As I said in the other game, I could do nothing but complain about and make fun of the story in this thread, but I still greatly enjoyed the game. I have some key problems with Gameplay, but if I called this game "bad" for having a bad story while openly confessing that I love big dumb sandbox games like Just Cause, well, I'd be a hypocrite then.

The "ending" sure leaves a bad taste in your mouth, and I think the wheels fall off of the gameplay a bit in the second chapter, but it's still a ridiculously solid game.

But what else could it really do? There's only so many stories that Metal Gear can tell. There's only so many "OMG THIS NEW METAL GEAR WILL RULE THE WORLD!!" There's only so many things that the series can tie up at this point, and the last thing it need is MORE loose ends.

The Skullface story was simple, and something like MGS3 is leaps and bounds ahead of it, but that's kind of what this game needed. It didn't need to give us a big complex story that could potentially fuck up the timeline even more. Comparing MGS4's climax to MGS5'S just doesn't seem fair. 4 was attempting to resolve the entire Metal Gear story, where as 5's was just to give more context into what Big Boss was doing at that time and Mother Base/Outer Haven.

Honestly, the Ground Zeroes incident alone would be enough to turn Big Boss into the "demon" we know in MG1&2, and enough to turn him against Zero and Cipher even further to the point to where his state in MG1 makes sense. That is why I like the twist myself. Like another poster stated, put a great emphasis on "legends", but more than that, it shows that Big Boss has already made up his mind. He doesn't need to go through more shit to become the villain he was in MG1&2. He already killed his mentor and possibly his lover, was put through hell in Costa Rica for attempting to help and had to go through watching his mentor die again as an AI, was attacked by Cipher from the inside, and then once AGAIN later, the second time having his entire base and so many soldiers lives lost. All of which was orchestrated by powers beyond his control, no matter how strong he became.

Because of that, the twist makes a lot of sense to me. Where as in reality, the real Big Boss has been tired of this shit a long time ago, Venom has the abilty to do something different. In the end, he too ends up becoming part of the horror, just like Big Boss. It's unavoidable, and Big Boss understands that now. None of this story even really needed to be told. We just wanted to see it. Venom gave us a game, where Big Boss didn't need to. And that to me makes much more sense.

That's why you either reboot the series completely, or stop doing games altogether.

Results of the poll.

I vote for 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 all at once.

I still need more hours into Phantom Pain but it's crazy that Bloodborne and Phantom Pain may both be in my top 10 of all time. I've gone years without having a game crack the op 10 and I may get two in 2015. Hell of a year and it's not even over yet.

That's why you either reboot the series completely, or stop doing games altogether.

Or give us MGS5, which makes a lot of fans and new players very happy without really even fucking up the timeline or story at all, all while at least giving hardcore fans a bit more context.

Not sure if this is something or if it's been discussed. Anybody know what the glinting thing is when you first use the binocs in the Afghanistan Intro? I feel like it's there at first and then goes away. Maybe Quiet?

I think it's just diamonds.

Bloodborne, Phantom Pain, Witcher 3... it really has been a damn good year so far.

Put me in the camp of loving the twist the more I think about it. So. Add another one to the handful I guess.

It's Metal Gear. I'd be disappointed if it didn't have something like that in it.

Yeah I was wondering that but it seems to blink too fast for diamonds and I marked them but when I got there, there were no diamonds. And also the blinking stopped at one point. I just GIF'd this from the Metal Gear Scanlon for reference.

It's way too large too I think. I don't know. Just seemed intriguing when I first saw it and was reminded while watching the Metal Gear Scanlon.

While traversing the game in free roam I'm starting to realize how underutilized the open-world is.

There's literally nothing to do in the open-world outside outposts and camps except hunting animals and picking flowers. Red Dead Redemption is also a game that have a pretty big barren world but at least that game had NPCs, bandits and random events happening outside towns.

Like, why aren't there any rebels/soviets/PF soldiers out and moving about in the world? Wouldn't it be cool to occasionally see a group of soldiers out in the wild, sitting around a bonfire or something and when they go asleep at night you could go in and steal their resources and fulton them? Why can't you find random soldiers/rebels that got injured by animals or shot out in the open-world that you can save? A few NPCs giving you rescue missions or side-ops? Small events and things like that would make the open-world feel a lot more alive and interesting than how it is currently.

