game again

Try hypnosis, it might work.

Kawanishi-nosegu... ah fuck it, hypnosis doesn't work guys.

They suck in TPP because they are meant to be played in the field but that's impossible becau- HEY BOSS IT'S AN ENEMY GUNSHIP!!!!!!!!!!

The best part of Peace Walker's tapes is that 99% of them were basically supplementary material, either funny things, extra conversations or other such things. The only real story relevant ones, were the hidden tape with millers conversation with cipher, and paz's diary. Even the stuff with EVA's tapes and the ones about the boss are purely just more background very little being relevant to the current story just stuff to quell fan curiosity mostly.

MGSV has A LOT of relevant story material hidden away in tapes, that's why some tapes are fucking marked yellow, because they're probably stuff that should have been cutscenes.

One thing that bothers me gameplay-wise is how under utilized mother base is for the main single player part. It's so lifeless and boring. It basically serves as one big cutscene facilitator and that's it. It only gets attacked once, so there's no gameplay on it. Most of the soldiers don't do anything while there, and there aren't enough interior spaces to really have fun looking around in. It would have been nice to see sleeping quarters or actually visit Ocelot and Miller on the base, but they took that out.

It's kinda cool that you can walk around your actual mother base this time, but once you get past the 15 minutes of awe, it's really no different than not having it in Peace Walker. This should have been one of those places where we actually see 100's of soldiers just doing their thing in their new home, but it's nothing really.

Mother Base strikes me as something they should have done well or not at all. It's too big of an element for how uninteresting it is.

They should have been thinking 'GTA open world' when making it. It should feel like a small city. I should walk around and see soldiers playing soccer at night, doing target practice (outside of a cutscene), maybe let me explore the canteen or living quarters.

It's just boring to be in.

I feel without motherbase inclusion, what you're fighting for would seem even less real. You'd be acquiring resources just for a mercenary business menu simulator. Having something a little more tangible, I think gave some actions, personnel acquired etc a sense of weight. Most definitely could have been done a lot better, but I think just having menus wouldn't do the building of motherbase from nothing to something any justice.

Yes, exactly! They added a ton of depth to the story that was already there. The further along you progressed in the story, the more you learned about each character, mech, setting, plot - not just within the game but the entire MG universe! They helped piece together why characters behaved as they did or believe in what they did - backing up what you see on display within the game's story. In TPP, they are the be all, end all with much of the story, which wouldn't be so much of a problem if we'd be given enough to work with on-screen, ya know?

I would have liked the story less if it were the real Big Boss. The quarantine zone is hardly a moment of Big Boss turning into a villian, Venom makes all the right decisions in that scene. He does nothing that would corrupt him or commit him to a morally questionable lifestyle.

Big Boss turned into a villian at the end of Peace Walker when he rejected The Boss for wanting peace instead of war. We really don't need an entire video game to show Big Boss having a Darth Vader moment. Big Boss falling is heavily implied at the end of MGS3 and throughout Peace Walker.

The story ideas in MGS5 are way more interesting, the execution is just a bit lousy.

seriously. huey - one of the most if not the most hateable characters in TPP. and big boss, er make that his phantom venom snake, pretty cool guy

MGS3 was all that was needed. It was absolutely perfect in explaining how he went down the road of warlord while simultaneously operating as commander of a clandestine special operations unit that succeeded his own former unit. No plot holes or retcons necessary. Just good, clean narrative.

Pretty much this. Everything related to MGS3 afterwards just plain shitted up the story with the whole The Boss's will crap.

I really thought there would be some explanation for all his actions, but he really is just a dick who's defence was "you're crazy, it wasn't me!"

I think the implication is that he just has a fetish for building bipedal weapons, and will go with whoever lets him do it. But that was insight another NeoGAF poster gave me, I didn't glean it much from the game itself but looking back it seems kind of there.

Big Boss: I gotta say... I'm surprised you helped us arm Metal Gear with nukes.

Huey: What of it?

Big Boss: Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful and all, but... you sure about this? They may be for MSF's self-defense, but they're still nukes. It's essentially the same thing as Peace Walker, which you despised.

Huey: ...See, that's exactly it.

Big Boss: What is?

Huey: You don't hide your motives. You tell the truth. That's what makes you different from those CIA bastards. They lay on the charm - win you over. And then, when things get hairy, they turn their backs on you.

Big Boss: ...I'm just telling it like it is.

Huey: Which is why I get the feeling you wouldn't be stupid enough to use them... Okay, I'll come out and say it. I trust you.

Big Boss: You give me too much credit.

Huey: You think so? Besides, there's more uses for bipedal locomotion technology than weapons. We make it small enough, and it could have applications in robotics and prosthetic limbs. Maybe one day I'll even be able to walk.

Big Boss: (hmm) Nice thought.

Huey: I wanna stand on my own two feet, be master of my own fate. And I'll use your strength to help me do it... if you don't mind, of course.

Big Boss: Nah, it's a fair enough deal.

Huey: Thanks. People can change, I know... but I trust you, Snake. I trust you to be the guy I know now.

jfc what happened

No one in MGSV really acts like their pres-established selves and any development that happened to transform them into these weird bizarro versions of themselves happens off screen. Ocelot becomes a standup guy who doesn't really enjoy torture and is completely truthful throughout the game (outside of withholding your real identity). Kaz becomes a vengeful, paranoid asshole. Huey becomes a sociopath who kills his wife in order to experiment on his own child.

It's like everyone in Diamond Dogs is a body double.

You can't drop crates on her in the Extreme fight. The Extreme fight shows how gimmicky that fight really is when you just hang around the trees on the left of the starting point of that fight. She can't see through the trees but your binoculars can. So if you know where she is by the glint, you can quickly go into the trees, see through them to "mark" her and then pop her in the head with a long range scope sniper to counter.

It's a shame because the fight being done with a level 1-2 Tranq Pistol and quick diving into cover is still the highlight of the game for me. But it's easy to see how you can "game" the fight.
