Sadly, even the inclusion of Ryu & Ken wouldn't help the financial success of SF3. All versions were technically failures, but 3S sold the most cabs. It wasn't until 3rd Strike Dreamcast, SF 15th Anniv edition and 3S Online Edition were they eventually able to make a profit.

Even tho SF3 started in 97, it was the beginning of the 'Dark Age' of Capcom fighters, as the SF franchise would only remain popular in crossover titles like CVS1 & 2 as well as MVC2. There were so many SF games from 1994 to 1999 that it would make your head spin.

lol...I actually meant to say air grabs being a universal mechanic. The game seems very 50/50 for a lot of situations, I think it would be a nice addition.

Because it's mostly bullshit. Listed requirements are rarely useful or indicative of performance in reality. You're better off buying when the game is actually out.
 
I dunno why people are so concerned about Chun in SFV. You can't look at one tool that isn't terribly useful and say Chun will be bad because of it or anything. It's fine if some characters are less v-skill/v-trigger dependent than others.

Also, I can't believe people are arguing SFV Ryu parry is in the same league as 3S parries o_O

This is pretty crazy- the least known OG SFII character is still orders of magnitude more known/popular than any character introduced in SFIII.

The original context was wether or not people would like vega more in here if he was a 3 character rather than a 2 character.
 
Maybe I haven't paid enough attention to the discussion in this thread but I feel like the discussion over these last two characters gets really snarky and I don't understand.

Everyone's convinced that the last two characters are the ones they want to see. If you point out that they're not really set in stone, it's perceived as an insult. It's getting weird.

A bit but most of the arguing is causw by him, legit not anyone is saying alex is more popular than anyone. If he stopped being such an insuffarable condesending ass and actually paid attention to anyones arguments hed be more tolerable.

1) a dude insinuates this thread has specific preferences which are out of line with what the general audience probably wants to see
2) Solarpowered says that no matter what they do to Vega, he'll be behind "Ibuki, Makoto, Alex, Urien, Dudley, the Twins, Gill and Q in the popularity department" which I thought was a pretty crazy opinion (and kind of validated the first dude's point).

What context am I missing?

The fewer unknown slots remain, the more (certain) people's hopes dwindle for whatever character they want in (but given the DLC model for the game meaning tons of characters will be added post-release, I don't understand why people are treating the initial 16 as so important).

Did you even read the the post I quoted and my response? As a 3S character it's very likely he'd struggle to reach the top of the cast. Of course he'd be more memorable as a SFII character.

My claims are just bullshit I'm spewing like everything else in this thread after Karin's reveal. People in here are swearing up and down the Sim/Gief are on their way and that Vega is really on the same level as Ryu, Ken, Chun, Cammy, Akuma, Bison or Guile.

Again the context was if Vega/Claw were a third strike character hed have a tough time being cooler as the other characters. He didnt say im general he said third strike specifically. Not that any of these characters are more popular than Vega but that if say vega was introduced in 3S rather than 2 hed be at the bottom with necro and twelve.
Also the first 16 are so important to people cause they are te characters you wont have to wait for and you can play with them as soon as you boot up the game, you can play your favorite character without having to wait

DryEyeRelief was never saying anything about some theoretical scenario about how popular Vega would be if he debuted in 3S instead of SFII. He was just commenting on many people in this thread liking 3S characters far more than the average person and/or people in this thread bizarrely thinking 3S characters are more popular or recognizable than anyone in the original SFII cast.

The character polls don't mean (hardly) anything because:
1) They tend to be conducted on fighting game enthusiast sites so it's not a random sampling of the game's actual audience but rather a narrow niche. (the biggest reason)
2) People may avoid 'wasting' their votes on shoe-in characters. People aren't going to vote for characters they assume will be in the game anyway.

If I was thinking it was the characters I want to see then I'd be saying it's Linn Kurosawa and Leona from KOF.

I'm just going by what's been pretty much confirmed by Dahlgren's comment + guys like Valle giving strong hints. It all seems way too obvious of who it'll be and I'm sorry to say it won't be 3s characters

Here's the thing, Capcom has lied before about characters in their games, it's not a foreign thing. Okay sure, the whole Sentinel thing was a mistranslation, but they did lie about Hsien-Ko & they also straight-up lied about Decapre (who was guessed by many). And if I recall, didn't one of the UK guys hint at Ken not being in the game, only for us to get Ken at SDCC? All I'm saying is that we shouldn't count Siliconera out just yet, more so since they're 2/4 so far (that plus they leaked Alex & Urien first). Zangief & Dhalsim would just be a lame finish to a rather hype ride, even counting DLC. And neither would really offer much to the story. On the flip side, Alex could serve as the bridge between IV & III's story threads, & obviously Urien would be the Illuminati rep of the game (an organization that we know will play a major role in the game's story).

But seriously, would you want your last 2 base roster reveals to be golf clap-tier or standing ovation-tier? I guarantee you that if it's Zangief & Dhalsim, a majority of the reactions will be the former (barring hardcore Zangief & Dhalsim fans). That being said, I do understand your confidence. Hell, I'm just as confident, if not more so, about the NX being a platform rather than a singular system. The difference here is that we're talking about a company who's willing to blatantly lie about their fighting game rosters to keep their surprises a surprise, even in the face of leaks.

For the millionth time, well-known =/= popular/liked.

Also, these polls weren't just run on fighting game enthusiast web sites. The were run everywhere.

The Play Magazine poll, for example, was run...in a video game magazine.

They're obviously using the character polls as a measure of popularity in terms of who to put into the game though. Everyone in the game so far is high on the list except the person they admitted wasn't popular.

Ok so why is the number so low then. SF Facebook page alone has like 2 million likes. The number of participants in the poll was like 1/50th of that. Not counting duplicate votes and stuff.

SF 4 alone sold 3 million, do you really think the poll is a fair representation of the entire SF fanbase? and possible SF5 purchasers.

An Internet poll would lead you to believe Mario, Link and cloud are on the same level of popularity. In real life Mario is leagues ahead of both of them combined.

This.... The poll is meant to serve as a guideline. Ultimately it is up to the developer.

I am sure they are aware of the scale of the poll and the audience voting in it.

Vega is most definitely a "popular" character whether or not Bison or Gief have a few hundred votes above him is irrelevant. In the grand scheme of things.

I've known this for years as it was discussed on SRK forums and in a few sites, but all in all, the background character in Ken's SF2 stage is not Q and was just an NPC.
Even if Capcom retcon so that is Q it would go against his character bio and description.

Viper isn't iconic lol

Hell I wouldn't call any nonSF2 character besides maaaaaybe Yun - that's more notoriety than being iconic, really - as iconic, to be honest.
 
Lile its ok if more folks like 1 character over another. Juri Viper have different appeals. Viper has a sort of spy swag,giving her ease of play in 5 with a slight fashionable redesign (give her a long coat capcom) would help. Doesn't mean nobody likes her

On the flip, juri has a good design and easier to play. She is also a bundle of "appeals" (multiple anime fetishisms budled into one). She winds up more popular than viper, thats ok. Lets wait to see how the dlc situation works out before we start rulling folks about because of popularity reasons.

Maybe there needs to be a conversation on maybe folks shouldn't listen to japan everytime they claim a character isnt cute enough. But thats another thing
