''Kojima has called his upcoming game Project Ogre. In the interview, he described it as being set in a very open world where players can wander around and explore freely. Players should still be able to find new sights and worthwhile adventures after having played the game for as many as 100 hours, he said.''

...is there a single area worth exploring in The Phantom Pain?

I found a mug on top of a building once.

Many players have racked up over 100 hours so I'd think so but only in relation to side ops. It's certainly no GTA. There's a whole lot of nothing out there.

This map should be entitled "Metal Gear Solid V and its wasted potential. Graphical description."

Maybe if they added Sniper Wolf on an attached map of Afghanistan.

Solidus isn't really discussed in TPP, right?

wonder how old he is during the Venom Snake event

12 at the oldest. But since the details of his accelerated aging aren't really set in stone, he could functionally be 18-20 or so.

Why does Zero call Big Boss Jack in the tapes?

Jack is his name? Or a name he is known by.

Because that's his real name?

short for John

I mentioned this before and I'll mention it again. In the truth tape about the LET project, Ocelot specifically says the words " now the first boys..." Implying there would be a follow up with regard to a different entity. Only thing is, there is no follow up.

You know my roommate just mentioned that one reason konami may have been pulling outta triple a development is because gambling will soon become legal in Japan. Fuck a duck. Man's greed once again foils art and the message behind it.

Heh, 100 hours?. After 36-38 hours, I have played in every worth location 2-3 times.

He is not only not discussed, he is not mentioned a single time outside an Emblem reference.

We will never ever know what year he was born aside from speculation that its 1976 since that is when LET project was officially closed.

Why does Zero call Big Boss Jack in the tapes?

Jack is a nickname for John.

This is a good question. Rising claims he was in his teens when he was dispatched to Liberia and that he already knew he was a clone. Due to his accelerated aging, he likely looked older, but there's no way to know how old. He was born in 1972, Raiden in 1983. It's a good question.

If he looked just like Big Boss, it really adds to Big Boss's legend. According to legend, all across Africa this single soldier is doing work in Angola, South Africa, Liberia, Mozambique, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), all at the same time. A true Journeyman. Then Afghanistan and Iraq and the US and everywhere else the real Big Boss goes.

sheesh Solidus really got the shaft again? After being set on fire in MGS4 then he's completely forgotten in TPP.

So he goes from president in MGS1, well intentioned villain in MGS2, then to burning garbage corpse that eva knows is solidus but still throws herself on and dies with in whose body parts are then used along with liquid's to reassemble big boss solely so he could turn a valve and die in MGS4 and then not even mentioned in mgsv.

solidus had a hard life

well intentioned villain in MGS2

I wouldn't say that. The idea that humans should control their own destiny is no less arrogant than the AIs thinking they should control human destiny. There is no right answer. He was mostly obsessed with leaving a legacy behind. Likely one of the factors he was down for being president in the first place, aside from being groomed for it.

MGS4 at least turned him into a chicken and placed him alongside his brothers. :p

At this point I just assume that any interesting character in MGS1/2/3 that was ruined or ignored in subsequent games was written by Tomokazu Fukushima.

I knew his name was John, but I forget that Jack is a nickname for that. Nicknames are dumb.

I remember the Boss calling him that now though.

Does Kaz know from the beginning this isn't Big Boss ? I mean, he knew Venom took a shrapnel to the head?

He doesn't know. Ocelot reveals the truth to him after the ending.

Which is idiotic, considering that he KNEW the medic had a fucking horn on his head and Big Boss didn't.

Hey can anyone who has ranked their mother base up post information on the unit functions you can unlock? I just unlocked the ability to modify the weather at about support rank 32. I also recently noticed that my intel team now show me climbable cracks on the map and that was maybe around rank 27.

Just wondering if my intel or support teams can do much more? I know there is a achievement/ trophy for getting all mother base teams to 50.

it's one of those things that, much like his blindness, isn't certain.

The tape has ocelot and miller talking about venom snake and miller is incredibly upset at the notion of being abandoned by BB. It's not certain if the discussion is before or after TPP butttttttttttttt it would make a bit more sense that Miller is so pissy in TPP if he knows he's been cast aside by his former partner. It would also make less sense for that conversation to take place after TPP because that would assume that ocelot snapped out of the self hypnosis he put himself under soon after, what, Quiet's departure? Doesn't make much sense for that to happen after those events since that's not all the significant, right?

but i guess it could work either way. I suppose after Quiet's departure and VS returns to MB, Ocelot is all like yo i gotta go but before i do that guy aint BB and also you need to fake that he is BB for the rest of your life

I don't think Kaz knew of the whole thing during the course of the game. First of all, Kaz sounds pissed as fuck about the revelation. I highly doubt this man would follow the orders of a fake so willingly, or respect Venom's decision to let Huey go for example.

