Phil Spencer Discusses Why FFXIV Isn't on Xbox (Contradictions?)

anigif_enhanced-6862-1442302259-11.gif

hehehe

To me it seems like Spencer doesn't even know why FFXIV is not on Xbone.

I wouldn't be surprised if he confused it with World of Final Fantasy, Sony are killing it with games that are staying within their ecosystem, and with Spencer mostly needing to concentrate on keeping his platform appealing I wouldn't blame him too much for not keeping up with the opposition.

That said throwing a programmed "third party deals happen" was not the most tactful move.

Well, arent World of FF and FFVII, first on playstation ?

First, maybe permanently.

Square Enix probably don't see any benefit to putting these games onto XB1.

To me it seems like Spencer doesn't even know why FFXIV is not on Xbone.

The idea that the head of XBox doesn't know why a major title from a major third party publisher isn't on their platform has two outcomes:

1. He's bad at his job
2. He's outright lying

It may be a case that's he's mistaken, but SE have said why and Microsoft seem to have done nothing to combat that.

Nobody knows why but Naoki Yoshida, the main man behind FFXIV said MS doesn't like it.

Why wouldn't we believe Mr. Yoshida as he's stated multiple times that he would like FFXIV on Xbox and has 0 motive to lie?
i understand that. I'm questioning directly why mS would have a problem with it in the first place. I don't see what they'd lose from allowing crossplay because those will buy the xbone's will still buy them and the xbone games. But they wouldn't lose the opportunity to play with their friends who bought Ps4s. But how would allowing tht negatively impact mS?

So are people still trying to convince everybody that Phil spencer is a slimy, bad-at-his-job idiot? lol

This just seems so overboard.

I don't think anyone is trying to convince anybody of anything, but as the head of XBox he seems to have very little idea about anything that happens in terms of XBox as a brand.

I know that's not true, but that's the impression he gives and it's played out.

It's number 3.with a bit of number 2.

Microsoft want everything through Xbox Live. Spencer could just say this but that leads to follow up questions, why is that, only a negative, self serving answer or the hilarious first class experience for Xbox users he likes to wheel out so Spencer just makes up nonsense to avoid that road. Microsoft don't want to support something that can be billed outside of Xbox Live or take eyeballs away into a separate playground.

Not to bring this thread down even further, but...

Hem hem... Tim Dog recently wrote what basically amounts to an essay because of this thread and the following tweet by statham. In his harrowing tell-all he basically states that Bish is some sort of ringleader trying to take Xbox down with his crooked croonies. I won't post the full quote here, but his call to gamers that "Bias will continue and won’t stop unless you stand up against it" and "If you want answers, or you wanna rage at something, NeoGAF is the place to start the fire" is downright amazing.

He knows this is just a video game forum, right? This guy never ceases to make me laugh.

In other unrelated news. I decided to check on mr crazy(Misterxmedia) and they now have a website o_O.

the people who play the games online still have to pay for xbl though..what do you mean by this?

I've always had my PS+ sub active, but pretty sure FFXIV is completely seperate on PS4, no need to have PS+ to play FFXIV.

You still need live gold to play online with free to play and subscription games, unless they changed that recently to be on par with psn

it's its own subscription service? THAT's why mS doesn't wanna do it?

well, I guess that does make more sense if that is the case.

EA access is its own subscription service right? It is on live.

I've never had EA access. Can you subscribe through XBL. With FFXIV, you can't. Everything is done through the "Mog Station" in your browser.

Just did a quick Google search, seems you can only subscribe through xbox.com. Hmmmm

Maybe sub based mmorpgs need to be paid through live to be allowed on the console.

Not sure if you play XIV but absolutely nothing is handled through PSN. You can't use PSN credits for your subscription and the only way to can modify your account is through SE's Mog Station(lol, I just realized it looks like PlayStation but that is a coincidence since it's the same system everyone uses).

Edit: Had to fix, You can't use PSN credit.

Yeah, I did. I suppose that is the big reason then.

I don't think this is strictly true. When you log in I believe you pass through PSN (probably for authentication) before you connect to Square servers. This means that when PSN is down you cannot log in but if you are logged in already you can continue playing.

that is true. but mS wasn't going to say no when it turned out to be an exclusive service (as sony said no) and I think ea also in particularly has a good running with mS.

Correct, your PSN ID is linked with your SE ID. However you are not required to have a PS+ sub to access the game.

*goes back to playing FFXIV*

Kagari mentioned they're also helping out with FF7R

No doubt they are. Sony is helping every developer in any possible way these days.
But in the a meaningful way that would make the company consider exclusivity from Xbone? No, not really.

Xbone is just screwed by nature of no one buying it in Japan, and Japanese developers have no reason to make games that their main market won't be buying.

Meanwhile, developing on PC covers their bases for all their other Western fans that don't have PS4. There is probably a huge crossover of fanbase between PC and Xbone.

I'm here, I didn't like the dudes comment, he seemed to assume like alot of other gaffers do about MS , I vent alot on twitter, I stop posting because I went to bed and had home improvement things to do in the morning. And I don't post like I used to in any war threads, mainly sticking to OTs and off-topic. My twitter was derailing the thread, if any of you guys want to continue PM me or twitter, unless you attack me there, where I'll most likely block you.

lol
that lost tho

I was referring to any payments.

I think he's on the IGN Xbox podcast next week and IGN are being IGN by publishing numerous articles on each sentence he said during it ;)
oh, phil spencer's gonna be there?

i doubt ign'll say anything about it, considering they didn't bring up the contradictions in the OP themselves.

It'll just be good to give a bit of context to the different threads and articles this podcast has already generated. I dont think there's going to be any surprises or bombshells or anything like that, if there was then IGN would have published an article on it already.

I think the quote is from the podcast. They are basically releasing single questions/answers from it to drum up more interest.

I like IGN but I would be kind of pissed if the quote was entirely out of context.

Honestly though, at this point , were I in charge of third party licensing, I'd just let square make a port and allow them to let players play their game without XBL gold AND play on the same servers. More software is always good, even if your version might be inferior in a few ways.

Couldn't agree more. And it could really be a gateway for all of those XBO owners in the US (of which there's millions) who are single console homes.

I'm looking over articles related to FFXIV and Xbox at it seems Yoshida and Square Enix would be very very very happy to port FFXIV to Xbox as soon as Microsoft give the green light.

From I've read, Microsoft and Square Enix are pretty close in Japan and do cross-marketing with Windows and FFXIV.

In some interviews Yoshida even admits himself to be an avid Xbox gamer and said for other Xbox gamers to let Microsoft know they want FFXIV. Square Enix also said they don't mind if cross-play just means Xbox and Windows only. Sadly it seems Microsoft even rejected that cross-play option.

Most of these articles come from Dualshockers (banned source?) when they interviewed Yoshida at Gamescom 2014.

So I don't get it. Why stopping Microsoft from greenlighting FFXIV on their console? Is it because of FFXIV's subscription model.

I thought yoshida said he wants everyone to be able to play the game together; shutting playstation out wouldn't be that.

Do you have a lino you where it said the bolded. I only ask because thats almost the exact opposite of what Yoshi-P has been saying. They whole idea was to not split the player base.
