What would realistically happen if the US banned all firearms outright, say tomorrow?
Honestly? A small scale civil war. I bet states would try to secede over this. And "take it when you pry it from my cold dead hands" folks would become mobilized.

Most Americans support moderate gun control (see: that evidence I supplied and you were so keen to gloss over). Congress does nothing about it (see: real life). NRA/gun lobby is an influential body that actually exists (see: also real life). Either said lobbyists flaunt their $$$ to prevent Congress (and by association, the ATF) from acting or, for some incredible reason, Congress just doesn't feel like doing anything in spite of their constituents and just came to that path of inaction completely free of outside influences. But that's the rational explanation isn't it?
Gun lobbyists are bad enough, but when people like you actively pretend like they're not influencing how Congress fails to pass gun control legislation in spite of majority bipartisan support from the public, or how the ATF is hamstrung by the gun lobby and thereby unable to enforce existing laws... well, maybe it's not actually worse, but it can sure feel like it.
Japan has very strict gun control, yet a man was arrested there last year for having five 3D-printed guns. Two were lethal, but he didn't have bullets.
Here's a piece by Wired on a 3D-printed AR-15 they made.
Give it 10 years and people will be printing automatic rifles. No laws will be able to prevent blueprints from being shared over the internet. It's time to think about long-term solutions, background checks or whatever won't do shit to prevent any of this.
I live on a ranch in a very remote area of Montana. At the moment we have a pack of wolves who have set up just over the back ridge. At this time of year they're generally not a problem but when winter sets in and the food supply runs low they start coming down looking for a meal. Last year we had to get a pack relocated during their breeding season after they set up a den and began attacking the horses. That cost me several thousand and my daughter was left devastated after her horse was killed during one attack. Apart from the wolves we also get bears and coyotes coming down from time to time. Now I'll be more than happy to give up my shotgun and hunting rifles, if the people who want a total ban on all guns are willing to go out there and protect my property from these predators.
I don't understand American politics. If the majority has chosen Obama to lead the country, and Obama wants stricter gun laws, why can't he make those laws?

Nobody is going to take your guns. Ever. It's never going to happen. You're fine.
Most of us don't live in secluded ranches worrying about wolves. We're afraid that our kids are going to be a victim of gun violence. It's happening all the time, across the country. Have some perspective.

Without a doubt. We are fucked. If they tried to take all firearms open guerrilla warfare would happen
It only seems like we elect kings every 4 years. The President has a tremendous amount of power, but it's because the law gives him that power. He doesn't have power to change the law.I don't understand American politics. If the majority has chosen Obama to lead the country, and Obama wants stricter gun laws, why can't he make those laws?

One of the best if not the best Presidents this country has and probably will ever have in our country's current condition.

But 3D printers aren't weapons. Bans don't apply to them, and those with the wrong intentions only have to build them when they decide it's time to use them. For nations that implement bans, they'll find ways to arrest them. Five eyes network and all.
Why don't you try reading the thread before posting. It might give you some perspective
How many times in his tenure has Obama had to address the US about gun violence? This must be the fourth or fifth time, right? How awful. R.I.P to those lost. :-(
If this change ever happens, it'll have to be a generational shift in opinion on guns, unfortunately.

What I saw a few hours ago is that local news was saying 10 dead, 6 in critical condition.NBC has lowered the death count from 13 to 10.
I didn't ask for the likelihood of the theory, I asked if there was evidence to prove it.
In this case, the guy probably had the gun(s) at his place for weeks or months. Its a mental disorder, which is a whole other topic the government needs to fix.I meant file tracking. The five eyes network at that point in time may be strong enough to achieve such a feat.
As a further sidenote, something that tends to help with the crazies is giving them some time to cooldown, which includes making things take longer. Even having to go through all the work of getting a 3d printer, loading materials, etc, etc, just to print a gun will presumably be at least a bit harder than just straight up buying one in a store for some time.
I don't have a problem with mentally stable and responsible individuals owning and using guns on their private property or on premises established specifically for gun use -- shooting ranges, hunting clubs, etc. Your use of guns is fine by me, at least.
I have a problem with guns everywhere else. No need for them in the glove box, church, school, theaters, grocery stores, or just walking down a street.
Oh really. So who is going to come and protect my property from the wildlife that roams around the area? You?

This would have zero effect on themIf I were Obama entering my last year of Presidency, I would hold a primetime speech and just talk straight to NRA and ask them "how many more lives? how much more blood? How many more children? Make no mistake, you have blood of thousands on your hands." I'd talk for 45 minutes straight and make those shitbags cry to sleep.
They have beds of money to sleep on that will absorb their nonexistent tears. If I were Obama entering my last year of Presidency, I would hold a primetime speech and just talk straight to NRA and ask them "how many more lives? how much more blood? Someone post that Daily Show Aussie gun control video. If they banned guns right now what would we do with the millions? Of guns attained legally that are already out there? i mean at this point you can't ban guns. They are already out here... if you ban the sale of new ones they'll just buy one from the guy down the street with 400. Not to mention every time Obama talks about banning guns stock gets sold out at gun shops. I know I'd buy a couple more.
Democratic process, like most developed nations. Not as easy.

Now, you want to make them emotional just put some legislation in motion. Then they'll come out of the woodwork.
They have beds of money to sleep on that will absorb their nonexistent tears.
It would only further entrench the crowd the NRA panders to. Believe it or not, not all gun owners support the NRA. Quite a few find them despicable. But the same people saying he's a muslim are the ones that will say "he's coming for our guns!" if he makes such a speech. They absolutely loathe him in a way that is almost unprecedented.
The president would be better served going for the super common sense stuff that is hard to justify not having, like universal background checks and whatnot. Just rail on that.
Fuck it! Face it, if we can't get a legislation passed after 20 kindergarteners are massacred, then we're not gonna get it passed if some loon steps in a NICU and shoots two dozen babies. At least with my speech I want to plant a worm that slowly eats their conscious. Before they croak, they will beseech God and cry for forgivenessSadly, he still must consider the image of his fellow party members who, if not elected, will be replaced by more crazed individuals.
Didn't want to put it in the OP, but I also found this.
Totally insane gun nut responds to speech. Like "I don't even know if this thing took place" crazy. This is what we're up against.

First I want to know one thing:
What gives you the right more then the animals to live there? Are you better then them? You're in nature, you live by the standards set out by mother earth. You don't want this problem, move to the city. If you want to stay out there, you deal with the hand nature throws at you.
America's way is to neutralize (exterminate) the problem for the benefit of the few.
Just the same way how you deal with gun laws.
Makes me sick.
I'm glad he's politicizing it.
Because that's the ONLY way it'll ever be debated.
It's NOT WRONG to discuss a terrible tragedy that was ENABLED by the constitution.
It's never "too soon" or "inappropriate".
Just like the Liberals to concoct a Mass Shooting to take the heat off of Planned Parenthood.
