Nvidia's putting full-fat desktop GTX 980s into notebooks

Lol, wtf

Probably using the best chips like what AMD is doing with the R9 nano.

Well one good reason for all the plastic is that anybody interested in spending 3 grand on a gaming laptop would want it to be upgradable to a degree. The Razer Blades are nice for people who want a bit of both worlds.

If i would spend $3000 to a gaming laptop, i would like it to look and feel the part too. I'm sure it was very expensive to design these but they still all look very cheaply made. Also, aren't most of the upgradeable parts just behind hatches in the bottom?

Not saying I would ever use a gaming laptop as a work laptop, but I would want to, say, be able to play a game on a plane or something without it frying my lap.

You actually don't want to put these on your lap, the term laptop is just habitual, these are notebooks.

Just like Workstation Notebooks, these should be placed on a desk or table.

This is great news for HTPC form factor devices as they can finally have a decent GPU. I wouldn't want one in a laptop though if they are going to look like that ASUS monstrosity.

The 8 GB is interesting but is not particularly relevant as the GPU will run out of horsepower way before even 4 GB RAM would be needed. It's not exactly something that is going to run 4K.

For fucks sake can't they put these amazing specs in a nice looking laptop? Is that too much to ask? Who the hell likes the appearance of these gaming laptops apart from my 12 year old brother and his friends?
Agreed. That Asus looks the ass end of K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider.

Unless they have 4K G-Sync screens it will be a waste of power unless you hook it up to a monitor but at that point why bother with a laptop im saying this and I don't even have a desktop!
These are going to be ridiculously expensive and forget taking these anywhere you can't plug it in becuase I'm guessing battery life will be horrible.
Saying that I wouldn't mind seeing these GPU's in a Steambox or Alienware Alpha.

Considering the 980 on desktop (which will be invariably higher clocked and not thermal limited) is not the best thing for 4k... why does this set up seem pointless UNLESS it is 4k?
That ASUS looks abhorrent, like a rejected design for Robot Wars or something!

It eliminates the competition by wedging underneath them and flipping them on their backs.

The cost is too prohibitive, and it's just not practical. The battery life will be like 30 minutes on full power. You are definitely going to have to plug this into an outlet. You would do better getting an ITX case that allows a full size graphics card and a monitor. This stuff is just a waste of money.

Back when the Core ix line was still pretty new, my Mom got a laptop with a full i7 in it. The thing ran really hot and had recurring issues with overheating. I'm pretty sure that the battery life wasn't that great, either.

Putting a full desktop part in a laptop was a bad idea then, and it's still a bad idea now.

Way to miss the point entirely. These are made to be plugged into the wall. It's more of a portable desktop if anything. It's also so you don't have to carry around a monitor, cords and a case full of components.

I would. I could easily edit video and do motion graphics in my hotel room with these, and also play my entire Steam collection when I'm done. :P

Like I said, Alienware 13 with the "Alienware Graphics Amplifier" case and put a GTX 980 on it, you use the case at home and run games at full, and use your Alienware 13 alone when outside and it runs new games fine at medium/high settings.

When I am playing video games, I definitely make sure my monitor and case are done in full make up and wearing high heels. They gotta look pretty.

I guess some of us actually care about the presentation of our gear and abodes. Ugly 'gamer' style gear is an off-putting and embarrassing blemish.

So instead of running around with 1 device that requires one outlet, you think people should have 2 devices needing two outlets.

I actually have a gaming laptop. I get it. I didn't miss the point. They still are a waste of money.

Not really notebooks though are they? More like portable desktops. They all seem to be 17" which unfortunately makes them useless to me. Might as well buy/build a small desktop/mino ITX. But it's cool that this is a thing.

Same thing happens with mechanical keyboards or mouses.

Going into the wild to replace broken stuff is disheartening nowadays.

That alienware 13 intel proc is essentially crap IMO. That graphics amplifier is an amazing idea/product from Alienware, but charging $300 for one, then having to buy a $300-500 card after the fact is ridiculous. That amplifier should be no more than $150-$175 before tax.

The amplifier is just made of cheap bulky plastic and come with messy cabling and a tiny fan and psu. At most a 100$ part

How they managed to fit that graphic card in there is kinda cool.
Would cost a fuck ton though. And I just brought a gaming laptop this year, and it was not cheap.

Would the CPU even be able to push games enough to need a 980? I thought processors for laptops were another big hurdle for gaming.

Sort of interested. I work from home three days a week and in the office two days and my laptop is bugging out a bit. It's basically used as a portable desktop with docks at both locations but a replacement that would also run games would be ideal.

Obviously it is important that it doesn't have red lights all over it and pictures of aliens and whatnot.
