Today is peace day. Thinking of Paz. She would have been so happy...

Back to reality! Anything hidden in the game for peace day? Cant play today so would be nice to know.

Wow, I had no idea the identity of the Patriots was Payton's idea.

But it wouldn't be the first time this happened. In an old post-MGS2 interview with Kojima and Shinkawa he mentions that he originally just planned for Ocelot to have a prosthetic arm. Shinkawa came up with the arm posession and Kojima just rolled with it, because he thought, it sounded cool.

Have I missed something? What happened to Chico?
He was told be to be quiet...so he did.

Also, completely unrelated piece of fanart.

Chico is Quiet is up there with the zaniest theories I've ever heard.

MGS3's "it's all a VR simulation" seems so tame compared to what people came up with for this game.

I'm sure this is common place in storytelling for movies, games, and whatever else.

For a kid that could do all the whacked out shit he could in this game, it's super weird that Psycho Mantis got so powered down in Solid 1. Like if he was as strong in MGS as in Phantom Pain Solid would eat shit an hour in and the game would end.

It is sorta neat that Liquid knowing Mantis and Kaz and his relationship with them in TPP makes some shit in MGS1 a little weightier.

It's really left ambiguous whatever happens to Mantis after the events of TPP. His face is all messed up by the time of MGS1. His head looks like it's been messed with too (possibly his powers were neutered by the Russians who he goes to work for as a psychic soldier and later as a KGB agent...just a theory I came up with, maybe he even wanted his power neutering considering how much he hates the human race by MGS1). There's also the fact that his mind gets warped by a serial killer's at some point, which fuels his hunger for killing.

Gotta say, everything involving Quiet in MGS is just terrible--even ignoring the 'shame' stuff, she poisons everything she touches. Not even Snake could resist it, getting poisoned because he saw through his blind spot and defended himself with the wrong arm. I don't even think she has a circulatory system, how could a snake bite even hurt her? C'mon, Boss!

That mission is badly designed and counter to everything else in the game. The thing is, in the final phase of the battle there are two tanks, with one arriving before and one after the helicopter, that are essentially super tanks. These two super tanks have super-cannons that one-shot Snake from any angle; further, their cannons are the only weapons (I know of) capable of piercing cover or obstacles like walls. This means that it's impossible to take cover from them as you fight--you have to let Quiet grab their attention as you sit far away, hidden, or else risk an instant game over when they get a decent shot off. It took me forever to get through that mission.

In retrospect, an easy answer is to just call in airstrikes, I'd assume they work well.

My solution was a lot of fultoning, with a weather change (sandstorm) when the tanks arrived so I could fulton those as well--unfortunately, too much trial and error was involved for me to recommend this strategy to anyone else.

If you decide to follow my stratagy:
  1. Fulton the missle thing that arrives in the middle of the battlefield. Just rush towards it from the checkpoint and it won't be able to do much. Be sure to shoot the soldier running up from the left, because he'll bother you during the next step otherwise. The shielded soldier that arrives after him is of no concern.
  2. Go towards the right of the battlefield and prepare to fulton the guntank arriving on that side; when it stops to deploy troops is your chance to strike.
  3. Rush to the left side of the battlefield and throw a grenade behind the guntank, where it has deployed troops. Fulton it.
  4. Now take a breather--rush behind the building because the first super tank will be arriving. If it hits you even once, you're dead.
  5. Call in a sandstorm while Quiet draws their fire. Once the sandstorm arrives, and not before, approach the super tank (the only 'Tank' on the battlefield) from the far right of the battlefield. Check to see where its cannon is aiming--if it's at you, hide; if it's at Quiet, run behind the tank and then straight at it. Note that if an enemy sees you while you're doing this the super tank will be alerted to your presence and it will be over--their machine guns will cut you down before you can get close enough.
  6. Quickly fulton the super tank from behind and then go back the way you came. Done correctly, veiled by the sandstorm, the enemy won't be aware of you at all.
  7. A helicopter will arrive, signalling the final stretch of the battle. A super tank and two guntanks won't be far behind it, so stay covered and out of sight. Wait for the helicopter to get in range and begin patrolling between the left and right of the battlefield, then attack it with missle weapons.
  8. Once the helicopter starts to retreat or is destroyed, hide and call in a second sandstorm if necessary. (I had one occur naturally after this, so I never needed to.)
  9. By now the second super tank and a pair of guntanks will have arrived. They'll be attacking Quiet. Approach the super tank the same as before, and then the rest is up to you. The two guntanks and the remaining infantry will be a piece of cake with the super tanks out of the way.

