Another year where time commitment and short attention span for traditional network fare dictates that I'll be watching predominantly shorter season "premium" fare. And Netflix/Amazon stuff.

Aside from Outlander, anything worth watching on Starz? What about Showtime? I've got three months of each for free with my internet service.

List
Narcos
Sense8
Fargo
The Bastard Executioner
Man in the High Castle
The Expanse
Humans
The Muppets
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Lots of catching up, a few new shows. Only The Muppets from broadcast.

Black Sails is worth a watch on Starz. It's a smart pirate drama. Rarely does anything involving pirates deal with how political they were on their ships, and Black Sails does it well. It just finished its second season, which was amazing. So much payoff from the first season, and wonderfully done.

Showtime has Penny Dreadful. Another show that really came into its own in its sophomore season.

Current programs on Starz:
Da Vinci's Demons - Didn't do it for me, too gritty
Black Sails - Didn't do it for me, too gritty
Power - Didn't do it for me, too gritty
Outlander - I think this is marginally decent
Survivor's Remorse - It's shocking that a dumb comedy executive produced by Lebron James about his own life is this good
The Missing - This is great, but also a foreign import
Blunt Talk - I think this is a lot smarter than it gets credit for. Still hasn't really settled into being a "good show", but I think it'll probably get there.

Previous programs on Starz:
Boss - Most people would say it didn't do it for them, because it was too gritty. But I think it was enjoyable if melodramatic.
Camelot - Didn't do it for me, too dull
Crash - Didn't do it for me, just not any good
Magic City - Didn't really do it for me, too dull
Pillars of the Earth - Decent miniseries, although I'm not really a big Ken Follett reader normally.
Spartacus - Didn't do it for me, too gritty
The White Queen - Didn't do it for me, too dull
Gravity - Didn't do it for me, just awful (cc ivysaur12)
Party Down - excellent comedy, well worth watching.

Current programs on Showtime:
Homeland - I think this is pretty bad, but less bad than it was a little while ago, but a lot more bad than it was to start with. Watch the first season-ish.
Ray Donovan - Didn't really do it for me, too gritty
Masters of Sex - I should like this but I don't
The Affair - This is a great, taut drama. I bet the second season will be a stinker.
Episodes - One of those funny-not funny comedies. Not really a dramedy either though.
Shameless - First several seasons are quite good, I think Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Allen White, and Joan Cusack especially are great. Kinda lost interest after a while.
House of Lies - I like this more than a lot of people, it has a kind of sexy edgy vibe to it. The end of season 1 is really well shot. I'm a bit behind and it's not a must watch, but I liked it more than most people did.

Stuff that's aired on Showtime in the last ten or so years:
Happyish - I'm the only person on earth who liked this, but to me it was this great, angry, neurotic, intellectual show. Like I Heart Huckabees on PCP or a very angry and more clever Mad Men
Web Therapy - Take it or leave it
The Borgias - I got burned out on The Tudors
The Big C - Not great but not terrible
Nurse Jackie - Got about 5 too many seasons
United States of Tara - Decent main performance, not much else
Californication - Got about 5 too many seasons
The Tudors - Got about 2 too many seasons
Dexter - Got about 6 too many seasons
Weeds - Got about 5 too many seasons
Huff - This was pretty smart, Hank Azaria's lead is fun
The L Word - Got about 2 too many seasons
Dead Like Me - The best thing that's ever aired on Showtime

Another vote for Black Sails. Thought keep in mind the first little chunk of episodes are the weakest, it takes a bit to get going and really figure itself out, and the second season is a massive improvement over the first.

And Party Down, if you've never seen it.

By the way, New Girl S1 is ok, S2 is amazing because it's the Schmidt show and he's just amazeballs... then things start to go downhill pretty fast.

The Affair - This is a great, taut drama. I bet the second season will be a stinker.

I liked the first season a lot so I hope this isn't the case. They mentioned that the new season will have stories told from the perspective of other main characters as well, which should be interesting. The only question is how long can you drag out a story about an affair. Hopefully they'll manage to gracefully transition away from their basic premise like the Good Wife did.

Once again, Adobe Digital Index has a list of the top TV shows of the fall on social media:

In ascending order, the top 5 most discussed shows have been ABC’s The Muppets, ABC’s Quantico, CBS’ Supergirl, NBC’s Heroes Reborn, and Fox’s Scream Queens.

Last year, the top five shows on social media were Constantine, Gotham, The Flash, NCIS New Orleans, and How To Get Away With Murder.

Other takeaways from the study: The networks are following Cable TV trends by tending to specialize in certain types of programming. Fox is animation, ABC dominates drama, NBC dominates similarly with reality, especially The Voice, CBS with comedies, and the CW with fantasy shows like Vampire Diaries and The Flash/Arrow. Further, scripted TV and reality have vastly different social media footprints, with scripted series seeing a continuous discussion, and reality spiking during broadcasts, suggesting that advertisers can take advantage of targeted ads on television and social media, with impulse purchases in mind during reality show airings.

I'm thinking Quantico will get the axe this year. On the other hand, that would mean they'll cancel all their new shows outside of The Muppets and The Catch.

And it looks like Limitless got one interesting episode before turning into crime of the week.

Late response to the Starz and Showtime recommendation because GAF is blocked at work...holy crap! Thanks so much guys. Looks like two or three shows I'm going to check out.

Wow, I didn't expect that Castle drop. I'm not watching it anymore, but it's still shocking that a procedural with a large fanbase lost so much in a year.

It'll be interesting to see how long Fox keep Minority Report around for given that it's Spielberg and I doubt the network will want to piss him off by yanking the show off after three episodes.