Maybe if Phantom Pain had some bosses or interesting enemies to fight, but I'm 30 hours in and the entire game has been sneak, tranquilize, fulton -- rinse & repeat -- all with really forgiving stealth mechanics that don't require any advanced tactics as far as I know. At least PW had co-op and some boss battles.

Getting S ranks in PW actually required you to memorize patrol paths and sometimes move as fast as possible. So far I've S-ranked the first 20 missions of Phantom Pain and it has been a cakewalk. You can even get spotted and go non-lethal, and as long as you didn't spend 10 minutes wandering around you'll get the S.

Im going to agree with this the bosses in MGSV are really are lackl luster for me. Quite was ok but I felt the end was done better and felt more like a sniper duel. The skulls got boring as hell after a while, and Metal gear...well its Metal gear. You dont need bosses to be in depth, look at MGS3, the characters barely had a back story but I felt they were unique and still drove the game for me as well.

So why the White Mamba mission has [REPLAY] in front of it? I thought it was because the first time I put Liquid to sleep and didn't see the cutscene, so i replayed it and did the fight but it still says [REPLAY] near it.

I'm near the end of the game (Sahelanthropus stolen was the the last event), I guess I have just the last 3 "plot missions" left (I already know the twist etc)

It's Metal Gear. I'd be disappointed if it didn't have something like that in it.

Then you misunderstand why people don't like it. It's not because "But guyz its kerazy kojima breaking the forth wall" its because it lacks quality. It's lazily foreshadowed, paced and contains an 11th hour M.night twist but worse in that takes away from the game instead of adding to it. It was nothing. It was a twist for a twists sake with no deeper meaning. And the meaning it does have was done better in MGS2.

Game needed a snowy Russian area. Or just a snow area in general. Would've been cool to have snowstorms. A lot of the tileset is very dry and barren even in Africa.

It's lazily foreshadowed, paced and contains an 11th hour M.night twist but worse that takes away from the game instead of adding to it.
This sentence is contradictory. It was either foreshadowed or it was an 11th hour twist... it can't really be both. The twist was very obviously foreshadowed, pretty much everyone thought the initial avatar creation scene at the end was weird/off.

As far as it adding something to the overall story or having a deeper meaning... I sort of disagree with that as well because it's clearly a way to explain the double Big Boss situation in MG1/MG2. Maybe not the best explanation but it is something. It's also the opposite twist of MGS2, not a ditto copy of it (Raiden becomes his own person whereas Venom assimilates further into being Big Boss), in fact it's better to say it's the opposite of the Raiden situation.

I do agree that it was poorly written and paced throughout but it wasn't just a "GOTCHA" twist they threw in there, it was a twist that had some purpose despite the execution.

The poll is severely lacking a "Kojima played us like a damn fiddle!!!!" opinion.

More like "Kojima has forgotten how to play a fiddle".

Alright. making a new poll. Tell me options guys, that you would like to see.

So far

  • TPP is a masterpiece
  • This is not Kojimas Magnesium Opah
  • Kojima fiddled us like Yo Yo Ma plays the cello
  • WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
  • New metal... broken gear. This game has amazing gameplay, but broken story.
  • The salt on this poll is at a new high.
  • Kojima could be an oscar nominee writer. That story was GOAT.
  • I am new to the series. Have no idea whats going on. Love the game.
  • I am a vet of the series. Love the gameplay. Have no idea whats going on.
  • I am heart broken that Silent Hills is not gonna happen.
  • TPP is game of the decade.
  • TPP is the best MGS in the series.
  • TPP could be perfect if Hayter was in it.
  • TPP Keifer is better than Hayter
  • MGS has always been a divisive game. Guys.. just get over it.

EDIT. new entries

  • TPP is good because of Parasites
  • TPP is good because of Nanomachines
  • TPP is like copulation. But better.
  • TPP where is Chico? and why is he not Quiet?

I wonder what it would be like if there weren't last gen versions of the game. Like how far all that budget talk and cut content stuff would have gone without it.

Same. The MGS2-esque fan outrage and the literal unattainable "Peace" are icing on the cake for me.

Its glorious in its metal gear way.

How is it lazily foreshadowed when the foreshadowing goes back to the Moby Dick thing?

Kojima literally foreshadowed the twist himself in real life.

It's a small diamond. Diamond is on the roof on the sandbag next to the small antenna.

The exessive blinking is because it's a tutorial segment to make sure you're looking at the right direction.

