At some point you have to drop the pumpkins or crash dummies and have tests with humans; but Huey could have gone to Skull Face and asked for his most disposable soldier instead of putting his kid in.

Well the wiki says the following:

Nine years later, Venom Snake encountered what appeared to be Paz in Mother Base. Miller and Ocelot would elaborate that Paz seemingly gained amnesia due to trauma. After collecting memento photos relating to Paz, Venom Snake encountered her once again, only to find that she was suddenly in a panic. Paz explained that there was still a bomb inside of her, then slowly pulled out the bomb from her stomach. The bomb then exploded and Venom Snake was seemingly caught in the blast only to find himself waking up unharmed, outside on Mother Base. A butterfly passed by him but it mysteriously vanished when he grabbed it and opened his hand. Having realized that Paz had truly passed away many years ago, Venom Snake finally came to terms with her death. It was heavily implied that what Venom Snake witnessed was a phantom of Paz, and that he had experienced an elaborate and vivid hallucination (Miller and Ocelot did not really appear either) due to his grief over losing Paz (as his direct failure, not noticing the second bomb while reaching inside of her); in which it was akin to the feeling of a phantom pain.

The parasites on Mother Base didn't evolve to change the language they target. The second outbreak was caused when Huey's beta ray goggles caused them to mutate so they could still reproduce despite the wolbachia's male-to-female conversion. Huey was "re-weaponizing" the parasites so they could be sold to clients like DARPA (and perhaps secure him a new work environment where he can make WMDs without worrying about being on trial).

Skull Face was dead when the Kikongo Strain mutated. He probably had no idea about the mutations.

...Or maybe the Strain mutated because Wolbachia was introduced into it? After all Wolbachia is one of the most reproductive parasites. In fact certain species NEED Wolbachia in order to reproduce and thus mutate.

Copulation. Male to Female. I'm not making this up, I swear to god there's a wiki page on wolbachia.

I definitely think they're intended to deliver an ICBM somehow.

One ICBM weighs about 40 tons, is 60 feet long, and needs to be fired form a giant silo.

Walker Gears, besides acting as part of a scheme to get PMCs from around the globe to come under Cipher's thumb, were planned to be equipped with the English strain of the vocal cord parasites. Because of their near-unlimited potential for traversing terrain and crossing long distances, they would have been able to quickly and efficiently spread the parasites all throughout the world. Not only that, but PMCs unaware of the parasites would play a hand in spreading them during their travels and involvement in wars.

Certain Walker Gears were also intended to have depleted uranium armor plating, similarly to Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. By selling these to various factions around the world, along with the metallic archaea to quickly enrich the uranium from the Walker Gear's armor into weapons-grade uranium, the global community would have access to nuclear weaponry in a form other than nukes. This was intended as a back up plan, based on nuclear deterrence theory, in case his plan to rid the world of the English language using the vocal cord parasites failed.

Went back to GZ the other day, there are 6 people in the chopper before it crashes into the XOF one.

The medic, Miller, Snake, Chico, the pilot and some random mother base soldier.

The only one confirmed dead from all of them is Chico.

The tapes explicitly explain that Huey was in charge of ordering x-ray scanners to check for infections but he ordered scanners that also give off beta rays. He was trying to mutate the parasites so that the wolbachia's infertility trick no longer inhibited them from working. They also note Huey was talking on back channels to groups in America including DARPA. These groups were interested in buying the weaponized parasites. In other words, Huey was trying to make the parasites work again. The strain didn't mutate in the language it targeted; it was still a Kikongo strain; it just mutated so that it could reproduce asexually, regardless of the wolbachia.
 
I'm also kind of surprised that there are people who felt that Big Boss making it from MG1 to MG2 was some big plot hole that needed closing, and feel satisfied by how this game managed it. Did they forget that this game has two even more improbable revivals? Big Boss's complete recovery from a 9 year coma after being in the middle of a flaming helicopter crash is one thing you can explain away with Segal-esque action movie apathy to medical science, but Volgin surviving being set on fire with a bolt of lightning that set off the belt of live ammunition strapped across his chest (after two different significant shootouts with Naked Snake) is the most absurd thing ever.

Is Volgin's return somehow less implausible than Big Boss's return in Metal Gear 2?

Ah, that does make more sense. So still using the Walker Gears, but they essentially become the nukes themselves. I hadn't considered the Walker Gears -are- the nukes, but in hindsight that makes sense in light of the whole focus on depleted uranium armor in Sahelanthropus.

No wonder Kaz is so furious during the stinger at the end of V. After spending an intimate moment with BB in a cardboard box, BB decides to not tell him he is leaving to make an outer heaven and instead sends a body double to save Kaz.

BB was a monster who played with Kaz's emotions.

Also, on using the beta rays to make the parasites be able to reproduce again, Wolbachia already lets them asexually procreate-

Now no one will be able to walk over anyone else. The languages/cultures that remain "after English" will fall into a certain balance where they "respect their neighbors," as Skull Face says in the speech.

They talk about him in the tapes, he was basically in a coma. The only reason he was being kept 'alive' was because of his special abilities so they could study his body.

Seems the only thing he had left on his mind was revenge which ended up being channeled through Mantis, who was being studied at the same facility as Volgin. Volgin basically can't function without Mantis.

This. Out of all characters in metal gear, volgin was probably the most fucked
besides raikov
up at the end of his 'arc'. I just imagine him being brain dead but just so freaking pissed off at his almost perfect plan going to shit in like a day.

I seem to remember the initial Kikongo outbreak starting to target my non-Kikongo speaking soldiers because I wasn't Johnny on the spot with quarantining them. Was that a gameplay mechanic or a lore thing because it seemed to spread regardless past a point.

Unless I misunderstood, it seemed to just be Kikongo speakers but the symptoms developed at different rates for each person. Thus, if you didn't get to Code Talker quickly, more and more Kikongo-speaking people (in quarantine or otherwise) would start to succumb to the parasites.

Your soldiers, over time, learn each others languages. It's a trojan since the beginning of the game. It's also to make it harder to track the progenitor parasite-if all your soldiers are learning each others languages, then it becomes harder pin pointing it once the quarantine starts.

It's pretty neat.
