Due to budget cuts, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said that 31 satellite DMV offices would no longer have access to driver’s licenses examiners, meaning that residents will need to travel to other counties to apply for licenses. The move comes just one year after the state’s voter photo ID law went into effect.

AL.com’s John Archibald asserted in a column on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Justice should open an investigation into the closings.

“Because Alabama just took a giant step backward,” he wrote. “Take a look at the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters. That’s Macon, Greene, Sumter, Lowndes, Bullock, Perry, Wilcox, Dallas, Hale, and Montgomery, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office. Alabama, thanks to its budgetary insanity and inanity, just opted to close driver license bureaus in eight of them.”

“Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one,” Archibald explained. “But maybe it’s not racial at all, right? Maybe it’s just political. And let’s face it, it may not be either… But no matter the intent, the consequence is the same.”

So, tell me again how these voter ID laws aren't racist.

Wow. the shenanigans are palpable. I hope this goes to court.

My issue with voter id laws is that they're obviously made to decrease turnout.

Other countries have voter id laws, Canada for example, but i'm sure it's not a pain to get an ID.

This is so clearly racist it's sickening

Now they just need to say that they are stopping the issuing of driver license in those counties to decrease carbon omissions and to support local transportation infrastructure.

I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if SCOTUS somehow justifies this, 5-4.

"Everyone within the county is treated equally, therefore, voilà, equal protection!"

But please, folks - continue telling us all about how there isn't a gnatshit's worth of difference between the parties. Proceed..

I was thinking about posting this yesterday as well. I confirmed that Alabama was shutting down service to those counties due to budget cuts. Didn't have the time to confirm the population statistics

Are we to assume, then, that there's a strong likelihood that this will cause a significant decrease in black voters because there will be a portion of the affected population who will just let their IDs expire considering the hassle?

Come one guys let's not make it about race. I mean its just probably a total confidence that one of the most racist states in the country is doing something like this in its mostly bl-I can't do it I just can't.

Holy shit white racists and their tricks refuse to fucking die off.

I read the title and thought, surely, the OP is just using a clickbait headline.

Another domino in the "herp derp as long as you don't use racial language these policies aren't racist" line of thinking falls.

Repeal voting rights act for Southern states -> implement voter ID laws -> campaign against absentee ballots, early voting, and extending voting hours -> close DMVs in undesirable areas.

I'm sure the next step will be to bring back poll taxes and citizenship tests and having to be vouched for by an already eligible voter.

Or who will come of age now? Lots of people turn 16 every year. Hell, if you're 17 and in one of those counties now you have to start planning how you're going to make the trip to get your ID for next years elections

Nearly the whole of my extended family lives in and around Montgomery County.
The wiles of Alabama's GOP are well known and well documented.
This shit better get investigated at a Federal level.

This is poll taxes, basically. Why actually bring those back when you've got this wicked sweet workaround that does the same thing and gets dumbasses to believe it's all totally not racist.

Uh, those are some highly populated counties that are being shut down. Can't see how this is a positive for the state.

That's the problem. White Republicans want to suppress the Black vote any way the can, because they feel threatened.

Hmm
“Since the Jan. 1, 2015 implementation date of ALEA, my staff and I have worked hard to make improvements and optimize customer convenience to the citizens of Alabama. In July, I announced several advancements that will help the Driver License issuance process including online scheduling, online driver license renewals and duplicates, self-serve kiosks, digital licensing for smart phones, and statewide equipment upgrades. Since making that announcement, we have had over 40,000 transactions online,” said Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier. “The impact of the changes due to the budget cuts will be lessened because of the implementation of these technology-based services, including online renewals.”
I wonder just what a heatmap of those online transactions would look like

Ah, the Republican Party. Why bother winning people over when you can just silence them instead?

Jesus, what year is it in Alabama? The US South, of which I am unfortunately from, is the pit of Western civilization.
