President Obama Is Pissed (Oregon Shooting Press Conference)

You can tell he is frustrated and tired. Unfortunately, there will be people that will claim that the "guberment" is out for their guns, yet again.

After we weren't able to get any meaningful traction after Newtown, I've basically given up hope.

These people were able to hand-wave away the death of 20 children. Nothing will change their minds.

What is there to say about this that hasn't been done before? How can you have a dialogue with someone who doesn't want to listen?

This is just frustrating.

I was watching this on mute with no closed captioning (was at a bar). What was the reason for him smirking during this??

Can someone explain this to a non American?

You need citizens to vote at a state of federal level that you want tougher gun control?

Or do the citizens not even have that power?

Ultimately gun lobbyists override everything right now, even if the majority of the population wasn't apathetic about gun reform.

People don't give a fuck as long as it doesn't affect them. They just don't have any sort of empathy.

Why do they even bother pretending to care?

Honestly, at this point? I don't care anymore. Every other day there's another mass shooting headline. I brush over them without even paying attention anymore - it's like "car accident" or "local suicide" or any other daily tragedy. How can you not get numb to it? You'd go mad from anguish.

I buy the argument that we're past the point of no return on gun laws - we've seen the worst, shrugged our shoulders, and carried on. It's a fact of life now, blends into the tapestry of the nightly news with the fires and floods and celebrity mishaps.

The majority of Americans actually do want stricter gun control laws (as was shown back during the Sandy Hook shooting), but we need Congress to cooperate.

We, as citizens, need to vote in people that would vote yes on gun control. However, as of the mid-term elections last year, that will not be possible.

Citizens have to vote for representatives at the state or federal level who can then vote for tougher gun laws.

Last election the American public voted nationwide for people who do not support tougher gun control measures. So there's nothing that can be done.

No, they can't directly vote for gun laws, they would need to elect people to congress who would change the laws. Congress is currently full of crazy, greedy monsters at the moment nothing changes. And even voting them in is tough until the redistricting goes into effect.

Didn't want to put it in the OP, but I also found this.

Totally insane gun nut responds to speech. Like "I don't even know if this thing took place" crazy. This is what we're up against.

I can't believe that guy is actually real.

The thing is, according to polling at least, the majority of the country is right there with Obama. It's just the completely insane, vocal, and incredibly rich, minority that's holding us back.

A total ban would require an amendment to the Constitution. To get an amendment, you need 2/3rds of both Houses of Congress to agree. That's almost impossible with the current makeup in Congress.

It could also be done by State Legislatures via Constitutional Conventions, but that would require 2/3rds as well. Not happening.

At this point we probably are. "Some college kids? Who cares. Black people in a church? Whatever. Moviegoers? Should have bought the blurays when they come out."

He's not asking about a straight ban though, just tougher gun control. We don't need an amendment to the constitution to have tougher gun laws.

Japan has very strict gun control, yet a man was arrested there last year for having five 3D-printed guns. Two were lethal, but he didn't have bullets.
Here's a piece by Wired on a 3D-printed AR-15 they made.

Give it 10 years and people will be printing automatic rifles. No laws will be able to prevent blueprints from being shared over the internet. It's time to think about long-term solutions, background checks or whatever won't do shit to prevent any of this.

Honestly lobbying needs to be banned or some how reduced massively if we're to fixing anything in the country.

Lobbying as a concept is not a bad idea, the problem is how it's been warped by corporations just like everything else government related.

Pretty much that for any meaningful gun laws to stick, you need 2/3 of the voters to support it because of Supreme Court cases supporting the 2nd Amendment.

It's really really hard to convince 2/3 of any voting body to do anything.

Sad to see so many fellow leftists being in favor of government control.

I don't mean to sound accusatory, but could you explain what you mean by this? The government control being mentioned here would be to stop easy access to guns, which seems to be a good preventative measure.

So what is he going to do about it?
Turn on your listening ears! He just said. Congress. Governments. Obama isn'ts the king as the US is still ran by comittee! Come on, dude. Don't get negativity amped up without listening and comprehending the whole argument first.

The whole conference really demonstrate how stupid the uploader who wrote the description is for obama called him or her out before the comference ended! Fuck. Obama has every rights to come back and say, "See! Look at this shit. So fucking predictable. Like clockwork."

At this point we probably are. "Some college kids? Who cares. Black people in a church? Whatever. Moviegoers? Should have bought the blurays when they come out."

Perhaps, but there's two choices:

1) Do nothing. The situation stays the same or worsens.

2) Do something.

for those wondering what Obama was talking about when he said other countries responded to mass shootings

1996 shooting at Dunblane. 16 children and 1 teacher killed. The UK banned handguns after that.

it works.

I thought it would take kids to die for America to change but then Newton happened, now Americans should just give up, it will never happen in their lifetime.

What is there to be done at this point that hasn't been done before? We'll talk about this for a couple of weeks and promptly forget until the next mass shooting next month.

This is like one of those endless circular flowcharts.

When kids were allowed to be killed without anything happening it said everything you need to know about the debate.

Right wing radio is going to be on fire tonight and tomorrow.

I especially look forward to asshats like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh completely glossing over the actual tragedy and spend their entire time talking about how Obama wants to take everyone's gun away.

Im in favor of reducing preventable deaths. Do you get mad at government for mandating seatbelt and safety standards in cars. Or monitoring and controlling what companies can sell to consumers as food? How about environmental protections so that people don't dump chemicals into the river that some people go fishing in?

What is so crazy about adding tougher restriction to a tool thats primary function is to kill?

Money in politics is specifically why nothing can ever get done.

Well that and liberals and young people not voting.
