can't wait to see the facebook posts.

shooter kills 15 in GUN FREE ZONE. Liberal logic amirite?

serious guys, its time we have the conventioneer about guns in the country, however I realize its not going to happen. A shooter killed a school filled with kids and we brushed it off.

Let'em rant and rave, they won't change a thing. Campuses will still, thankfully, remain gun-free.

Unfortunately, neither will we in the short-term.

CNN just fucking said this was "a gun free zone."

Clearly is isn't.

Nice, so future gun-nut/fox news arguments will be like... "well if every student on campus was armed with semi-automatic weapons, they could just have killed the gunman immediately after he/she started shooting."

"I can't believe the news today.

I can't close my eyes and make it go away.

How long? How long must we sing this song?"

More than 30 years old and these lines still pop into my head every time I see a story like this. How long?

Sickening.

I've said this quite a few times already, but this really seems to happen every other week in the US. It's incredibly sad to, but I'm really not surprised anymore when I see yet another new thread on GAF about a new shooting.

Pretty much this. I'm all in favor of curbing gun violence but I don't really understand how banning guns would be any more effective than Prohibition or the "War on Drugs". Both of which were a disaster.

Instead of taking every gun away there are ways to stop things like this from happening. Maybe you can only legally own one gun, and maybe that gun can only hold a small amount of bullets.

You're right, so long as there are guns there will be people shooting at others, but maybe the size of the incidents can be reduced. There is absolutely no reason anyone needs an assault rifle for "personal use."

What is there to compromise over? We're talking about life and death here, not budget alocations for different programs.

The fact is that our current laws are killing people. And we need to change that.

After the PBS documentary on gun control, I'm convinced you are looking at baby steps at best in this country.

As for the debate in particular threads like this, you are largely preaching to the choir in a thread where information is constantly being updated and discussed. I think that is the issue.

Is there any scenario where USA will change it stance to gun? Will the gun culture ever change?

I mean if Sandy Hook couldn't change I am not sure what will really.

Demographics, lots of the recent "no compromise" responses is driven by fear of a changing America and a loss of control.

So MAYBE we can start changing in a quarter of a century!

That's a pretty small school in Roseburg, OR about 3 1/2hrs south of Portland.

I'm hearing 10 to 15 dead.

the fact that mass shootings have become this common and it's not even surprising anymore is just...fucked.

those poor people.

And nobody decided to report it in? For fucks sake...

To be fair there's really nothing the police could do, and besides which police department would you report it to? He just says the northwest are you really gonna contact every police department from SF to Seattle to tell them that some guy on 4chan made a threat?

Three things are guaranteed in America.

- Death
- Taxes
- School shootings

That's almost how fucking common it is for this to be a consistent happening in our culture.

I don't know much about guns, but is there technology being developed so that each gun can be associated with it's owner?

some kind of finger print safety switch, or anything like it?

A lot of laws allow for a certain amount of risk. It's always tragic, but you're not going to get anywhere with an argument like that. What I want to see is proposed laws that would actually have an impact while acknowledging people's existing rights. Crap like "ban teh assault weapons!" is purely political. What about our mental health system? What about the ease of access to guns? That's what we need to be talking about, not some pipe dream about stripping 150,000,000 people of their legally owned property.

That tech exists but it's pretty expensive as far as I know. Hopefully it becomes common going forward.

The mental health systems in other Western countries aren't better. It's just a lot harder for violent people to get a hold of guns.

fixed. Its impossible to know who is going to use guns for bad. The right thing to do is to err in over restricting than under restricting because who get's harmed by not having a gun?

This makes me so fucking livid. We continue to do nothing about gun laws and people keep dying for it. Fuck this shit.

Is the count at 15 now?

Ban your fucking guns America. This is insanity.

People want to hold on to their guns so that they can stand up to the government.

But maybe a government that lets this happen is what we really need to stand up to.

It is insane. Things are starting to feel like they are reaching a boiling point in this country. I have no idea why the number of mass shootings is so high in the last handful of years, but its scary.

That said, I want to be able to own a gun for a few important reasons:

- When shit gets bad and we have riots because there is not enough food or water, I want a way to protect my family. When you have pissed off looters at the door, a baseball bat isn't going to be enough. Prowlers in the night don't concern me as much as a state of emergency where the general public is rattled and partially out of control. Things like the drought in California this year have me a little scared to be honest. Imagine if that's just the tip of the iceberg, how bad can things get?

- The government may need to be challenged one day. I don't see me owning a handgun being the thing that turns the tide and "wins us our freedoms back!" but I don't want to be helpless if things ever take an ugly turn. I realize I'm vastly underpowered but I don't want to be completely helpless.

- I want to be able to hunt for food someday. I think its a valuable life skill and its something I would like to be able to get some experience with. So far I don't, but I'm looking to change that.

Shootings are awful, awful business. I don't know what to do other than tighten up security in public places somehow or at least pass some laws to make the acquisition of a gun a more carefully examined process, but I sure as hell don't want them banned altogether. I believe that genie is out of the bottle and there's no way to collect all the guns out there.

Explain to me, what do you want to be done ? Do you think if guns get taken away killings would stop ? Criminals and other insane people will still find ways to get their hands on them. Us "Good" gun owners/enthusiast are the majority.

Thank you. There are so many decent people out there who own guns and that is never talked about. Gun owners just get stereotyped as loud-mouthed republican a-holes who drive trucks and have a beef with homosexuals. Its like saying all videogamers are overweight, cheeto-scarfing, mtn dew chugging, zit-faced introverts. If that image can change, I think the image of a gun owner should as well.