From reading through the thread it seems more like people are upset with Metal Gear's story in general at this point. With the way the story chose to go in stuff like MGS4, and how that affected the other games including MGS5.

You and I sound like we're on the same page to be honest. The only "negative" thing I could ever say about my experience with V is that it's clear Kojima wanted to do more in a variety of ways. It feels like the "more" that he probably wanted to do and it not being present in the final game most likely has to have something to do with his relationship with Konami and whatever strange stuff has been going on. It'd be cool if it's something we'll hear more about in the future. But the unfortunate truth is that we most likely never will, and what's done is done.

How is it lazily foreshadowed when the foreshadowing goes back to the Moby Dick thing?

People guessed the twist a year ago and the game gives the most non-subtle hints like everyone didn't guess the twist. I was actually expecting it to be a bluff it was being so obvious.

Pretty sure it's just to force the player to look at the goal, isn't it? Since it's the first time you're on that map you wouldn't know where you're supposed to look without it.

Alrighty. Thanks for the clarification.

I think the fact that some MGS fans are seriously waiting for a story update/Tom ruse cruise goes to show just how unfulfilling this game is compared to past MGS games.

Then you misunderstand why people don't like it. It's not because "But guyz its kerazy kojima breaking the forth wall" its because it lacks quality. It gave us a cool story that we didn't even really need to see with some cool info about what was happening at the time, cemented Big Boss' character better than if we would have played him most likely, fits into MG1 and 2 rather nicely, and puts the "legends" of Metal Gear on complete blast.

Has there been any word on story related DLC for the game? I haven't been following any of the game's post release content news.

Here's another line:

"I won't scatter MY sorrow into the heartless sea"

Marketing was about "the missing link" whereas the game goes on to answer one very specific question (how Big Boss survived dying in MG1) while ignoring/shitting on everything else. Does nothing but dilute Big Boss's character by him maybe potentially being a bad guy off screen all the while having cut content for a very prominent story thread.

Totally unsatisfactory.

So, first..HI!

I just finished the game and well came to see if I understood things right and give my 2 cents. I know V. Snake is a body double for BB, but are we confident he's not Gray Fox? I guess it would be weird for Solid to not recognise GF and BB have the same face if that is the case. The white eye was just a red herring then?

I should caveat my POV in that while I do enjoy MGS games, I've never fully embraced the story. I'm not die-hard into it so I even forgot which eye BB had injured for instance.

When first watching the twist play out, I did think that VS becomes the 'bad' BB, while NS remains the 'good' BB behind the scenes, so basically everything in MG1 & 2 was VS. But then Ocelot tells BB to start Outer Heaven and Kaz says he'll raise VS and SS to fight 'real' BB, so maybe MG1 is VS as leader of FoxHound telling Solid to kill 'real' BB, while MG2 is VS taking over after assuming 'real' BB died in MG1.

A quick read through this thread though tells me people think end-game BB in MG1 is VS and BB in MG2 is NS. I dunno, maybe there's no point in trying to pinpoint a plot arc I don't particularly like (the whole body double thing).

With Quiet and Mission 45 (I hated that mission), doesn't she infect VS by speaking English? Isn't that the whole point to her remaining silent? I'm confused as to why VS doesn't get infected.

As for the overall game, I put 80+ hours into it, but come away feeling not really satisfied. Only 2 real boss fights in my eyes, which pale compared to their versions in other MGSs, bummed me out. I didn't particularly like the episodic nature of things (which is why Mission 11 starts off great). The story was slow and pedantic, with the plot picking up slowly and then slowing down quickly. SkullFace and his ending was underwhelming. The whole dynamic of Ocelot, Miller and Boss, together with Quiet and Huey felt very weak too. I guess I expected more, what we got from the game wasn't that much more than was shown in trailers, and I stopped following those a while ago.

Gameplay was a mixed bag. I didn't like the early parts. Then R&D got underway and variety opend up more AND more importantly, it was less punishing to play sneaky. Then you start to realise the mission objective is practically the same for 90% of the missions, ie eliminate or extract someone/something, and depending on your playstyle, those can end up being the same thing. It doesn't help that I feel like GZ had the best base to infiltrate and play around in, even though I barely played more than the main story.

I do like how the enemies adapt to your playstyle, but that didn't really change much in the end.

ok.. lets finish this list. Should be the greatest poll of all time. greater than tpp perhaps.Only time will tell.