Now some info to make the fight easier:
  • Electro-mines can useful. Deploy them on the left and right roads, close to the building, to make fultoning the vehicles easier.
  • Guntanks. They have a minimum range--they're completely defenseless once you're closer than five meters. With a speed upgrade, Snake can also outrun them, which makes getting beside them trivial. Lastly, these guntanks deploy 3 soldiers each and no more.
  • The Quiet situation. Quiet will likely take damage before she decides to move. The super tanks are the real threat, though any vehicle can harm her. While Quiet is more than capable of taking out a lone tank or two on her own, she won't last long if left to her own devices--three or four super tank hits will kill her and immediately end the mission. So draw fire if you need to.
  • Long-barreled God-tanks. Super tanks have deadly accurate machineguns with no minimum range, and unparalleled power in their cannons. Your rocket launcher will do minimal harm so forget conventional weaponry. Worst of all, as mentioned before, thier cannon pierces all kinds of cover. You will not be able to avoid their attacks for long, so never bother risking it.
  • NVG are your friend. Be sure to tag the super tanks so you know exactly where they are. And note that all of the armoured vehicles have very obvious tells as to who they're targetting, so just glance at their weapons to see who has aggro.
All from memory... I hope the hours I spent completing the mission were worth it to someone, because it sure didn't help me.

if you stay inside the building, you can simply wait for the one-hit shots to miss and then attack before retreating again until the one-hit shot misses again.

Wow, I had no idea the identity of the Patriots was Payton's idea..

me neither, is there a source for this?

i recall a really long-winded argument about the mgs3 radio crew -> patriots thing being in the plans during mgs3s development. I argued that it makes no sense and the characters don't at all behave in a fashion that would suggest they'd go on to become villains

After the fourth time being hit through the wall I decided to find a different approach.

There's simply no safe spot you can attack from unless those cargo contain myths are true. Even then, if it misses the container and hits near you, you're dead. The entire 'fight' is a roll of the die. It's horrible.

Yeah.

This game made me feel weird. It's like...I don't think I would have an issue with the story or characters if they just...finished things or altered things. Like, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 do away with. One game. Intersperse the missions properly within the other missions so that I don't torture Quiet right after playing in the rain with her right after she risks her life for a wooden token. Have Boss TALK IN CUTSCENES MORE he talks in almost all the Chapter 2 ones and that was FINE. Making him talk or have a dialogue during Skull-face's jeep monologue would've made that whole scene FINE. Spread the tape shit out over the course of the missions. Don't make the "voice of reason" that's supposed to show you Big Boss is becoming an a-hole a fucking traitor who literally does everything wrong and is the worst person in the game.

Like...I genuinely liked most of Chapter 2, it was filled with the whacked out bullshit I play Metal Gear games for, but everything just felt hollow or out of place or unfinished or not tied together well or whatever. Everything felt like it would be awesome if just one or two things were changed. But since everything had like one or two things that were off, it all added up and made the whole game off. Like, I genuinely thought Quiet's whole storyline was fucking excellent but told sooooooo poorly due to game design and mission structure and a non-vocal Boss.

I even like the twist! I even like the parasites! I even like Skull-face's motivation! I play Metal Gear Solid games for the cuh-razy bullshit! It was right up my alley! I can run with all of that shit!

I dunno. It just feels like a great big blue ball, like almost every time you're close to reaching the best part it stops and falls flat.

if you stand far back enough inside the palace, you won't get hit by it. but you cannot attack when you're back this far. i just waited until the attack missed, ran up. shot one rocket, retreated. and just repeated that over and over until they were dead. none of the shots ever came close

Ain't tellin you no myths. It's the way I played the mission.

I called in Air Support to distract the tanks and just went to town in them. I only died once.

RIP Pequod x 3.
Pequod was cloned way more than Big Boss ever was

.

