Just a curious question: Since this game relies heavily on language and how English is the enemy and whatnot, what did they do in the Japanese version?

Could Quiet not speak Japanese? Were they assuming Japanese was English? Did they change the story?
Its the same, just dubbed in Japanese and we assume they are speaking in English.

I've been saving mission 45 and in turn the "All Missions" achievements till after this nuke is finished developing thinking they would remove demon points but actually looking at stuff online, they don't actually remove demon points. Is it really only all the buddy related achievements that remove demon points? That would be really a shame because stuff like like making them available for deployment usually happens about 40 hours before most people can even build a nuke.

I still have another 3 hours on this nuke and I have pretty much nothing else to do.

I just noticed that Pequod says "Ahab, we can't land." When you're trying to rescue Kaz. Was this one of the big tells early in the game, other than the intro, I mean.

Has anyone else ever noticed the fact Venom's arms seem like a different skin shade compared to the face?
I figured it was just lighting but I've been noticing it in so many different scenarios and it just looks like two similar but different shades.

The player is always nicknamed Ahab isn't he? Why would this be a tell?

He was becoming too powerful and potentially too big a force left unchecked? Ocelot even mentions there can eventually only be one Boss.

It seems like Ocelot could have undone the hypnosis at any time and they could have integrated Outer Heaven into Zanzibar Land. We vaguely have an idea of why Venom had to be taken out along with OH but we don't have specifics. We don't really know how Big Boss became the leader of FOXHOUND again either after all those years.

Eh whatever. He had to go because he had to go. That's all there is to it I guess.

Jesus.

"Never Be Game Over" is just a reference to non-English speakers' propensity to misuse English in ways they think sound cool. Using this phrase from Eli's jacket as proof that there's a 3rd Chapter is just ridiculous.

I can't beleive there's another conspiracy involving ground zeroes save data.

This is why I love mgs fans , they do this to themselves.

Hey, do you guys remember that guy who released all the leaks that turned out to be true? Didnt he actually play some of the stuff that turned out to be cut content?

Well, MGS has been my unequivocal GOTY every year a mainline has released.

But, just beat Witcher 3 and I think W3 is at least tied with V. Not sure if that says more about W3 or V.

The protagonist and narrator of moby dicks is ishmael, or so it seems at first. Ahab becomes the protagonist and ishmael fades into the background. The literary allusion and parallels are pretty transparent. Venom and ahab missing limbs, seeking revenge,

reminder that when big boss was tricked into an assasination attempt, he decided to go ahead with the Illuminati's plan to create a body double while he fled to the States
when Solid Snake was tricked into an assasination attempt, he just decided to put on a crappy disguise and get back into action.

i'm not sure it is tbh. i always thought it was just a radio callsign.

Did you notice that during the face off with Skullface, Pequad refers to himself as Queequeg?

Not sure why they went with all the Moby Dick references. They did an awful job building a revenge narrative in the first place, so it comes off as trying too hard.

Big Boss

- Gets tricked by a girl called Pacifica Ocean
- Gets tricked by a guy called Hot Coldman
- terrible security, let's a guy escape 7 damn times
- goes on a rescue mission for a girl and a child and loses them both, then goes into a coma
- gets shook by some dork who calls himself Skullface
- hides while his double with better hair performs his job better than he did

the first 2 are already irreparable black marks
Also he pisses hmself in front of two women he loves.

I've read it/get the connection. He asked why the player being called Ahab by Pequod would be a tell that it's not really Big Boss. Or that's how I interpreted his question anyway. Since you're always called Ahab from the start it's not really a "tell".

Venom can't speak Russian.

Venom doesn't say the line "Kept you waiting".

He doesn't have the Bosses scar?

Those are the ones that I can think of. None of this ofcourse makes sense but whatever.

There's also the huge tell of looking into a mirror and creating an avatar.

And the slightly smaller one when Ocelot references the "new you."

whole world wants big boss dead

> goes into hiding like a punk and lets the doctor do his job for him

whole world wants solid snake dead

> founds ngo with his bro and wipes out almost every metal gear on the planet

Solid has always been a better character than Big Boss. I do like BB's goofiness but Solid is a much more... well, "solid" character. His story isn't about an eventual downfall or filling in gaps, but about being true to his ideals and forging a future and an identity for himself. His friendship with Otacon is like the best thing. Legendary super soldier befriends nerdy engineer and starts vigilante organization? By far the coolest setup in the series. Their banter during the tanker mission was perfect.

We deserved more Solid Snake games.

Yes though we don't have much context for why Venom needed to go.