Peace Walker doesn't mess up anything.

At the end of MGS3, Snake was informed by EVA of The Boss' real mission. He already knows she didn't defect. What Snake doesn't get is WHY The Boss would throw away her life for "loyalty to her country". That's what Snake doesn't understand. He cannot think the same way, he would NOT DO the same thing. So to him, it makes no sense.

Then The Boss disappoints him even further by "throwing down her gun", by refusing to start a war. By choosing to die in peace instead surrounded by the fires of conflict. Big Boss realizes that The Boss has given up on a soldier's life, which is basically all she taught him. That's why he decides (Even starting from Portable Ops) to not to live his life the way The Boss did. He is not going to throw down his gun. He will fight. He will live and die in a battlefield. That's all he knows. The Boss "betrayed" him.

I never liked the idea behind making an AI based on The Boss. I've always believed that was unnecessary.

I just really don't like what PW decided to do with their relationship as it seems like a forced way of undoing what was portrayed in the previous game. MGS3 ended fantastically, with Snake/BB finding out the truth about the Boss and feeling broken and defeated because of it. That's what makes the final scene with the tearful salute so great. Having the next game in the series force The Boss back as some ridiculous AI, and then have that AI (which, remember, isn't actually The Boss) get Big Boss pissy enough that he disowns her is infuriating. It really cheapens the final scenes in MGS3.

For all the things MGSV does wrong with its story, I appreciate that it didn't drag The Boss (and her relationship with BB) through anymore mud. If anything, it kinda goes backwards on it since the description on the Bandana claims that it was "lovingly repaired". (though that loses some meaning when you consider Venom isn't actually Big Boss)

But what PW did about Big Boss and his idea of The Boss was just plain amazing.

...

I agree with this guy:

I hate every opinion you have, and I think they're all the definition of a wrong opinion if there ever was such a thing.

Of the opinion that Big Boss' name is Jack, he lies to Ocelot about his name which is why he has such a cheesy grin on his face when he says it.

I think the cheesy grin is actually because he knows Ocelot is being honest for the first time. He knows Ocelot is telling him his real name, "Adamska", so he is happy they are putting all the bullshit behind them. John is definitely Big Boss' real name.

You can also cry more, then.

i mean is he following Venom's orders? Almost all decisions are taken by Miller or Ocelot, Venom doesn't have much in the way of input except "dont kill Quiet." When can you develop weapons? When can you expand to FOB? Who decides that fucking zoo gets made?

I mean he sends Huey off to basically die at sea against Kaz's wishes. that's kinda the only thing he does and even then, it's not like he isn't trying to send Huey to his death. He's just doing it is own way

Everyone is tortured and all sorts of bullshit happens that he has zero say over. Venom gets to deploy troops and throw money at expanding MB and that's kinda it, really.

Since I don't recall him ever being called John after that, but he is still referred to as Jack, I have my doubts

Also, Adamska is a stupid name

Well, that one alongside "don't kill Huey" seem two pretty big decisions that only the real Big Boss should be taking. And Kaz just swallowing his pride and letting Venom have his way seems to indicate he thinks he's the real Big Boss.

I could be wrong though, the game is definitely vague on that subject.

Well, "Jack" is a nickname for "John".

And yeah, "Adamska" is just plain ridiculous.

Jack is a nickname for John, as others have mentioned. At first, I thought he could be lying about his name because of that grin, but MGSV seems to confirm that he's actually John.

What?

Big Boss has the final say on everything, Kaz just handles the logistics of managing Diamond Dogs.

It's highlighted several times. Kaz tells the DD soldiers to shoot quiet, but ultimately it's Big Boss' call. Same with Huey's exile. Even the torture is clearly sanctioned by Big Boss, as he oversees them when he can.

Nothing goes down with Big Boss' permission. He's clearly the leader.

This is how I took it at the time, since The Boss spent the whole game calling him Jack. In the decade since I've learned that Jack is short for John, which is dumb.