Honestly, it would have been fine even if he just did the classic Metal Gear thing of repeating the last thing Skullface said.

"Vocal cord parasites?"

"English strain?"

"Sahalanthropus?!"

Anything would have been better than the completely awkward silence and misplaced music usage.

The silence was better because even Venom knows better than to validate this bozo's rantings and ravings.

From what I recall around that time, Ryan Payton proposed the retcon idea to Kojima for the MGS3 codec squad being the Patriots during MGS4's development, and Kojima thought it was clever and rolled with it.

Shame on him then, because turning the The Patriots into the support team from Metal Gear Solid 3 is undoubtedly the worst idea they've ever had. The moment this plot twist was revealed was the moment Metal Gear Solid 4 and the story of the entire franchise jumped the shark. The Patriots was such a cool element too, why did they feel it was necessary to fuck it up like that?
I love the logic between some of these character changes, Para Medic was a doctor so I guess it makes sense that she's also one of the greatest scientific geniuses who ever lived, and Sigint is black so he can be the Darpa chief. Hilarious.

i agree with your sentiment, but sigint was always supposed to be donald anderson

This retcon was probably the most egregious to me, considering there's such a small amount of notable black characters in the Metal Gear universe, and they had to reduce that even further by merging two completely different characters into one.

For the tank bullshit mission, I just ended up sprinting from side to side behind the building. Run around the left side and fire a shot > immediately sprint all the way around the back > run around the right side and fire a shot > and so on.

Was anyone else really dissapointed in the lack of locations?

I thought there would be atleast 3... I really wanted a snow level.

But when they give up Africa so early in the game (around mission 12 I think), I thought around maybe 20-25 would unlock another... It's a shame :(

Yeah that strategy works well. I beat it on my first try doing something similar. I didn't shoot from the right side, just the left.

Really? I can't remember that.

You sure about this? I remember the credits saying he joined ARPA but I've played MGS3 quite a bit over the years and I don't remember his real name ever being mentioned.

Shit, am I dreaming this? I could've sworn there was a part where Sigint mentions his name is Donald and he was made fun of for it. I'm looking for it, but can't find it. I must be mistaken.

A codec converstation he mentions his name, Donald. Credits it shows up as him helping establish ARPA, which later becomes DARPA (or joining it, one or the other).

His real name is never mentioned in 3.

Also, if you're looking to complete the extra tasks in mission 45, use weather modification to create sandstorms. Makes things easier, and let me extract everything and keep Quiet from taking damage.

You know, I didn't follow much of the hype train and watched only one or two trailers and read up on only on a few things here and there. However, I could swear reading that it would have 6 or so large open world areas. So, it was a huge surprise and even bigger disappointment when I realised it was just 2. I really got bored by the time the mission count hit the late 20s. At that point it hit me that I was wrong and this was all there was.

I was at the very least expecting three locations as well.

I was hoping that Kojima wouldn't have shown all of the features.

From late-game gadgets, to cosmetic items, it's a shame there wasn't more in the game for me to be surprised by.

This isn't really relevant to what you posted, but it reminded me of something. Being from Cyprus the voice actors that spoke the Cypriot dialect did a very good job. Pretty surreal seeing that attention to detail put in there from the territories that they spoke of and such. Kudos on Kojima for going into something like that, that only a few people would notice.

Didn't they speak in standard Greek? I understood every word of it.

I'm not too familiar with Cypriot dialect and its differences with Greek but I was in Larnaca this summer and could barely understand what they were saying at times.

The way Chico is so quickly tossed aside in this game makes me wonder if he was going to be Quiet but they changed their minds once it became the big running joke.

Doesn't Code Talker say the parasite cure turns male to female?

Like 'the cure turns the parasite to all female, to make sure it doesn't reproduce, and it also turns the host to female'

Then nothing like that happens, right? I thought that's what he meant and then I was like'oh shit it might be Chico oh no'

No. The Walbachia turns the parasites to female so they can't reproduce anymore. Humans aren't effected that way because they are a more complex organism. However they turn infertile.

Nobody on Motherbase is going to have children in the future. Thanks Boss.

In my headcanon I'm just going to pretend that it was Skullface who decided to blast "Sins of the Father" and just stare down Snake to try and intimidate him or something. Much funnier that way.