Have a feeling big boss felt as if he used him up enough and needed to tie loose ends because if he remained alive, Venom could have spilt everything to someone. Having Solid do it saves big boss from having to. Also maybe big boss felt threatened a little with what venom brought to the table as a man and "legend" of big boss and got to "big"

I just beat the game and I don't know what to feel. I loved it all the way through, I even liked the story, but when the reveal happened that joy was kinda sucked out of me. It's a really lame reason but I guess I don't like it because I don't feel as cool. I'm some dude I didn't even know. I wish Big Boss had a robot arm.

With BMs mental conditioning and reverence for BB i think the whole "Why come after him later" bit could have easily just been a decision out of BB's hands. Like... the president or NATO or whoever is like "Some psycho is making a country of soldiers and you gotta stop him"

Meanwhile BB is listening like "Oooohhh shit... this is gonna get awkward."

He doesn't necessarily need to want him dead. Just knows that as soon as someone is sent to do the job he will need to go Rogue... and the last thing he wants to do is have someone like Venom out there with knowledge of what went down get captured or whatever.

So of course.. you send in Solid. God I miss that guy so bad right now.

Just now thinking about this but... wasn't Jack supposed to be "The avatar for the player" when MGS2 came out? Like... we would look at SolidSnake from our, the players, point of view within the game? thinking about it... i kind of feel like MGSV is beating a fultoned horse a little bit here. (except 2 did it waaaaaaaaay better.)

This feeling is very real and may take a while to pass. You didn't get to play as Big Boss. And that sucks something fierce.

you know what would've been awesome?
Mission 46 is still the hospital....but you play it from Ishmael's POV this time. That way it doesn't feel like just playing the intro again. Plus Kojima can say you did play as Big Boss.

Considering the extent to which the game's files have been looked through at this point, has anyone checked to see how much of Mantis' face was modeled beneath the mask; as well as if his scars are there? You can see a bit more to his face here, for example.

That scenario would have been much less tedious, but looking at the circumstances surrounding the end of the game's development; what we ended up getting might have been the only realistic option. At least we'll always have mods.

Another quick question:

When does Venom find out that he is the phantom? Is it at the end of the events like we see it or is it more towards the beginning and Kojima twist?

I used to think it was a no-brainer that he got his scars when his village burned down, but seeing his full head of hair and partial face render has me second guessing that. I just replayed Twin Snakes the other day and his scars look more like they were inflicted through torture rather than burn wounds.

If this were the case, this means something happens to him between V and MGS.

Just finished mission 30. Holy shit that monologue by skullface. It felt like BB was on a city bus sitting across from a crazy person ranting about conspiracy theories.

Good Day, sir. Have you thought about Lingua Franca today?

It's like Black Lagoon where the japanese product makes less sense in japanese than in english. The Japan arc is weird in japanese.

I don't see what the point of making a reference to engrish is. It's clearly bad English, that's not something worth referencing. "It's not over yet" at least has some degree of specificity.

Maybe self/medically inflicted in an attempt to stop the leaks he kept getting?

I'd like to think this is the case. Whether morally (heh) or tactically, OP Kid Mantis is a bad idea in any hands. Him being nerfed in MGS1 is something I've been okay with, because it'd make sense for him to nerfed story wise.

That would certainly go in line with his powers in V compared to MGS and also fits in with his personality. It's pretty obvious that even fully masked it didn't stop people from leaking into his brain as a kid, so maybe he did do something to himself. It's a neat little mystery that doesn't beg to be solved, but it's interesting to speculate about.

Metal Gear Liquid would really make the most sense after V... outside MG1/MG2 remakes, of course. Eli and Mantis' relationship is something I want to see more of.

Man, just bring David and Hal back. Just have it so that Raiden and Hal used nanomachines and biotech to keep David alive.
If a game was made in between MGS1 and MGS2 or MGS2 and MGS4... I wouldn't complain. Or even better, both.

Snake and Otacon running missions for Philanthropy. Raiden saving Sunny from The Patriots. There - bam. Two extremely vague outlines for a story and a way to bring pre-cyborg Raiden and almost-prime Solid back and explain how he and Snake worked together for a time. There's enough ambiguity about these interquel years for anything to happen. The only thing set it stone is that Raiden has to get fucked up at some point, and get Sunny to Snake and Otacon.

And before people chime in "that was Rising originally", yeah it was. But that doesn't mean it isn't a good story to tell.

Actually, I'd be down for new protags in general.

Venom was a step forward in that direction, but the problem was he ended up being 10 steps backward simultaneously.

Kojima really needs to do horror. Seriously, I don't care if it isn't Silent Hills, he's clearly been itchy on the scary trigger given some of the things he's done in Metal Gear as well.
