Nvidia's putting full-fat desktop GTX 980s into notebooks

My vanilla Broadwell-U laptop already gets real hot trying to open a UI editor.

How did they accomplish this in thermals!?

Also... rip Fury Nano

Eh, if they have an integrated chip on the side that takes over when on battery, it could have reasonable battery life.

Yeah, that's what most gaming laptops do these days- your games run on the Nvidia/AMD GPU, your browser runs on the same Intel IGP that every other laptop in the world runs on.

this is what the asus laptop looks like without the water cooler

that's another model, this is the water cooled one.

Just a slight difference

Great news! This will make mobile VR so much easier! Bring your laptop and Rift along with you in your backpack to grandma's house, your friend's place, parties, events at school, etc.

Anything that makes VR a little more accessible and extends its influence in the mainstream is a good thing.

All for the low low price of 19.99... oh wait no... that's $1,999 (and up)

165W desktop GPU in a laptop chassis?

No fucks given. Let's do it guys.

I love how ugly these things look, they really are going for the 'Hummer of Laptops' styling there

I find they look OK, especially the Asus one which looks like some stealth sports car. Not sure what people expecting? The same apple mbp look? They do make/copycat that design, but are for their slim laptops which don't need big fans to cool 150w parts.

I can only imagine a laptop with a full top-end GPU and a CPU powerful enough to match up to it would sound like a jet plane with the amount of cooling required in such a small space.

Fine, but at least give us something more subdued that doesn't have bright pieces of plastic with bold primary colors that are designed to look so "in your face".

Grey, white, and charcoal is more in style these days. There's no reason for the bold primary colors to be featured.

And I bet it will be paired with some cheap as fuck non IPS low angle view badly calibrated washed blacks 1080p screen.

Ugh, laptop screens are the bane of my existence, thats why I've only considered buying a MBPr/SP3

My sub-$1000 gaming laptop (Lenovo Y50-70) has an IPS screen, for what that's worth.

You can pay $49 to get it calibrated, do it yourself if you have the tools, or trudge forums like notebookreview.com to see if somebody posted a color profile. I have a color profile I got there back in 2012 or so for my Sager NP81703D.

Xotic is one of the best places to get a laptop like this, they have a HUGE selection of brands as well. They have quite a few more features than the rest of the laptop sites, but they also charge a little extra.

$3,099? HOW MUCH!? I mean, I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, but...ouch. I'd hate to think the cost of the one with two 980's.

Yeah, sucks. I'd maybe wait for a Sager/Clevo model to pop up. Reasonable, understated design; more customization (cpu, gpu, more screen types/resolutions), great (if loud) cooling. They normally come without all the extra price hiking bullshit specifications you don't need, nor the bloatware that everybody else likes to install.

I would hope that it would mean those models will be at least a grand cheaper. Then again, going back to my previous post about the two 980's, a second GPU is tempting...

Okay, it's been almost two months since they announced 980 laptops were a thing. Has there been any more talk about how much the other ones are gonna cost (Google seems to turn up a whole lot of nothing)? XOTIC's $3,000 one is a fair bit much, and I'm hoping to see how much Celvo's one is going up for.