But in saying that, will Fox really want Gotham proceeding a show that will probably be pulling a 0.8 in the demo by next week?

A good debut for Blindspot though as it managed to retain most of The Voice's audience. I think that's as good a start as any.

Well Gotham is a series premiere
Most shows don't keep up that number

But it is a drop from the end of season 1 as well.

And really only has down to go

Eh. It's not great, especially since it was down on the season finale, but given the competition (MNF primarily) it's not surprising.

I don't think we'll see the ratings will dwindle down to a 1.0 anytime soon and seeing Minority Reports numbers I think that Fox will be very thankful of a 1.5 in the demo a few weeks from now.

Yeah, that is surprising. My wife and I still really enjoy it though. Last night's episode had a couple of laughable moments where the Esposito character was made into a little too much of a badass (knock down door and shooting while sliding).

A conversation last night with my wife.
Wife: So CSI is having a two hour finale, and that's it!
Me: *sigh of relief* Huh.

Another show to check off the list from watching. I hope that'll mean more videogame time.

Didn't Terra Nova have considerably better ratings than Minority Report, and that show was given the axe by season's end?

I really wanted to like Minority Report, but it didn't do it for me. Oh well. I haven't watched the premier of Gotham yet, but those numbers are disappointing as I enjoyed last season. Also still have to watch Blindspot, but good to see it's not DOA, because I like the leads.

Didn't Terra Nova have considerably better ratings than Minority Report, and that show was given the axe by season's end?

There was a whole host of factors keeping Terra Nova on air beyond its ratings 'sell by date'.

It cost a fortune to make (at one point tearing up the sets because they were too close to Avatar), it was the first drama production in Fox's mega money deal with former News Corp power exec Peter Cherin and, IIRC, it was really all they had that season.

Given that Fox are splitting Minority Report with Paramount they might feel better about just cutting it loose rather than trying to salvage a win for their own Fox TV studio.

I always dreamed of a Minority Report TV show and I had been looking forward to such a thing for a while, so it'll be interesting watching the premiere, but those numbers aren't filling me with hope.

Empire prediction. if it doesn't beak the season 1 finale rating then the show will bomb. also we should get a catch title up for Sleepy Hollows after the 3rd episode.

So yeah Blindspot pulled a 3.1

NBC execs ordering truckloads of cocaine probably, they think they've been saved.

I dunno. Last season was really bad. It basically went from a show that I had on in the background and half paid attention to a show that I forget it's even on.

So yeah Blindspot pulled a 3.1

Guessing that's a very soft 3.1 that will evaporate quickly, but then there's the Blacklist, so what do I know?

The only solution is to cancel Minority Report and bring back Terra Nova.

Happyish - I'm the only person on earth who liked this, but to me it was this great, angry, neurotic, intellectual show. Like I Heart Huckabees on PCP or a very angry and more clever Mad Men

I actually liked it, too. I'm an old and jaded creative so I was pretty much the target audience.

There isn't even a thread on NeoGAF about Minority Report and I went searching for one....

I think the people who would have been the most excited to watch it probably watched the widely pirated pilot screener that's been out for a few months, and I suspect they are no longer most excited to watch it LOL.

Geez, a 1.1 for Minority Report and a 1.6 for Gotham? Fox to go out of business soon?

I watched Minority Report and Blindspot last night and didn't feel enthusiastically positive or negative about either of them. Minority Report already feels like it's played out its premise and the mystery they threw in there at the end was lame (our brother will lead us all to doom but HOWWWW), but the leads were decently entertaining to watch do their thing. I wouldn't mind watching it again next week, but I also fully expect it to die an ignominious death — not just because the debut ratings apparently were a dumpster fire, but also because it's a sci-fi show on Fox. I wonder if people have simply given up on watching Fox sci-fi shows because they know how they'll end: early and with heartbreak.

Hilariously, Blindspot is a retooled Blacklist, as pointed out by my girlfriend: It's got a fish-out-of-water woman who doesn't remember her past and is the key to solving a new case each week and she's paired up with a dude who may or may not hold the key to discovering who she is. (I mean, even the titles of the shows are similar ... both end in a T and begin with a BL and are two syllables.) They both debuted in the same timeslot on the same network. NBC, pls, we know you'd like a do-over with how you treated Blacklist but try not to make it so obvious. The biggest difference is that Blindspot doesn't have James Spader, nor does it have as much style as Blacklist, so I don't know that it'll be a better show. Maybe it'll live on its two leads having more sex appeal than Blacklist's though, going by my girlfriend's comments about the lead cop dude.

Overall I think Minority Report was mostly inoffensive and just competent. Also just not as bad as the key art that came out made it seem to be. The only thing is Blindspot seems to have more confidence in itself and is less likely to fall deeper into the pit of "precrime of the week" that MR might fall into. If it doesn't get axed anyway.

Blindspot actually felt like it leaned more towards an action thriller whereas MR seems straight up sci-fi crime mystery show. Which I know the latter won't be watched cause nerds are vindictive people and sure hate their procedurals.

I also never watched MR the movie myself.

Season 1 was literally 10 hours of set up so i would hope season 2 pays off.

I haven't checked out S2 yet because i am afraid going to be 10 more hours of politics and payoff/build up for another non piratey pirate season. I just want some swash buckling high seas action dang it

Can a network really live off of one show and football? I guess we'll see.

On a related note, I do think bringing Empire back in the fall (rather than keeping it as a spring show) was the right call. It was a big enough hit that it deserved to be a fall show, and striking while the iron is hot necessitated a quicker turnaround.
